Placing the relationship in historical context, Morales and Prevost provide a most useful and necessary overview of the origins and development of the relationship, which helps the reader understand the complexities, subtleties, and realities that have characterized U.S.-Cuba relations from Thomas Jefferson to George W. Bush. This highly readable, concise, and perceptive work of this most complex relationship is also timely, as the Cuban Revolution turns fifty, facing a sea of challenges, doubts, and uncertainties. Morales and Prevost must be commended for producing what is likely to become a standard for the study of U.S.-Cuba relations. (Felix Masud-Piloto, DePaul University)

Most Americans view Cuba as being almost providentially assigned to the US orbit, and thus view relations between the two nations since the onset of the Cuban Revolution as an aberration instead of a culmination. Disappointed that Castro?s illness and semi-retirement did not result in serious discontent and perhaps even in regime overthrow, the neo-cons, according to the authors, are hoping his death will at last give them that prize. More likely, it will be their ultimate disappointment. (Wayne S. About the Author
Born in Cairo, Egypt, 2 August 1925, Alan Whicker attended Haberdashers' Aske's School, London, before serving as captain in Devonshire Regiment during World War II and then a director with the Army Film and Photo Section with British 8th Army and U.S. 5th Army. His long and extremely distinguished career includes positions as a newspaper war correspondent in Korea, foreign correspondent, novelist, writer, radio broadcaster and host of over 30 episodes of Whicker's World between 1959 and 1993. He has worked for the BBC and ITV, has been broadcast by Channel 4 and has been a producer and host for numerous television specials and documentaries. He is at present the face of the travel company Travelocity.

About the Author
Darren Broom is currently a Product Manager for Hiden Isochema Ltd, a manufacturer of analytical gas and vapour sorption instrumentation. His principal responsibility is the HTP series of volumetric and thermal desorption hydrogen storage material analysers. He holds a PhD from the University of Salford's Institute for Materials Research and, on completing his doctorate, went on to work for the European Commission's Institute for Energy where he assisted in the development of their hydrogen storage material testing facility.

Rejoice in a new edition!

A revised and enlarged edition of this classic (1995) has just been published. Carla is always at the cutting-edge. Her insights have been confirmed by advances in neuro-sciences and all of the first edition are still valid. But it is good to have some additional new input from the past 10 years. I'll first select a few quotes as appetizer.
Candace Pert, from Georgetown University, in her Introduction, admits that Carla "has also highlighted new research and insights which go beyond my 1999 book Molecules of Emotion... Learning is naturally a pleasurable experience and Carla Hannaford shows us how to return to that state as she explores the research, and ways and means of achieving the optimal learning environment."
Carla in concluding her Preface: "It has been a wonderful experience to bring forward so much new research, which strongly supports our need as human beings to connect, love, laugh, play and share music with each other to make each moment the best learning experience possible. I invite and challenge you to partake of the new findings of science, and to explore simple ways to optimize our experience and that of our children, to live more complete, passionate, creative, satisfying lives."
An important up-date is the heart-brain connection, more elaborated in her excellent book: Awakening the Child Heart: Handbook for Global Parenting. Other short, but significant up-date reports are interspersed throughout the book.
There are more expansions in Chapters 11: The Vestibular System, and 12: Fight and Flight--The Stress Effect on Learning.
Additional paragraphs on oxytocin and dopamine in relation to learning have been included. Those who don't mind being distracted by more neuro-chemistry, may find Why We Love and The Edge Effect also interesting.
There are some changes and additional diagrams and photos. I'm glad that Carla's own artistic sketchings are all kept.
This book is a "must" for every parent and educator.

A Practical and Courageous Book

This book talks about the causes of the problem (difficulty learning, difficulty connecting to others, and difficulty feeling comfortable in ones own skin) quite courageously, since it seems somewhat taboo these days to question our frantic pace and de-humanizing style of life. More to the point, she provides a great many excellent measures to rectify the problem. These measures are not instant solutions in the sense that trying them once is transformative, but some effect should be seen in the beginning and the effect builds with continued practice. Though the exercises may seem bizarrely unrelated to the objective, it is because they work largely by bringing the vestibular (balance) and autonomic nervous system back into balance. We are so alienated from these systems that we don't recognize the maneuvers that 'wake them up'.

Great Resource

This book is easy to follow and is a great resource for those interested in improving functioning, particularly in children. The brain research included in the book is outstanding, maybe a little overwhelming for a lay person not used to reading this type of information, but made to be as user friendly as possible. One school I'm in has used some of the basic principles presented in the book with noticeable positive results in a very short time. This book is worth the money and time spent reading.

About the Author

Gerald O'Collins, SJ took his PhD at the University of Cambridge and taught at the Gregorian University (Rome) from 1973 to 2006, where he was also Dean of the Faculty of Theology (1985-91). He has written or co-written sixty published books (including Rethinking Fundamental Theology, Jesus Our Priest, and Salvation for All), authored hundreds of articles in professional and popular journals, and lectured at many universities and colleges in the UK, Ireland, USA, India, New Zealand, his native Australia, and elsewhere. As well as receiving numerous doctorates and other honorary awards, in 2006 he was created a Companion of the General Division of the Order of Australia (AC), the highest civil honour granted through the Australian government.

Tells us what the Second Vatican Council said about other religions, acknowledging them and dialoging with thm, A good treatment. However, there is an emphasis in the book concerning Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. What the Council said about other Christian religions, which I consider of greater importance, is largely ignored. I wonder why!

An excellent book for users willing to spend time to learn

This book links antenna theory with NEC and MATLAB simulations in a way I have not seen before. It does this in a very transparent way, largely avoiding complicated math, so you can really understand the underlying principles and applied math if you are willing to invest some time.

The key here is that the book read together with the included CD, with scores of small utility programs, MATLAB m-files (Functions) and NEC examples, very clearly shows the underlying physics and calculations so they can be understood. Admittedly you get this only when you really use the CD but it is well worth doing.

With the book you also get the free 4NEC2 program and a public domain graphic interface so you can try all the NEC examples. These examples are then the perfect starting point for your own antenna experiments.

MATLAB is very good but also expensive (unless you are a university student)so I think the readers should try to download GNU Octave as that is a public domain software largely compatible with MATLAB. This should allow the reader to try the MATLAB functions without cost.

This is not an easy to read introduction to antennas or a complete mathematical treatment of the subject but if you are looking for a book that can be used to improve your ability to design and optimize workable antennas I think it is excellent.

very practical information for small antenna analysis and design

I found this book an excellent resource both as a thorough review of the mathematical techniques and the use of NEC to analyze small antenna ideas and as a compendium of both typical and novel small antenna designs.

The book starts with an overview of the problem and a brisk review of E&M from Faraday onward. Mathematical techniques are reviewed for setting up integrals for the calculation of gain and radiation resistance. Vector calculus and basic related math are covered in an appendix if a refresher is required. Then a thorough discussion of how NEC2 and NEC4 work is next, including a comprehensive list of limitations to be aware of.

Once this background and the tools are in place, there is a thorough discussion of the small dipole in many forms, followed by a similar treatise for the small loop. Small dipoles are first analyzed as flared ends of a transmission line. Then techniques for lowering the large capacitive reactance are covered including top, volume and coil loading as well as the effect of radials over average ground. Small loops are discussed in many forms including thick, doughnut, barrel and solenoid formats, contrawound toroids and finally the folded spherical helix. In all cases the math and models are covered thoroughly but the results are tabulated and reviewed so even if one chooses to skim over the math one can still come away with valuable trends, maxims and conclusions for each variation. In most cases, the total practical system is included in the discussion including losses due to matching network and average grounds, not just the ideal antenna itself. Many complete examples are given, most are targeted towards two primary application domains: small hand-held devices in the UHF spectrum such as cell phones, and wire antennas for the HF amateur radio bands. Each chapter ends in a set of problems, making it functional a textbook also.

The book comes with a supplementary CD. It includes many NEC card decks, c++ programs that are used to generate complex wire lists for these decks, and several Matlab (Octave works fine also) programs for calculations such as plotting frequency responses and designing matching networks.

The book is written in the first person giving the feel of listening to a professor lecturing. Indeed, Dr Miron has been a professor of EE for some twenty years, and this text suggests he must have been a good one.

Note: I purchased the version for the Kindle so I could read it as I travel. I found the formatting was well done, and all figures in the book can be zoomed full screen so I had no difficulty reading everything. However at the time I purchased it Amazon did not include the accompanying CD with the Kindle purchase. I found that the publisher will email you the CD contents as a zip file for no extra charge by just sending an inquiry to usbkinfo@elsevier.com.

Gap filler engineering book.

This book will fill the gaps that others left out. It has just the right amount of math and theory to cover what I could not find in other books. This is a great companion book and can stand on its own.
