Good Introduction

This rather short introduction (138 pages), to Abu Nuwas' poetry gives a general idea of his work, with a scholarly critical approach. It contains useful explanations (the author likes sometimes to use instead, the word "exegesis"!!), to the complex world of Arabic poetry and culture of the Eighth Century.
The author, an expert in Arabic and Islamic literature at NYU, clarifies the ideas, imagery, and play on words behind Abu Nuwas' verse, and reveals why he is considered one of the greatest Arabic poets, who had an important place and influence, not only in Arabic literature, but in the world. He also introduces the colorful personality of Abu Nuwas, his humour, his inventive imagination, his genius, as well as his outrageous irreverence.
It is also important to underline that the book is the latest of only THREE books available in English, exclusively covering Abu Nuwas' work. Many references to Abu Nuwas and some examples of his work can be found in various general books on Arabic and Islamic poetry and literature.
Those who are not familiar with Abu Nuwas, will be surprised to learn that his work covered a huge spectrum of themes, among which the most important and better known are the following three: praise of wine, erotic courting of women, and erotic courting of men. However, many consider his other, less controversial, themes to be equally important, if not even more important.
In his verse, Abu Nuwas never hesitated to use the most open and shamless language to sing the pleasures of drinking wine and having sex, with women as well as men. This of course placed Abu Nuwas by conservatives and homophbics, even during his time, among the libertines and pornographers who should be sensored. One has to admit that, many of Abu Nuwas' verses, though very witty and clever, can be extremely shocking to those who do not have the necessary open mind nor the respect and admiration for the power of art and creativity, no matter how outrageous.
I strongly recommend the book to those who are interested in Abu Nuwas, or who would like to discover his work. However, I would like to underline that I found the style of the author to be heavy and pedantic, with constant use of rather archaic Old English words, when other less complicated and more readable words, giving the same meaning, are available. I also wished that, instead of giving his "exegesis" two thirds of the space in his book and only one third to Abu Nuwas' verse, he would have reversed the shares!!

Pulling it all together

I am no great scholar of Arabic poetry but, as a poet, I've read it in translation whenever available for the last 30 years of my life. As you might imagine, I've accumulated a strong sense of what's going on in both ancient and modern Arabic poets and how they achieve it in terms of form and imagery. What this book has done is to pull it all together for me. If you're interested in reading Abu Nuwas's poetry, this is decidedly not the place to begin. But if you want a scholarly read that combines elements of biography, literature, and analysis of various poems in various forms, this is it. It's dense. It's pithy. It almost reads like a dissertation. It's exactly what I need at this point.

This is the free-flowing version.

This is the free-flowing version, good for those more interested in the story than in the accuracy with the paper version. There are beautiful drawings and it is an awesome chance of practicing Brazilian Portuguese if you are reading for this purpose, since the story uses many Brazilian slang words.

I first read this book as a small boy, and this is, as far as I can recall the first book I read that showed me that emotions can be read on paper as well.

As I read this book in my hotel room in Kathmandu, I was transported to a simple childhood but yet rooted in such vivid imagination. I love this book, it is a simple but powerful tale of love that lives within us all.

With the introduction of various types of incentives for renewable sources based electricity generation, the world is witnessing the rapid growth in wind, solar, biomass and other renewable based generation. Unlike electricity generation schemes based on conventional energy sources, wind power systems suffer from the uncertainty of wind availability and variability of the wind speed. In this regard, this volume intends to bring out the original research work of researchers from academia and industry in understanding, quantifying and managing the risks associated with the uncertainty in wind variability in order to plan and operate a modern power system integrated with significant proportion of wind power generation with an acceptable level of reliability. The accurate prediction of wind speed variability is very important for operation of electric power system in secure and safe environment and will play a crucial role in defining the requirement of various types of services such as ancillary services in the power system. This may also affect the electricity market strategy of conventional resources based power producers in the power market.

About the Author

Dr Roy Billinton received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB, Canada, and the Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada. He was with the System Planning and Production Divisions, Manitoba Hydro. In 1964, he joined the University of Saskatchewan, where he served as the Head of the Electrical Engineering Department, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, Research and Extension, and the Acting Dean of Engineering, and is currently a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He has authored or coauthored eight books and more than 940 papers on power system reliability evaluation, economic system operation, and power system analysis. Dr. Billinton is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Canada, a Foreign Associate of the United States National Academy of Engineering, and a Professional Engineer in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada. The IEEE-PES honored Dr Billinton by initiating the Roy Billinton Power System Reliability Award in 2010.

 

Dr Rajesh Karki obtained his B.E. degree in electrical engineering from the Regional Engineering College (renamed National Institute of Technology), West Bengal, India in 1991, and MSc and PhD degress in electrical power engineering in 1997 and 2000 respectively from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He worked for academic institutions and different industries in Nepal between 1991 and 1995. He worked for GE Industrial Systems, Peterborough, ON, Canada during 2000-2002. He joined the University of Saskatchewan, Canada as an Assistant Professor in 2002, where he currently works as an Associate Professor. He chaired the Power Systems Research Group at the University of Saskatchewan during 2005-2012. His research interests include power system reliability and planning, and reliability modeling and analysis of renewable energy systems. He has served in various capacities in international conferences held in Canada and abroad. He has published over 70 papers in reputable international journals and peer reviewed conferences. He has completed several consulting projects on system planning and reliability for Canadian electric utilities. Dr Karki is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and a Professional Engineer in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada.

 

Dr Ajit Verma obtained B.Tech(Electrical Engineering) and PhD(Reliability Engineering) from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India in 1984 and 1988 respectively. He joined Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in 1988 where he holds the position of Professor of Electrical Engineering.  He is currently working as Professor of Technical Safety at University College Stord/Haugesund, Norway. He has supervised/co-supervised 28 PhDs and 88 Masters thesis in the area of Software Reliability, Reliable Computing, Power Systems Reliability (PSR), Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and Probabilistic Safety/Risk Assessment (PSA). He has over 195 publications in various journals and conferences. He is a senior member of IEEE and a life fellow of IETE. He is the Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Systems Assurance Engineering and Management (IJSAEM) published by Springer, as well as a member of the  Advisory Committee for the journal OPSEARCH also published by Springer. He has served as a Guest Editor of many international journals including IEEE Transactions on Reliability March, 2010. He has been Conference Chairman of various International Conferences and symposia.

About the Author
Philip Neri Powell holds a BA in philosophy/history, an MA in English, an MDiv, and a PhD in English (emphasis in poetry). After studying at Aquinas Institute in St. Louis, Missouri, and Oxford University, Fr. Powell entered studies at the Angelicum. Fr. Powell taught spirituality, liturgy, classical western literature, Catholic theology, and philosophical theology at the University of Dallas for three years before moving to Rome. He recently completed a pontifical license in philosophy and will begin work on a PhD.

A Wake-up for All School Reformers

I wish that every parent, politician, and educator who is interested in school reform would read this book. The insights may at first sound like educational heresy, but then most solid challenges to conventional wisdom do. Our nation has traveled much too long down the path of standardized learning, testing, and thinking to the detriment of one of our greatest assets, i.e. creativity that will be needed for all our tomorrows.

Glover re-examines and clarifies those distinctions. Sooner or later nearly everyone in education will be listening to what this man has said. Much of his thinking has implications for many facets of our society, from monetary to military.

I was happy with this book for diagnosing insect pests. There is a section near the back that covers other groups of invertebrates that are not insects, but this section does not include information on nematodes.
