About the Author
Antonella Tosti is Professor of Clinical Dermatology at the Miller School of Medicine of the University of Miami, US. She is also well-known in Europe as she was Professor of Dermatology at the University of Bologna for 20 years. Her research involves hair, nail and cosmetic disorders. She is member of many dermatological societies including the ADA, AAD, EADV, WDS and ISD. She is author of more than 600 publications and 20 books, several of them very successfully with Springer. Doris Hexsel is a Board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon. She published more than 100 Publications and she is the editor of 4 medical books (Cosmetic Use of Botulinum Toxin, Botulinum Toxin and Hyperhidrosis, Cosmetic Procedures in Etnic Patients, and, two editions of the book Cellulite: Pathophysiology and Treatment). She is the main investigator of the Brazilian Center of Studies in Dermatology and an active member of a number of professional associations, such as the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, Brazilian Society of Dermatologic Surgery, American Academy of Dermatology, International Society for Dermatologic Surgery, American Society of Dermatologic Surgery and others. She sits in the International Committee of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery and in the Board of Directors of the Brazilian Society for Dermatologic Surgery and International Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

not talmud torah but feminist agenda, argued poorly

It would be really nice if she spent time with actual analysis of the material, rather than repeatedly whacking the reader over the head with her feminist agenda. I mean, I'm an Ortho Jewish feminist myself, but I don't feel like I need to read between the lines and infer all manner of evidence that the ancient sages are so liberal and woman-huggy at every turn. Hello, context? Hello, sparing use of the argument-from-silence? Logic? Ack. Her book about the Jerusalem Talmud was just as bad...one approaches the Talmud to learn Torah from it, not to paint one's agenda onto it.

I've given my daughter two books in this series. The other one was Pumpkin Pie. Ure has captured her attention. I recommend the series for girls aged 11 to 13. I also read this book and was impressed with the storytelling. It was hard to put it down.

The story is good. But I can't understand the story. Its totally mixed up. In addition, there is no inteesting extracts. But I still stink its only OK! So think twice before reading. But its great and the author is great too.

North is a retired Marine infantry veteran of Vietnam and was a key player in the Iran-Contra affair. This book is a mostly workmanlike presentation of his experiences as a war correspondent for FOX (which shares copyright on this book) as the U.S. invaded Iraq. Any political uproar it may cause is likely to stem largely from Pavlovian responses to the name of the author, a response that ignores that he has written both fiction and nonfiction as well as having been a Marine officer. So it is hardly surprising that he does excellent work covering a Marine aviation unit, one appointed to transport assault troops and evacuate wounded in aging helicopters-never without risk and sometimes with bloody incidents. These are vividly and knowledgeably described, as is the Marines' courage and professionalism. Nor is it surprising to witness the empathy between a retired Marine about to become a grandfather and younger Marines about to see combat. The briefer coverage of the armored units of the 4th Infantry Division is a little frustrating, and the polemics against antiwar journalists and politicians, while unlikely to offend readers who share the author's views, feel redundant. So does the capsule history of Iraq in the appendix, although well-written enough to give the author credibility as a popular historian. Even the larger issue of the linkage between a correspondent, a network and a publisher who are all politically simpatico can hardly be made into anything especially sinister without the same kind of political partisanship that the book exhibits in its less inspiring moments. A good, balanced read

For those who think that Oliver North is simply a cheering section for our nation's military, read the book. Certainly retired Marine Lt. Col. North would be predisposed to like the armed services (not, in my view, a bad thing), but he does not hesitate to point out the flaws that the organization has. Check out the section on the pause during the war. Here and in other reports, North provides criticism of how things were being handled.
As a friend of Lt. Col. Jerry Driscoll, I was interested to see him featured repeatedly in "War Stories." I knew that North was imbedded with HMM-268 and that my friend and he interacted a lot. What I didn't know was what close scrapes my friend had been involved in, and this after talking with him shortly after his return from Iraq. So, Jerry, thank you for your service, and I expect that there are many families in America who owe the lives of their sons and daughters solely to the bravery of your and your Red Dragons.

NORTH GETS IT RIGHT!

LtCol North gets it right in this book!
Unfortunately, unlike a soldier from Columbus, GA who wrote the review dtd 16 January. The soldier impugns the veracity of LtCol North's account of the evacuation of a dead corpsman. How do I know what really happened? I am the pilot who DID evacuate the corpsman, and I can vouch for the version in the book. The statistics of the Medical Company in question have little or no bearing on whether this happened like North says it did. The Company should be offended at the actions of one of their own members, and not at North for telling the truth.
While there are minor inaccuracies in this book, (e.g., he lists my unit as Marine Light/Attack Helicopter Squadron 267 when it was actually 269) they are not substantive, nor do they alter the gist of the individual stories. This is a great read - LtCol North got it right!

About the Author
Kazumi Tabata is a Grand Master in the Shotokan and Shorinji styles of Karate. He was sent to this country in the 1960s by his teacher Professor and Master Isao Obata (senior student of Gichin Funakoshi) to promote Karate in the United States.

Shortly after his arrival in this country, he established and serves as the Chief Instructor of the North American Karate Federation, consisting of schools throughout the United States, Bermuda, and Europe, and the New England Collegiate Karate Conference.

Over the years, Master Tabata has had a wide impact on the martial arts, including training the local tactical police force, authoring several books including Secret Tactics and Mind Power, and hosting the first Boston-Asian Festival in 1993.

This book gives a representative survey of the state of the art of research on gas-surface interactions. It provides an overview of the current understanding of gas surface dynamics and, in particular, of the reactive and non-reactive processes of atoms and small molecules at surfaces. Leading scientists in the field, both from the theoretical and the experimental sides, write in this book about their most recent advances.
Surface science grew as an interdisciplinary research area over the last decades, mostly because of new experimental technologies (ultra-high vacuum, for instance), as well as because of a novel paradigm, the ‘surface science’ approach. The book describes the second transformation which is now taking place pushed by the availability of powerful quantum-mechanical theoretical methods implemented numerically. In the book, experiment and theory progress hand in hand with an unprecedented degree of accuracy and control. The book presents how modern surface science targets the atomic-level understanding of physical and chemical processes at surfaces, with particular emphasis on dynamical aspects. In 1890, a 24-year-old African-American and Southern Presbyterian missionary named William Sheppard left New York for the Congo. During the next 20 years, Sheppard explored that country and in the process discovered a lake that now bears his name; made the first meaningful Western contact with the Kuba kingdom, one of the last native African dynasties, and failed in his attempt to create a "utopia of African-American achievement in Africa." He also clashed with the Belgian colonial authorities, exposing their brutal, genocidal treatment of Africans and, as a result, found himself at the center of a charged, internationally monitored trial in which the powerful performance of lawyer Emile Vandervelde, the leader of the Belgian Socialist Party, overcame a claim that Sheppard had slandered the foremost Belgian producer of rubber. Kennedy (The Exes), a novelist, is captivated by her charismatic subject charisma evidenced by Sheppard's enduring presence in the oral histories of the Kuba and, like the novelist she is, offers fully developed portraits of others in Sheppard's orbit as well. She speculates with a modern feminist's perspective about the inner life of Sheppard's wife, Lucy, who saw two of her children die in Africa, and she examines the reactions to Sheppard of white missionaries, who were unable to succeed in the native culture as well as he. Kennedy also explores the irony of Sheppard, who was made a Kuba prince, facing segregation and discrimination at home. Kennedy is an engaging writer and ably captures the undercurrent of horror found everywhere in the late 19th-century Congo while honoring Sheppard's accomplishments, heroism and character. Novelist Kennedy (The Exes) recaptures the incredible life and adventures of William Henry Sheppard, a submissively complex African American missionary funded by the segregated Southern Presbyterian Church in 1890 to explore unmapped regions of the Congo and win converts. When he returned to the United States, he was nicknamed "Black Livingstone" in reference to David Livingstone and spoke all over the country to raise funds for the church. But unlike that famous British explorer-missionary, Sheppard identified himself with the Congolese culture and people. When he went back to the Congo after King Leopold II sold the colony to the Belgian government, he realized that it had been turned into a company town and was in ruin, a testimony to the ravages of the rubber trade. (Adam Hochschild covers similar territory in his excellent King Leopold's Ghost, LJ 9/15/98.) Sheppard and other missionaries then worked to expose the exploitation and atrocities in the Congo. Ironically, when he finally returned home to stay, Sheppard, who fought for the rights of blacks in Africa, "lived under apartheid" at home in what was the Jim Crow era. Kennedy takes on racism and imperialism in this first book-length exploration of Sheppard and his life. AN OLD FASHIONED ADVENTURE STORY

In my younger years I read many a book about exploring Africa and hunting the animals as well as safaris' as written by various authors. Great reading!
This book is about a black man named William Henry Sheppard A/K/A
The Black Livingstone...for good reason. Others complain about using conjecture in writing this story, however, the author, Pagan Kennedy, admits there are huge holes missing in the life of William Sheppard and I believe she did a fine job in telling this story. To make it interesting she just had to use conjecture or there would have been no book. There are plenty of facts, however, to prove that a whole lot of life-threatening danger was involved and original exploration and pathfinding done by the Black Livingstone.
This is the story of a black man's life that started as a nobody, then through hard work and some chicanery became a sought after celebrity and then in the waning years again became a nobody.
The relationship between Sheppard and his wife is an interesting one. All of her life she dreamed of living a certain way and after MANY decades she finally realized her dreams as outlined in the epilogue.
This was a fine book for me as the author did well in assembling the information at hand. I had never heard of Sheppard and the others in this story and am glad I read it!

With Pagan Kennedy in Darkest Africa

Pagan Kennedy writes an interesting story about William Henry Sheppard, black Presbyterian pioneer missionary to nineteenth-century Congo Africa. The book is laced with quotations from original sources that give something of the flavor of the man and his times, as well as comments from his colleagues. Often, one wishes for more of the quotations and less reading between and behind the lines by the author.
Clearly, this is a work of historical fiction, leaning more to the fiction side than the history side. Although Kennedy relies on historical sources, she is primarily a fiction writer. It becomes evident in the way she frequently imagines the thoughts and motives of Sheppard and the other players in his history. One soon recognizes that Kennedy has created William Henry Sheppard in her own image and likeness. The nagging question remains on every page: how does Kennedy know the thoughts and motives of Sheppard and his missionary colleagues unless they are recorded in their writings or conversations with others?
The picture of Sheppard that emerges is of a strong but flawed individual using African exploration to escape American racism and social ostracism. Traditional religious ideas of the missionary as one who sacrifices his or her life to deliver the Christian message to those who have never heard is largely absent from this book. One wonders why Kennedy didn't just write a novel about a black southerner who goes to Africa as a missionary explorer. Then, she would not have to use so many "probably he was thinking" or "imagine that he" or "it must have seemed to him" and the like.
In the end, a disappointing book. The "real" story of Sheppard and his mission remains to be written.
