Reading 1759: Literary Culture in Mid-Eighteenth-Century Britain and France (Transits: Literature, Thought & Culture, 1650-1850)From Buc

Reading 1759 investigates the literary culture of a remarkable year in British and French history, writing, and ideas. Familiar to many as the British “year of victories” during the Seven Years’ War, 1759 was also an important year in the histories of fiction, philosophy, ethics, and aesthetics. Reading 1759 is the first book to examine together the range of works written and published during this crucial year. Offering broad coverage of the year’s work in writing, these essays examine key works by Johnson, Voltaire, Sterne, Adam Smith, Edward Young, Sarah Fielding, and Christopher Smart, along with such group projects as the Encyclopédie and the literary review journals of the mid-eighteenth century. Organized around a cluster of key topics, the volume reflects the concerns most important to writers themselves in 1759. This was a year of the new and the modern, as writers addressed current issues of empire and ethical conduct, forged new forms of creative expression, and grappled with the nature of originality itself. Texts written and published in 1759 confronted the history of Western colonialism, the problem of prostitution in a civilized society, and the limitations of linguistic expression. Philosophical issues were also important in 1759, not least the thorny question of causation; while, in France, state censorship challenged the Encyclopédie, the central Enlightenment project. Taking into its purview such texts and intellectual developments, Reading 1759 puts the literary culture of this singular, and singularly important, year on the scholarly map. In the process, the volume also provides a self-reflective contribution to the growing body of “annualized” studies that focus on the literary output of specific years.

Review
This volume offers fine essays devoted to the pivotal year 1759, a time when Britain emerged as a world power to be reckoned with and when the British literary scene exploded with a collateral force. Regan (Queen's Univ., Belfast) divides the collection into six sections, treating the literature of empire and war, sentimentality, authorship, the Enlightenment, the notion of authorial originality, and the "culture of reading." The volume treats major writers, including Samuel Johnson, Voltaire, Diderot, Adam Smith, Edward Young, Oliver Goldsmith, Christopher Smart, David Hume, Laurence Sterne, and Sarah Fielding. Reading 1759 offers a superb, cogent introduction to mid-18th-century literary culture, covering much important ground and opening up new prospects for future investigation. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty. (CHOICE)

Reading 1759 nevertheless provides interesting insights into a number of notable works and authors and makes a useful contribution to Bucknell University Press’s Transits: Literature, Thought & Culture 1650-1850 transnational eighteenth-century studies series. . . .scholars will find new perspectives on the texts and authors that distinguished 1759’s contributions to literary history. (The Eighteenth-Century Intelligencer)

Reading 1759 calls attention to an interesting and pivotal moment in British and French history and reading culture by bringing together eleven essays on different aspects of the literature of that year. As Shaun Regan explains in his introduction to the volume, the year 1759 is particularly suited for this kind of cross-disciplinary study because it was the midpoint of the Seven Years’ War and was marked by cultural events such as the public opening of the British Museum, as well as the publication of major literary works by Voltaire, Samuel Johnson, Laurence Sterne, David Hume, Adam Smith, and Edmund Burke (1–2). By encompassing the literature of both Britain and France, Reading 1759 invites a more transnational approach to literature that better approximates what readers at the time could have experienced. Regan explains that 'the purpose of the new essays collected together in Reading 1759 is to investigate the literary culture of Britain and France during this remarkable year' (2). Taken as a whole, the volume does this quite well. . . .Reading 1759 offers an overview of major authors and works from this year of literary, historical, and cultural change. (Eighteenth-Century Fiction)

Reading 1759 investigates the literary culture of a remarkable year in British and French history, writing, and ideas. Examining key works by Johnson, Voltaire, Sterne, Adam Smith, Edward Young, Sarah Fielding, and Christopher Smart, the volume presents a wide-ranging account of the year’s work in literature and of the key issues that preoccupied writers at this time: from empire, civilization, and social reform to Enlightenment knowledge, authorial originality, and literary taste.

Mother, Mother: A Novel, by Koren Zailckas

From Koren Zailckas, author of the iconic memoir SMASHED: an electrifying debut novel about a family being torn apart by the woman who claims to love them most

Josephine Hurst has her family under control. With two beautiful daughters, a brilliantly intelligent son, a tech-guru of a husband, and a historical landmark home, her life is picture perfect. But living in this matriarch’s determinedly cheerful, yet subtly controlling domain hasn’t been easy for her family, and when her oldest daughter, Rose, runs off with a mysterious boyfriend, Josephine tightens her grip, gradually turning her flawless home into a darker sort of prison.

Resentful of her sister’s newfound freedom, Violet turns to eastern philosophy, hallucinogenic drugs, and extreme fasting, eventually landing herself in a psych ward. Meanwhile, her brother, Will, recently diagnosed with Asperger's, shrinks further into a world of self-doubt. Their father, Douglas, finds resolve in the bottom of a bottle—an addict craving his own chance to escape. Josephine struggles to maintain the family’s impeccable façade, but when a violent incident leads to a visit from child protective services, the truth about the Hursts might finally be revealed.

From Booklist
Zailckas, known for her biting memoirs Smashed: Story of a Drunken Girlhood (2005) and Fury: True Tales of a Girl Gone Ballistic (2010), turns to the (hopefully) fictional tale of a woman hell-bent on manipulating the world around her. Matriarch Josephine doesn’t quite have things under control the way she would prefer. Her husband is an alcoholic; her son is on the autism spectrum; her younger daughter, Violet, has just been committed to a mental hospital; and her older daughter is a runaway. But to the outside world, this extremely dysfunctional family looks practically flawless, thanks to Josephine’s well-plotted machinations. When she concocts a story meant to keep Violet locked away, it means a visit from Child Protective Services that puts the family in a spotlight, and Josephine’s carefully constructed world begins to crumble (much like the Martha Stewart scones she has ready for them upon their arrival). Josephine is a truly frightening character—realistically flawed with just the right touch of over-the-top madness—and Zailckas crafts an intriguing mystery surrounding this family that will keep readers on edge as she slowly peels back layer after layer of deception. --Rebecca Vnuk

FIVE STARS
By B. Hayes
I loved this book! I was definitely cheering for Violet. In a sense I felt for her, because I remember my teenage years. It's a very tough part of growing up, especially when you feel like your mother isn't quite there for you. The one person you should be able to always count on, and you can't. As far as Will goes, I feel bad for him, I think he's going to struggle with a lot of things through out his life. Mostly socially because of how Josephine shaped him.
Douglas never seemed to have meant any harm. I think he was so used to Josephine controlling everything, that he just went with it and lost sight of the most important things; his kids.
Josephine, I'll just say that she didn't get nearly what she deserved. She is a sad, sad, human being.
Every mother, father and teenager should probably read this!

Very gripping look into siblings dealing with mental mother. I especially enjoyed the way the author went back and forth between brother and sister alternating chapters. It was a chance to see how Mom affected everyone's lives. And her methods were diabolical!

Review
As any homemaker knows, Villas, the former food and wine editor for Town & Country magazine, drives home the point that once a food substance is ground up, there is very little that cannot be done with it. Here is a sweeping survey of 200 recipes, covering the highs and lows of minced chicken, beef, pork, and seafood. Villas employs dips, loaves, patties, casseroles, and sausages to create a multicultural mosaic that includes everything from gefilte fish to Scottish deviled kidney spread, from Russian salmon croquettes to Cincinnati chili. Along the way, some lost history is also unearthed. It turns out that the original Coney Island dog was actually a bun filled with chopped frankfurter, pickle, eggs, bacon, and sauerkraut, and that a truly authentic croques monsieur calls for the ham to be coarsely ground. Each two-page recipe starts off with a brief paragraph in which the author conveys some historical notes or serving suggestions. This is followed by a succinct ingredients list, and then the preparation instructions, which rarely consist of more than four or five steps. Like a fine batch of hamburger, the book itself is of uniform simplicity and composition throughout. (Oct.) (Publishers Weekly, June 2011)

A Clever and Timely Twist for Meats and Seafoods
By Dee Long
Leave it to former Town & Country food and wine editor James Villas to come up such a timely topic for our economic times, how to use economical ground meats and seafoods to create great dishes.
From the simplicity of "The Perfect American Hamburger" to the ethnic "Jamaican Chicken-Stuffed Plaintains' and the regionally-inspired California Lobster and Avocado Salad in Radiocchi Cups, "From the Ground Up" covers a wide range of applications for ground meats and seafoods.
Villas has relied on his world-wide travels and solid knowledge of cooking traditions around the globe to offer more than 200 recipes, along with practical tips for doing your own meat grinding at home. Most of the recipes are great for groups or for preparing ahead of time to dole out during the week.
You will never look at a pound of ground beef or turkey in the supermarket case the same again after reading "From the Ground Up" - visions of Scandinavian Meatballs, Cajun Boudin Rouge or Norwegian Croquettes will be dancing in your head instead.

Has it all!
By Hello Happy
Ground meats are about the most flexible foods around. There's just one problem: What do I do with it for dinner tonight?

Actually, that's no longer a problem, with From the Ground Up. Author, James Villas -- a Food & Wine editor, renowned cookbook author, and James Beard Award winner -- takes us around the world with ever-versatile ground meats, including beef, pork, chicken, turkey, veal, lamb, and even seafood (ceviche, anyone?). And when I say, "around the world", I mean it; the book really is a culinary voyage across the globe, in its 400 pages of mouth-watering recipes.

For instance, in the first of eleven chapters, on Appetizers, Canapes, and Dips, the thirty two recipes range from Boston Clam Dip, to Greek Lamb, Raisin and Pine Nut Spanakopitas, back to Key West for Conch Fritters (yum!) to a Japanese Shrimp Spread with Sake, a French Country Pate, or Singapore Crabmeat and Peanut Toasts.

Other chapters in From the Ground Up include Soups and Salads, Sandwiches and Turnovers, Patties, Balls and Dumplings, Pies, Quiches, and Souffles, Casseroles and Pastas, Hashes and Chilies, Sausage, Sauces and many more.

I think you probably get the idea: without exaggeration, From the Ground Up is THE authoritative work on ground meat dishes of all kinds. Any recipe you've ever had -- or wanted to have -- with any type of ground meat is likely to be found here. And what's more, the recipes are the kind you will actually make, over and over again, with many sure to become family favorites. Now to get busy making Meatballs Stroganoff with that ground round in the fridge... My family is going to love it!

Great cookbook
By George Erdosh
//From the Ground Up// would benefit any cook's kitchen library, novice to advanced. Though it has no illustration, it is a handsome trade paperback with clear, large prints and 210 recipes using ground meats of every possible kind. The book is well written, the head notes are excellent and worth reading (even for those who never bother reading them). The introduction is thorough telling you everything you need to know about ground meats. The recipe writing is equally good using logical steps (some of which many recipes writers neglect) and the ingredients are mostly easily available. The serving sizes indicated are designed for very large eaters--in most you can multiply the number by one-and-half and will still have leftovers.||The variety of recipes are astonishing and taken from cuisines around the world; ranging from simple like American hamburgers to complex French pâtés. Occasional recipes (like Coney Island Dogs) don't use ground meat but includes it in the pre-processed ingredient. The type of preparations also covers the cooking spectrum from appetizers to hashes and chilies, even forced meats and sausages. Layout could've been better though most recipes are placed on single or facing pages. The well cross-referenced index is perfect.

Thinking about and Enacting Curriculum in

Thinking about and Enacting Curriculum in “Frames of War”, edited by Rahat Naqvi and Hans Smits, responds to the challenges Judith Butler posed about the precariousness of life and questions about how we apprehend, and take up ethically, our responsibilities for those who are considered “Other.” The notion of enframing asks us to consider what conditions our understanding of others, and how we open up what curriculum concepts and theories mean in the contexts of complex conditions for educational practices, such as recent wars, which have brought to forefront critical questions of human recognition and the precariousness of the conditions in which human flourishing is possible.
An overarching objective of this book is the meaning of a call to ethics, and how discussion of framing and frames is a provocation to think about our responsibilities as curriculum scholars and practitioners. The authors take up the limits of knowledge, and present the challenge to curriculum theory to think in terms of not just understanding the frames through which we apprehend the Other, but also how we might re-frame our thinking as a radical call to responsibility. Each chapter in Smits and Naqvi’s Thinking about and Enacting Curriculum in “Frames of War” illustrates these concepts in diverse ways, but with common interest and concern, considering how curriculum is and ought to be fundamentally engaged with re-thinking our frames of apprehension.

Review
Reframing the curricular challenge educators face after a decade of war, the contributors to this remarkable collection testify to the ethical demands of our time, our place, and our profession. What does it mean for us to teach now, in a time laced by hate, suffering, and trauma but professionally determined to find a very different future? Each of these essays provides provocative paths, theoretical and practical, to that future. In this resounding collection we hear once again the sound of silence breaking, supporting us to rearticulate our pedagogical convictions in this time of terrorism, reframing curriculum as committed to intercultural understanding and global justice. (William F. Pinar, University of British Columbia)

Famously, Greek dramatist Aeschylus remarked that “in war, the first casualty is truth.” In this fine, original and timely collection, Rahat Naqvi and Hans Smits have provided a valuable forum in which curriculum scholars can ‘speak truth to power’ in the post-911 era and explore ways to understand and challenge how curriculum is enframed and enacted in contemporary classrooms. (George Richardson, University of Alberta)

Rahat Naqvi is an associate professor in the area of Language and Diversity Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Calgary. Miracle Men: Hershiser, Gibson, and the Improbable 1988 Dodgers, by Josh Suchon

The 1988 World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers are best remembered for Kirk Gibson’s dramatic home run, Orel Hershiser’s pitching dominance, and manager Tommy Lasorda’s masterfully corny motivation, but there was much more that made the season memorable, bittersweet, and controversial, and this book explains it all. Using hundreds of hours of new interviews with players, coaches, broadcasters, and fans and combing through newspapers and magazines, Josh Suchon takes a new generation of Dodgers fans back to their memorable 1988 championship season. From the end of Don Sutton’s Hall of Fame career and the memorable 46-day stretch of pitching by Hershiser that hasn’t been equaled since to unlikely playoff heroes Mike Scioscia, Mickey Hatcher, and Mike Davis, Miracle Men encapsulates the fever and fervor that surrounded the team and the city of Los Angeles in the summer and fall of 1988.

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "GREAT BOOK ON THE CLASSIC 1988 CHAMPION DODGERS... BUT..."
By Rick Shaq Goldstein
As a born and raised Brooklyn Dodger to Los Angeles Dodger fan... whose family moved from New York to Los Angeles the same year as the Dodgers... let me first state that this is a long overdue tribute to what is now the twenty-fifth anniversary of *The-1988-World-Champion-Los-Angeles-Dodgers*! The author has done a wonderful job in creating a finely detailed... both statistically... and intimately... behind the clubhouse doors... portrayal... of how the truly miraculous drive to the 1988 World Championship was accomplished both on the field and off.

The sub-title of this book is "Hershiser, Gibson, and the Improbable 1988 Dodgers"... and "The Bulldog" and Gibby"... are rightfully... and truly... highlighted. From Hershiser's record-setting *FIFTY-NINE-CONSECUTIVE-SCORELESS-INNING-STREAK* which broke Hall-of-Fame Dodger great... and coincidentally... one of their announcers... during this historical year.... "Big D"... Don Drysdale's... Major League record... to Kirk Gibson's... emotionally... and historically... reverberating... World Series game one winning... pinch hit homerun... that has been selected as one of the ten greatest moments in baseball history... by many historians and publications. Along the way "The Bulldog" Hershiser won the **CY YOUNG AWARD... THE WORLD SERIES RING... THE NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES MVP... THE WORLD SERIES MVP... and the much heralded... SPORT ILLUSTRATED SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD. Gibson in addition to his "one-for-the-ages" World Series pinch hit game winning homerun... also won the regular season National League MVP award... and he rightfully won it for not only what he did on the field... but what he did in the clubhouse... and on the practice field.

It was pretty well known the stand that Gibby took right at the beginning of spring training that year... when a practical joke was pulled on him that he refused to accept as the way to build a championship team... and he literally challenged the whole team including manager Tom Lasorda... but the story of **THE SHOWDOWN**... that took place in the Dodger clubhouse in July after a tough loss to the Cardinals... when he physically challenged Pedro Guerrero... and a few of Guerrero's "little buddies" from the Cardinals... who made the mistake of entering the Dodger's locker room... while Kirk Gibson was on "watch"... is an all-time baseball classic! And this book is full of such beautiful behind the scenes baseball drama. Without giving away too many details... one item that really surprised me... was that one of the conditions that had to be met to sign Gibson... was that he had to talk to Steve Sax before he made his decision. Coincidentally... one of the big surprises in this book was the almost universal, unlimited, compliments regarding Sax's enthusiasm... hustle... and love for his teammates. I met Sax once after his playing days and that's exactly the way he was in private also. It's great to know that there really are some guys that are good on an off the field... with or without the cameras rolling.

This is a well-rounded book that covers stars at their peak... stars that are almost folk-heroes... like Fernando Valenzuela... on their way down... (and here's a great stat for true old-school baseball fanatics.... Fernando average 266 innings pitched per year from 1982-1987... and had 255 consecutive starts!)... players that never hit their original projected stardom such as Tim Belcher... but after looking deep within themselves... came to a self-awareness... that allowed them to have their moment in the sun.

I can go on and on with great moments presented in this book... but let me also follow-up on the "BUT" ... in my review title.

The story of this miraculous year is told in date sequence... which of course makes sense. EXCEPT... for Hershiser's six shutouts. For an example you just got done reading about the game on April 30, 1988... and the next page is September 4, 1988... Hershiser's first shutout in the streak... and then you go back to May 10, 1988... then later on you're at May 26, 1988... and then you go to his second consecutive shutout on September 10, 1988... and then back to June 3, 1988... and so on... throughout the book. It just makes absolutely no sense... and destroys all continuity every time it happens. I can't for the life of me understand how the author or editor would allow this to happen. The second maddening thing is how many times the author uses the word "reflected" when quoting subjects in the book as they are interviewed.

Then a head scratcher which must have got past whoever edited the book. On page fifty-two the author writes: "In the Dodgers' third, Sax doubled, stole second, and scored on an errant throw." Please tell me how Sax could have doubled AND THEN STOLE SECOND??

One last thing on the critical side. I was trying to look up the Steve Sax incident in the detailed index in the back of the book... and guess what?? Steve Sax is missing from the index. Maybe when he doubled and stole second... he also stole his name out of the index.

Putting these few things aside... I would still highly recommend this book. Especially as I "reflect" on the joy my son and I experienced during the 1988 baseball season.

a great baseball book
By Reid Mccormick
"All year long they looked to him to light the fire and all year long he answered the demands."

"High fly ball into right field. She is gone!"

"In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened."

I was only three years old that amazing night; the night Kirk Gibson made baseball history. Which means I was only three years old the last time the Dodgers won (or even appeared in) the World Series.

Watching the video, I have relived that moment over and over again. Sometimes I even close my eyes just so I can hear Vin Scully's golden voice with the roar of crowd in the background.

Obviously as a Dodger fan that moment holds a lot of value, but I think any baseball fan gets goose bumps watching Gibson take Eckersley deep to right to take Game 1.

Miracle Men is a fantastic summary of the 1988 Dodger season. Suchon does a great job describing the energy and focus of Gibson, the stability of Hershiser, and the ingenuity (or luck depending on how you see it) of general manager Fred Claire.
I wish more baseball books were written like this. Suchon does not try to throw in some literary themes or show us how the Dodgers changed the culture of Los Angeles. He gives us the facts and the story. He talks about the men on the field, the men in the dugout, and the men in the clubhouse.

I know the author did his job when I know the ending yet every page keeps me in suspense.

Great look back
By Manderly
This is a must read for any true Dodgers fan and most baseball fans. A Giants, A's, or even Mets fan may want to skip this book. For others though not only does the book relive a lot of great moments in baseball history it's also an interesting look at how the game has changed in 25 years, especially pitching. Such on does an excellent job of conjuring up all the suspense and emotion of Gibson's home run, but it's Hershiser's season-long accomplishments that make the book.

How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization, by Thomas E. Woods Jr.

Ask someone today where Western Civilization originated, and he or she might say Greece or Rome. But what is the ultimate source of Western Civilization? Bestselling author and professor Thomas E. Woods, Jr. provides the long neglected answer: the Catholic Church. In the new paperback edition of his critically-acclaimed book, How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization, Woods goes far beyond the familiar tale of monks copying manuscripts and preserving the wisdom of classical antiquity. Gifts such as modern science, free-market economics, art, music, and the idea of human rights come from the Catholic Church, explains Woods. In How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization, you’ll learn:

  • Why modern science was born in the Catholic Church
  • How Catholic priests developed the idea of free-market economics five hundred years before Adam Smith
  • How the Catholic Church invented the university
  • Why what you know about the Galileo affair is wrong
  • How Western law grew out of Church canon law
  • How the Church humanized the West by insisting on the sacredness of all human life

No institution has done more to shape Western civilization than the two-thousand-year-old Catholic Church—and in ways that many of us have forgotten or never known. How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization is essential reading for recovering this lost truth.

From the Publisher
Ask a college student today what he knows about the Catholic Church and his answer might come down to one word: "corruption." But that one word should be "civilization." Western civilization has given us the miracles of modern science, the wealth of free-market economics, the security of the rule of law, a unique sense of human rights and freedom, charity as a virtue, splendid art and music, a philosophy grounded in reason, and innumerable other gifts that we take for granted as the wealthiest and most powerful civilization in history. But what is the ultimate source of these gifts? Bestselling author and professor Thomas E. Woods, Jr. provides the long neglected answer: the Catholic Church. Woods’s story goes far beyond the familiar tale of monks copying manuscripts and preserving the wisdom of classical antiquity. In How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization, you’ll learn: · Why modern science was born in the Catholic Church · How Catholic priests developed the idea of free-market economics five hundred years before Adam Smith · How the Catholic Church invented the university · Why what you know about the Galileo affair is wrong · How Western law grew out of Church canon law · How the Church humanized the West by insisting on the sacredness of all human life No institution has done more to shape Western civilization than the two-thousand-year-old Catholic Church—and in ways that many of us have forgotten or never known. A remarkable response to postmodern critiques of the church
By Gavin L. Johnston
Over the last 30 years it has become fashionable (perhaps mandatory) to misrepresent the Church's role in science, education, economics, law, medicne, philosophy, and charitable acts. 90% of the postmodern myth about Catholicism is one-sided, intentionaly combative, and overflowing with ridicule -- the Church has done only evil and Christianity has stood in the way of everything good and progressive. This book is a wonderful response to these attacks and addresses the biases authors exibit. It is compelling and uplifting. It expounds on the role of the Church in the advancement of the sciences, the rights of women, and moral conviction.

Is the author biased? Certainly, but what author is not. After decades of attacks, ridicule, and contempt from so many quarters, it is wonderful to see someone discuss the contributions of the Catholic church.

A necessary antidote
By otro lector mas
Detractors charge that this book is not an evenhanded account of Church history. It isn't and it never purports to be. Just about every bad thing conceivably associated with the Catholic Church has already been publicized in enough books and documentaries, which then resonate prominently in the mainstream media. This book will give you what the mainstream media overlooks, disregards, or downright suppresses.

The Galileo affair must stand as the most devious distortion of scientific facts ever propagated. The chapter dealing with these events ought to be read by every human being on earth. As an amateur astronomer, I was aware that scientific evidence in Galileo's time compellingly favored Ptolemy's geocentric solar system model (especially regarding accurate prediction of planetary positions-the critical test of celestial mechanics). I did not know how freely Galileo had been allowed to expound the heliocentric theory in Catholic universities before his arrogance brought him to butt heads with the ecclesiastical hierarchy. I further did not know that it was astronomers in Catholic Church observatories (under the leadership of Cassini) who irrefutably validated Kepler's heliocentric model by measuring the positions and apparent diameters of the Sun.

On the flip side the author could have also debunked the myth of Giordano Bruno, whom popular books such as "The Science Class You Wish You Had" glorify as "martyred for science" by the Catholic Church. Turns out Giordano Bruno was a subversive proto-anarchist who had been expelled from Switzerland by the Calvinists and from Germany by the Lutherans, and who fled England facing imprisonment. His views on the heliocentric system had liitle to do with his eventual execution.

The chapter on the accomplishments of Fr. Ruggiero Boscovich--who to this day remains essentially ignored but whom scientific giants as Kelvin, Faraday and Maxwell credited with formulating modern atomic theory--was an astounding revelation.

If I were to criticize the book for something it would be for the notable ommissions that came to my mind. Most of us from high school biology can remember Fr. Gregor Mendel as the father of modern genetics. Probably quite a few others know that René Descartes was a zealous Catholic who wielded arms in wars of religion, and whose Catholic philosophical education was fundamental to his subsequent contributions. I would be surprised if many people have heard of Fr. Georges Lemaitre, who provided the mathematical framework which advanced the Big Bang theory from an egregious pipedream to the cosmological foundation which it has become. Perhaps these may be included in a future edition.

So it may be a one-sided book but it is completely factual, and were it not from works like this nowadays you will likely never know the Catholic Church has been the major positive influence in Western Civilization.

History is written by the victors
By R. P. Poletti
Much of what we Americans know of European history is based on English historians who came after Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church. Many clearly had an anti-Catholic bent as have many other European historians who wrote after the Reformation. The French purged libraries during the French Revolution so little reliable French history predating the reformation exists there. German Lutherans and Swiss Calvinists did much the same.

Does this mean that history as we know it is wrong? It seems more than probable.

Thus this book becomes rather important.

While fairly well written, it is a bit dry in some areas. Woods' research and reasoning seems sound. He can editorialize a little, but unlike many other historians I have read, he does not try to hide the fact.

By presenting the Church in, at times a neutral and at other times a favorable light, Woods departs from long held historical assumptions. That can be disturbing to some, but he is quick to cite sources and, where important, mentions whether the sources are secular or not.

If you enjoy history, you will find this book intriguing, especially if you like conspiricy theories.
