Helpful, well organized and clear

This book is well designed and very clear on what to do, and how to do it. I would recommend this to anyone who needs more ideas on actual activites to facilitate to improve cross-cultural communication and understanding. I work in student affairs and plan on using this book often. I like how it is truly focused on activities and includes everything you need to know for that activity, including the level of 'risk' involved (how intense the activity could be for participants). That is very helpful in using the activities to build a plan to continue your groups development.

Book is not up to par for academia

This book is a nice collection of opinions by its three authors of what Christians should do in a business context. It is fairly thorough, covering a large host of topics. It's major drawback is that is written for an academic audience, yet fails to deliver at that standard. Academic works need to be full of support and references and this book as very little references (even Biblical). The book is full of statements stating what Christians should do and how they should act in certain contexts without any support to back their opinions. I say this, because some of the things they say are very debatable. It is an OK read, but I was quite disappointed due to its lack of support.

Conveys admirably the complexity that is Ahmad ibn Hanbal

I cannot come away from reading this book without feeling a deep sense of respect for Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and I am not one who subscribes to the rigid proclamations of people who follow the school of thought that eventually took him as its founder.

Melchert does a wonderful job of conveying the inner tensions that defined Ahmad's life. Ultimately, Ahmad was a "melancholy figure", one - like any individual - who had his inner contradictions and ambivalences. He led a very austere life, yet did not advocate people to be 'spiritual athletes', testing their endurance with lengthy feats of denial. He advocated for a hadith-based religion, which ultimately triumphed, but he was not above using reason if it suited his ultimate project, although times he did it grudgingly and discreetly.

The book is short and a great read, with the last few chapters particularly most meaningful. His occasion 'digressions' that discuss modern analogies and comparisons with Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Protestantism, and modern Islamists were helpful. The chapter on hadith is somewhat technical, but doesn't detract from the overall thrust of the book. Melchert certainly has an affection for his subject, which he acknowledges and explains in his Conclusion. turbulent times during the reign of Karim Khan

This is a very researched documentation of the fights and battles for supremacy around the time of Karim Khan. More than the first half of the book deals with those matters. The succession of facts, names and dates is by times is very detailed and difficult to follow, but it shows the atmosphere of instability and violence in those years. The last third of the book is about how Zand behaved in his court and with people and seems very brief but delightful. Perhaps the accounts of those peace time actions told by witnesses are rare. I was shocked by the frequency of blinding and castration of opponents and captured hostages that went on in Persia. I would like to see a new book with more detail about the character of Karim Khan, his personal life (wives and children), his Lor accent (mentioned once in this book), with perhaps anecdotes from his current descendants or paintings of Shiraz during his reign. Anything that could illustrate would be great.

RECOMMENDED - BUT NOT FOR HOLIDAY READING!

Overall an excellent book. Historically, I agree with the other reviewers - it is heavy on the wars, conflicts and strife and light on the many 'renaissance' and peace time activities of one of the greatest men in Iran's long and interesting history. However, very little is written about Karim Khan and the Zand dynasty, in particular in English. This book makes available to the interested public a book (whose more comprehensive version is out of print and priced in three figures) and it is well written, superbly researched, unbiased and provides an accompaniment to other books on the topic to give the interested a feel for Karim Khan Zand and his era. Note that John Perry is one of the world's leading experts on Karim Khan Zand and the era.

This book is not biography of Karmi Khan Zand, this book is established on framework of power struggle theory.

This book illustrated that how after assassination of King Nader, there was a power vaccume in Iran. Thus, Feudal lords wage war against each other for top job which was Kingship. In this situtation, Karim Khan Zand became King. Interestingly, Karmi Khan Zand did not call himself King, he called himself as author mentioned Deputy of People or Parsi word is Vakil.

Karim Khan Zand was following Iran's political culture which was a king to be just and kind to his citizens, as a result, Karim Khan Zand saw himself as a Deputy of People, he was close to his citizens, and when occasion raised, he was just.

Author mentioned that Iran was a confedration, Iran's regional political system was always provincial system.

Author translated word "kalantor" as mayor. Whereas, word "Kalantor" means a constable, and mayor word is "shahrdar".

Over all, the book is fun to read and educational.

About the Author
Atle Midttun is Professor at the Norwegian School of Management and Co-director of its Centre for Energy and the Environment. He holds a PhD from Uppsala University (Sweden) and a Magister Artium from the University of Oslo (Norway). His research focuses on energy and Environmental Policy issues, especially their regulatory and industrial organisation aspects. He has been the editor of a number of books, including Approaches and Dilemmas of Economic Regulation (forthcoming), European Electricity Systems in Transition (published by Elsevier Science) and The Politics of Energy Forecasting. He is also the author of an extensive collection of journal articles on these topics.

Insightful: Different Challenge in Different Energy Markets

Dr Midttun has edited a fantastic masterpiece. As other books in the Elsevier Global Energy Policy and Economics Series, this book brings a insightful and interesting approach about different challenges in the European Energy Sector. Chapters (02) Nordic Business Strategies; (03)Corporate Strategies in British Electricity; (06)French Power Systems; and (08)Power Co. in Brazil are very interesting and well written. I strongly recommend not only this book but also the Elsevier Series.
