A Right-brainers Nightmare

I purchased this book several months ago and I have been slowly integrating into my work with special Ed children. Lots of good, solidly backed information that fits so well with Occupational Therapy in the Classroom. However, this book is not friendly towards the right-brained readers like myself. I had to read the muscle-checking section 20 times before I figured it out, and I am still a little confused. Three other OTs and two PT also struggled with her descriptions. I think this will be the downfall of this otherwise wonderful book.

The next revolution in education and parenting

Dr. Carla Hannaford is at the forefront of mind/body/heart integration. We are fortunate to have her sharing her expertise in Smart Moves and the present book. Muscle checking, like Brain Gym exercises, are understandably difficult to master just from a book. For over 20 years, I've been sceptical about muscle checking, wondering if it was due more to subjective variations in the application of pressure. But I begin to see more validity to its use now. Knowing the dominance factors and the 32 dominance profiles is a great help to appreciating our individual differences. There are also many suggestions for integration. One needs to go beyond the simplistic right/left brain dominance theories and even the 8 or 9 multiple intelligences. Education worldwide needs such a revolution in integration through physical movements and the development of heart intelligence and all the senses.

About the Author
Called the the patriarch of the anti-Globalization movement by The New York Times, Jerry Mander was Founder and is a Distinguished Fellow of the International Forum on Globalization. He also spent 15 years in the advertising business as president of Freeman, Mander & Gossage, including producing the famous Sierra Club campaigns of the 1960s that saved the Grand Canyon. He has BS and MS degrees in international economics, and he lives in Northern California.

So What's the Alternative?

In this book Jerry Mander deconstructs capitalism in a blistering critique. He grants that capitalism functioned relatively well in the US until the early 1900's because there was geographic room to expand and resources were plentiful. But now we have run out of room and we are hitting the limits of unending growth, on which capitalism is based.
The most common question Jerry is asked is, "So what is the alternative?" In his reply he presents a few ideas that need to be considered in searching for the answer:

1) Nature comes first. We need to live within the carrying capacity of the Earth in a steady state economy.
2) Localization. Economic activity and governance should be achieved at the lowest possible level: local, regional, state and only then, national.
3) New corporate structures. New forms of corporations need to be developed that go beyond traditional capitalism or socialism.
4) Hybrid economics. We may need a mixed economy combining free-market private enterprise, centralized planning and state-owned businesses.

I have two main comments. First, it is possible to lay out a more detailed alternative economic system. David Korten has done this in a book which proposes a Main Street-based rather than a Wall Street-based economy, meaning that business would be mostly decentralized and the existing stock market system would be radically modified. Second, when our existing form of capitalism inevitably collapses, what happens with our military system? National security spending currently consumes more than half of all federal discretionary spendingl. If defense spending were, say, cut in half, we would have to close most of our foreign military bases, significantly reduce spending on weapons development and invade fewer, if any foreign countries. Would we then have our national security pants down or would we don a new set of clothes? I have addressed this topic in my recently published book Transition To Peace: A Defense Engineer's Search For An Alternative To War
What is certain is that we need to search for new economic answers in the uncharted waters of the future. Perhaps someday Jerry will be able to write The Localization Papers, Widely Shared Benefits of a New Economy.

Brilliant! THE message for our times

This book tells it like it is - from every angle imaginable -- why capitalism is destroying the environment, our communities, our well-being, and our very humanity. The author, Mander, writes about complex issues in a conversational style with honesty and directness. Some of this stuff everyone already knows in a vague, unsettling sort of way, but this book provides data and examples that show exactly why and how the one percent got to be where they are why there is no way to stop them, short of dismantling the whole destructive system known as "capitalism." Basically, it's not about the "one percent" themselves - it's about THE SYSTEM. The book does a great job explaining how this all works.

It also presents entirely novel perspectives, such as using the macroeconomic concept of "comparative advantage" to explain why the U.S. must continually manufacture and sell arms - and why we will always be at war. In fact, a whole chapter is devoted to the connection between capitalism and militarism, which is a huge connection that is rarely discussed.

Overall, the author's viewpoint emerges from an environmental perspective - we cannot continue to plunder the finite resources of our planet in order to meet the fairy-tale needs of an ever-expanding economy. It's a no-brainer, and yet it is THE message of our era, and long overdue.

Book ties together other notable books

When I started reading this book, I realized I was starting to finally understand the big picture known as Capitalism. Reading "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" by John Perkins, I was stunned to find out what the U.S. was doing to other countries, "Web of Debt" by Ellen Hodgson Brown discusses the Federal Reserve and our money system and lastly "Tar Sands" by Andrew Nikiforuk describes the destruction of our planet's natural resources to keep oil for the U.S. plentiful. These are just three of many fine books that discuss in depth parts of the overall problem which is Capitalism. This particular book brings it all together in a very readable, easily understood way. We all know at the core that what's happening is unsustainable and this book explains why.

Not a good resource for professional and business development

2.5 Stars. Started out pretty strong but then about 30-40% through it felt like the author couldn't figure out how to keep this book going and continue to relate it to Heavy Metal. It turned into more of the author's opinion on which bands are good and which ones aren't. Which I didn't even agree with a lot of the time.

There is some interesting heavy metal history scattered throughout but I was looking for a professional development book. Not just a book on music history. I would say that if its the metal part of this that is interesting to you, don't read this. Pick up a book that is solely about music history from the 70s.

For the most part I just felt like the author didn't know how to carry this concept through to the end of the book and more often than not the connections were thread-bare. If you want a pro-development book try the classics because the "new age" pro development books leave a lot to be desired and don't really relate to business all that much.

This book contains an extensive collection of critical reviews, from leading researchers in the field of regulated protein degradation. It covers the role of regulated proteolysis in a range of microorganisms (from Gram positive, Gram negative and pathogenic bacteria to Archaea and the Baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae).

 

 

For many years, intracellular protein degradation was almost exclusively thought of as a non-selective mechanism to recycle amino acids and remove trash from the cell. The contemporary view however, is that protein degradation is a highly selective process that plays a key role in a number of important cellular processes. Not only does it contribute to the maintenance of protein homeostasis (proteostasis) through the direct recognition and removal of damaged proteins, but it also regulates the cells response to a variety of environmental stress signals. Regulatory proteolysis also plays an important role in virulence of pathogenic bacteria, and “fitness” of eukaryotic organelles. This book focuses on the central players in these diverse cellular processes – the AAA+ proteases – and examines how these machines achieve their exquisite specificity. It also highlights the various mechanisms microorganisms use to post-translationally modify their proteins, as a means to regulate protein levels and hence cell physiology.

 

 

 

Regulated proteolysis in microorganisms is a must read for researchers working on protein homeostasis, stress response pathways and virulence. It provides a detailed overview of the components and signals that contribute to the metabolic stability of a protein in various microorganisms. Steven L. Jones, PhD
Steve holds a BA in Greek and Latin from Baylor
University, an MA in Greek, Latin, and Classical
Studies from Bryn Mawr College, and a PhD
in Classics from the University of Texas at Austin.
Steve has held previous faculty appointments at
Trinity University, the University of Texas at Austin,
and Baylor University. Currently, he teaches Medical
Terminology at Rice University in Houston, TX.
He is also Assistant Professor of Classics at Houston
Baptist University, where he serves as chair of the
Department of Classics and Biblical Languages
and as director of the Master of Arts in Biblical
Languages Program. He teaches courses on Latin,
Greek, Classical Civilization, Early Christianity,
and the Classical Roots of Medical Language.
When not breaking down medical words,
Steve enjoys taking road trips with his wife and
four daughters, watching baseball, eating tacos,
drinking ice-cold Dr Pepper, and showing off his

Great price great book would recommend again

This has to be the best book I think I'd rather have a long time. It can break down the components of the psychological issues Stigma, myths, and the basic knowledge of schizophrenia and how it affects Those that live with this tormenting disease. I am finishing up my undergraduate degree in psychology but I will say even those that have little knowledge psychological disorders and I understand this book.

Some Valuable Insights

What I liked about this book is that it discussed the importance for people who have recovered from schizophrenia to have valued activities and goals such as work in their lives. This quality of life issue is one that is far too often ignored by mental health professionals. They often feel that once they have stabilized the individual and controlled the psychotic symptoms, their job is done. But there is more to be done as these authors suggest in chapter nine.

Work can be an important activity for those in recovery but they often don't participate in meaningful work because of numerous barriers that the the authors discuss. Some of these barriers are lack of confidence on the part of the individual but lack of support from others, ignorance and legislation are other reasons. This is an important area and I was pleased to see it dealt with in this book.

Two other areas that I was pleased to see discussed were the role of the family and cognitive behavioral training (CBT). As with any illness, the ill person does require considerable support from family (and friends). The role that the family can play in recovery is discussed in Chapter ten. The impact that this illness has on the family and the reaction from friends is very well dramatized in the DVD Cutting For Stone Chapter seven is devoted to a discussion of CBT. This is a strategy that has been shown to be of value and that makes a good addition to the medication which isn't always 100% effective in dealing with the voices.

Selected Passages From A Classic In A Poor Package

If you are looking for some selected passages pasted together by theme you might enjoy this book, otherwise avoid it.
Among the faults of this book, and there are plenty, the most glaring are:
1) LACK OF A REAL INDEX. The cities are indexed in alphabetical order, but not the men!!!! The units are not indexed, nor is anything else. Are you really going to find men who served in a battle or specific regiment by finding a small town in Texas? A Detailed Map Would Have Been NICE, but wouldn't an index of the names, places, events, etc. have been better?
2) The quotes from the men have been shortened and/or deleted. The original work by Miss Yeary had sometimes long, but interesting stories. This booklet has a few stories, but mostly selected one or two sentence quotes. The men who served with the veteran and the battles and specific units are for the most part no place to be found.
3) The Civil War was a large and costly conflict, but ONLY THREE BOOKS WERE USED AS REFERENCES. In other words, there isn't much depth.
FAMILY HISTORIANS SHOULD AVOID THIS BOOK because it will make those researching their family, ancestor, unit, battle, etc. very angry.
CHILDREN OR THOSE WHO WANT AN EXTREMELY LIGHT UNDERSTANDING OF A COMPLEX & DETAILED STRUGGLE MIGHT LIKE THIS POORLY CONSTRUCTED BOOK.
THIS IS NOT FOR SCHOLARS!

Read the words of the Texas Confederate Soldiers who lived to tell their stories

This first hand account of Confederate heroes, mostly from Texas, is heart breaking. It makes so real the courage, the bravery, of Confederates fighting for their homes and their rights against overwhelming odds..The yankees, on the other hand, were just fighting for their pay.
In the words of the Confederate soldiers, we learn of the hardships and the extreme dedication that guided these men.
I recommend this book anyone who wants to know the bravery in the heart of the Southern Soldier, and to know how great was the suffering.
The horrors of war are clearly described here. The WBTS was the greatest tragedy we have ever had and that is why the fascination of the War continues.
These accounts are from a condensed version of Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray, 1861-1865, complied in 1912 by Miss Mamie Yeary of McGregor, TX, member of the Pearl Witt Chapter 569 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Fascinating blend of genres and ideas

First off, this isn't a typical Amazon title, rather it is the product of PS Publishing, which puts out limited, signed editions by various science fiction and fantasy authors. Specifically, "The Human Front" was limited to 400 hardcover and another 500 paperback copies, all of which have long since sold out from the publisher. That said, there are copies available on the internet, and fans of alternate history will definitely want to track this one down.
As I alluded to above, "The Human Front" is Ken MacLeod's take on alternate history, but anyone who knows MacLeod knows it will be anything but conventional. Actually, it does start off conventionally enough: it's the early 1960's and World War III has been raging with varying degrees of ferocity since 1949. Joe Stalin is a romanticized guerrilla fighter in the model of Che, and the Soviet Union has been beaten down to the point where the allies have installed a government in Petrograd.
Macleod rather cleverly juxtaposes roles in this world; in addition to Stalin, JFK is reviled as a butcher ("Hey, Hey, JFK, how many kids have you killed today?"). By so doing, he obliterates the myths of the past, and rather shrewdly, points out that historical interpretation is largely a function of the circumstances in which one lives, or more simply, a result of how the past turned out. While he is no apologist for Stalin (by any stretch) he creates a plausible reality where he is revered as a pragmatic, dedicated revolutionary, rather than reviled as a butcher. Thus removed from our known context he can create an absurd inversion that nonetheless sheds light on how we view our own heroes.
However, instead of following this believable alternate reality to a logical conclusion, MacLeod throws a curveball in the main character, John Matheson's, enigmatic encounter with one of the U.S.'s strange disc shaped bombers. Although the next twenty pages of narrative are fairly conventional, MacLeod has set the stage, and everything thereafter is tainted by this puzzling mystery.
To go any further would spoil the plot, but suffice it to say that the novel takes numerous bizarre twists before arriving at a fascinating ending. Specifically, unlike most Alternate History, which revels in an outcome discrete from reality, MacLeod attempts to reconcile his world to our own in a manner reminiscent of Philip K. Dick's "The Man in the High Castle". The mechanism of this reconciliation is completely original without being outlandish, and the statement made is simple but profound. In essence, MacLeod is arguing that we are all victims of circumstance, that, generally speaking, shaping the world's destiny is beyond the individual. Thus, it is left to each of us to live as best we can, in the hopes that the cumulative result is something better than where we started. At the same time, unlike much Alternate History, (and particularly what one would expect from such a politically conscious writer) MacLeod isn't entirely displeased with the path history has taken, and actually seems to find it better than many of the alternatives.
MacLeod packs more into the seventy-five pages of "The Human Front" than most authors do in novels four times as long. He has blended so many genres, I've lost count, and it's almost unfair to categorize it as Alternate History, in spite of the fact that it won the Sidewise Award for best Short Form Alternate History in 2001. Rather, MacLeod created a true SF hybrid, that evokes the best of many different themes. At the same time, he has written a character driven novel that explores some interesting themes around meaning and purpose. Ultimately, this is a work of literature in which the content far surpasses what one might expect from the length.

alternate history and more

I like Ken Macleod's writing because it's political. I don't always agree with the politics - Ken is some sort of weird Troskyist / Libertarian hybrid that I still haven't managed to really understand - but it's always fun to see him poke at political topics (this is the same reason that China Mieville is one of my favorite authors. Well, that and he can WRITE).

Anyway, the Human Front is a good little novella. It starts in an alternate history where the US made contact with the LGM in flying saucers sometime in the 1940s, and the events have unfolded very differently given that hard-line anti-communists now have nearly unkillable assault aircraft.

In the same way that libertarian fiction always ends up with the Good Old American Boys shooting at the Red Coats / UN / New World Order, as best I can tell Trot fiction always ends up with either (a) a cabal in a Scottish pub planning the worker's uprising, and / or (b) the workers having their uprising.

THF is not different - you get exactly what you signed up for.

...but then stuff gets weird. The ending is the part that I liked best, but sadly I can't go into detail without giving away the conclusion. I wish that the ending had stretched out a bit longer. It reminded me of Spider Robinson's early stuff in that way - we spend a whole lot of time not understanding what's going on, and then the moment of resolution - the really good part - goes by in a flash.

Anyway, even with the pay off a bit shorter than I'd like, 4 stars. Read it.

Five Star novella at a premium price

Gardner Dozois thought enough of this novella to give it the coveted placement as the last entry in the 19th edition of his Year's Best series. I certainly enjoyed it and found it worth re-reading several times. Quite possibly the best novella of 2001. MacLeod was able to create an engrossing story complete with credible characters, dialog, and world politics, along with an incredible twist or two.

As of 2013, the "chapbook" prices seem appropriate for the moderately serious collector. Anyone else might first try to find a copy of the Dozois collection. Of course, that will not include the essays.

[Note: I do NOT own The Human Front in this format. I hope someone will comment if the version for sale here is an expanded version compared to the one available in Year's Best. That one ran about 40 pages in trade paperback format. I didn't see any differences in the 10 pages or so of the excerpt that I could view here. (which seemed to each contain about half as many words as a trade paperback page.)]

The title has an exploitative ring that perfectly suits the material. The basic premise--that talent is not enough--is sound and the execution is thorough. However, the odds against a successful career in Hollywood films are so unfavorable that only those crazed with ambition are likely to "make it," and they are not likely to need a guide such as this. Sections entitled "Dropping by Peoples' Offices Uninvited," "How To Get Through to People on the Phone," and "Shmoozing with the Stars" inadvertently border on satire. The rest of the information found here can be pieced together from newspaper gossip columns. This book should be perused at the bookstore and kept away from the extremely gullible. Not recommended.

For director Patrick Read Johnson, the road to success in Hollywood started in Wadsworth, Illinois (pop. 750), and ended on Mars.
At the age of ten, young Patrick set his train set on fire and filmed the spectacle with his dad's movie camera. By the time Patrick was thirteen, his mom was so sick of driving to Chicago to buy movie magazines for him and hearing him complain that he hadn't yet been discovered by Hollywood that she picked up one of the magazines herself--it turned out to be American Cinematographer--and called a name off the masthead: Herb Lightman, editor.
A determined Mom got through to Herb in Los Angeles. "Listen, Herb, I've got a kid here who's been making 8-millimeter films since he was ten. He's thirteen now. He wants to be Stanley Kubrick. I don't know anybody. I don't know what I should do with him. Should I send him to film school? If I put him on a plane and get him a place to stay with friends in L.A. for a week, will you introduce him to some of his heroes?"
Luckily for Mom and Patrick, Herb turned out to be one of the Hollywood good guys. He chuckled. Who knows, maybe Mom reminded him of his own mother's exasperation with a youngster obsessed with films and filmmaking. He agreed to Mom's proposition and a week later Patrick was on a plane to Hollywood, explaining to the astonished guy in the next seat that he was going to visit a special effects wizard named Douglas Trumbull.
Not only did Patrick meet Doug Trumbull, but Herb let him tag along as he visited the set of a new movie Doug was working on, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, where an ordinary-looking guy in a trucker's cap who asked him if he wanted a Coke turned out to be the director Steven Spielberg. Patrick's last day in Hollywood was spent watching the rough cut of a film called Star Wars that everyone thought was going to be a nice, small, kids' movie.
After that introduction to the business, it's no wonder that young Patrick couldn't wait to get back to Hollywood. He finally went back in 1980 and worked in special effects for a few years. He also co-wrote and directed a low-budget film about a group of wayward alien invaders who land on earth Halloween night. Steven Spielberg looked at it and called his buddy Jeffrey Katzenberg at Disney to suggest that they release the picture--which became Spaced Invaders, a Touchstone release. Patrick is now one of the hot directors in town, romanced by studios, producers, and agents. In 1994 he directed the comedy Baby's Day Out, written by John Hughes and starring Joe Mantegna, for Fox. And he's hard at work on his next film, which will be coming soon to a theater near you.
Sometimes Hollywood dreams do come true. Just ask Patrick's mom.

The Hollywood Game
The Hollywood game isn't always this easy, of course. And those of us without a lucky mom for an agent need to learn the rules.
Entertainment is one of America's most successful export industries. While many other U.S. products can no longer compete in the global economy, American entertainment talent and "software" (films, TV programming, music, new media, etc.) are eagerly consumed around the globe. In fact, the Hollywood entertainment industry has become so desirable that major international corporations have invested billions of dollars in Tinseltown.
Unfortunately this doesn't mean that there are plenty of jobs waiting for you in Hollywood, especially during bumpy economic times. The entertainment industry is now more ruthlessly competitive than ever. The world's best and brightest in every job category--performers, directors, executives, technicians--are flooding into Hollywood in ever-increasing numbers.
To succeed in the entertainment industry--even as a hermitlike independent--one must not only have great talent and do outstanding, original work but also understand the Hollywood game and its players. There is an entertainment industry culture that characterizes the show business game as it's played all over our rapidly shrinking planet. With telecommunications and air travel linking the far corners of the globe, the industry is becoming increasingly unified in its rituals, habits, and mores. Industry people in Los Angeles, London, Cannes, and Hong Kong have more in common with each other than with hometown friends in accounting or insurance.
Newcomers--and even many industry veterans--have trouble understanding this arcane system and its unspoken rules. And many people are put off or intimidated by the blatant wheeling and dealing, the ruthless tactics, and the dramatic personalities.
As an introduction, I'll give you a "person from Mars" view of this fascinating industry culture, taking a closer look at the colorful natives, strange behavior patterns, rituals, and language idiosyncrasies that characterize show business and make it different from every other manufacturing industry.
This is the way it is--not necessarily the way it should be. If, once you're established in the industry, you decide to make some changes to the system--more power to you!
In the meantime, my advice to those of you who decide to make show business your life is to learn the game, appreciate the people, and relax and enjoy the craziness. A sense of humor about the whole scene will keep you sane.
But as veteran director Melvin Van Pebbles has observed: "If you're not in the game, you can't win." You don't have to indulge in the more obnoxious customs and practices yourself, but you will need to know how to deal with people who do.

Essential for anyone in the entertainment, or creative, biz

Buzzell's book is like having a personal career counselor at hand 24 hours a day. This is not about headshots or mailrooms or union dues, but about the self-marketing skills necessary to get and keep working in a highly competitive, volatile field -- and keep sane! She homes in on the critical business skills necessary, including positioning yourself, developing a presence and industry image, tested networking techniques for the creative fields, and much more insightful career planning for all areas of the entertianment industry -- above and below line. She also helps you put your goals, triumphs and falls in perspective; a reasonable, attainable strategy to keep working; and honest cautionary tales and motivational techniques. The secret to "making it" is out. But I recommend this book not only to people pursuing Hollywood dreams, but to friends seeking careers in Silicon Valley or any other field where marketing one's self and "soft" skills (e.g., programming, art, design) are critical. Whenever I feel lost in my career, I go back to this book.

Buying & reading this book = a smart career move!!!!

If you only have enough money to buy one book about show-biz careers, this should be the one! Buzzell brings her background as a career counselor to the table, as well as her stints at various film studios. She knows what YOU need to know and she share that knowledge in an accessible way. I would recommend this book to anyone considering ANY job in the entertainment industry. It's not just for actors or other so-called "talents", it's a must-read for technical/crew people as well.

Great Advice for Any Market!

A great book for anyone in the entertainment industry, not just the film industry; covers in depth topics such as how to network and how to handle rejection, and how many attempts one can expect to make before securing a position in the industry. Also great advice on entertainment resume writing; I'm already looking forward to the next edition!
