About the Author

Lorna Goodison is an internationally recognized poet who has published eight books of poetry and two collections of short stories. In 1999 she received the Musgrave Gold Medal from Jamaica, and her work has been widely translated and anthologized in major collections of contemporary poetry. Born in Jamaica, Goodison now teaches at the University of Michigan. She divides her time between Ann Arbor and Toronto.

The Fabulous Harvey Girls

Poet and college professor Lorna Goodison brings a heartwarming story of family life and community in the memoir of her beloved birthplace, Jamaica, in From Harvey River: A Memoir of My Mother and Her Island. Goodison's great-grandfather, Englishman William Harvey, and his brother founded and built the community of Harvey River in 1840. William married Frances Duhaney, despite being told that black women were acceptable as concubines but not as wives. Their son, David, was a self-taught lawyer, who served his village for many years acting as legal counsel. His daughter, Doris, Goodison's mother, was one of the "fabulous Harvey Girls."

The five Harvey sisters benefited from their family name; they were respected in the community and were expected to conduct themselves as ladies at all times. One time Doris was bathing in the river and a young man visiting from another town did not give her the privacy required. Well, that young man was called upon by David Harvey, Doris' father, and her brothers, at his relatives' home, and made to understand that the Harvey girls were held in high esteem. When they went into the main town of Lucea, all the young men turned out to gaze upon and win the charms of the sisters. Their maternal grandfather was an Irishman who later came to live with the family in his later years and one of their grandmothers was a Guinea woman who was said to have mystical powers. Such an illustrious ancestral background made for much family folklore, superstitions and unity.

For awhile after Doris married Marcus Goodison, life was good, but when the author was a young girl in the 1930s, the family's fortunes turned and they were forced to move to Kingston to find work. Being in a big city as Kingston was an adjustment for Doris and her status as a Harvey was of no consequence. She was just another poor, young wife and mother trying to keep food on the table and raise her children. Her strength of character, however, would not allow her to give up. She became sought after for her excellent seamstress skills and she was the community mother and mentor to many children. Her children thrived and Lorna, the author, has wonderful memories of a special summer with her grandmother at Harvey River.

This memoir was rich with tradition and beautiful detail. I could see the women washing clothes in the Harvey River and taste the Lucea yams melting in my mouth. Goodison's poetic writing brought the cadence of the language and mannerisms of the people of Harvey River to life. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy memoirs and especially love reading about different cultures of the Black Diaspora. Rating 4.5

Engaging Memoir

Ms. Goodison manages to do what a great many writers hope to do but seldom achieve - produce work that is illuminating and engaging. This is a beautifully written book filled with rich, authentic descriptions of Jamaican life and offers an often candid view of her family and people. As such, whether you are from the Caribbean or not, I think that readers will be able to relate to the more universal themes of love, loss, triumph and growth and will become personally invested in Ms. Goodison's story.

In addition, Harvey River provides a great historical context in terms of geography and social mores of that country and I learned a great deal. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and intend to share with my friends and family. Well done!

A great read

This book was a great read. If gave me insight to life in Jamacia. Not the The characters were human with all the foibles that go along with being human. You could see all the good, the bad, and the ugly of life, the weather, the living conditions, and the history that makes up island life. I truly enjoyed the pictures enclosed identifying some of the people i nthe book. All in all I would recommend this book to those who enjoy historical reads.

I think the books rates a 4.5.
I know I should have given it 5 stars but I tend to give very few 5 stars.

About the Author

Shuichi Fukuda received his doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tokyo. After working in the Department of Precision Machinery, University of Tokyo, he moved to Welding Research Institute, Osaka University. Later he worked concurrently as Associate Professor at the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo. He became Full Professor of Systems and Management Engineering at Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology (TMIT) and was also Visiting Professor at West Virginia University, Stanford University, Osaka University. Since his retirement from TMIT, he has been working as Consulting Professor as Stanford and Visiting Professor, Cranfield University. Concurrently, He has been concurrently Visiting Professor at the Open University of Japan until 2012. He recently was appointed to Advisor, Systems Design and Management, Keio University in addition to his current positions at Stanford and Cranfield.

This book is about biography of Iranian poet Sa'di, whose work touched all aspect of our society within unlimited time frame. Scholars from China all the way to European have been studying his poems in order to learn how to become a better human.

This book also compares Sa'di work with other Iranian poets like Rumi, Hafiz and so on.

This book encouraged me to read other book on Sa'di; such as, Golstan and Bustan and to learn about my own culture more.

Auf die in Wahrheit existierende Kostenpflichtigkeit wird regelmäßig nur an versteckter Stelle hingewiesen (...) So ist wohl auch der ehemalige Hamburger Bürgermeister Ole von Beust auf der Suche nach einem Kochrezept schon einmal in eine solche Falle geraten. (...)
Für die Betreiber ist das ein lohnendes Geschäft, da viele Betroffene wohl aus Unsicherheit oder Unwissenheit die geforderten Beträge letztlich bezahlen. (...) Einige der Akteure haben es mittlerweile zu einer gewissen Berühmtheit gebracht. So werden die Brüder Andreas und Manuel Schmidtlein als Pioniere der „Geschäftsidee Abofalle" betrachtet. (...) Auch der sogenannte Frankfurter Kreisel hat einige Bekanntheit erlangt. Seit einigen Jahren werden dort von einigen wenigen Beteiligten zig solcher Websites betrieben. (...) This book will consider this important aspect of follow-up for millions of cancer survivors because of the strong reliance on symptom reporting for clinical decision making.   In order for us to generate meaningful and effective treatment, we need to better understand the symptom experience in cancer survivors. This book provides much information that will assist us to better understand and manage this complicated end point. The presenting problems need to be articulated and “conceptualized” as clearly as possible by both parties so appropriate actions can be taken. Since health care costs are a major concern for patients, payers, and providers, this area will also be addressed in all the relevant sections.
In taking an interdisciplinary perspective, this book illustrates the importance of a team approach to the improvement of health care and associated health, well-being, and functioning in cancer survivors. The 17 chapters cover critical topics of which physicians and providers of all types must be aware in order to provide the most comprehensive and responsive care for cancer survivors. All of the clinical care chapters include case studies to illustrate the real-world application of these approaches in cancer survivors. Information about sources of referral both within and outside the traditional health care communities will be provided in tabular form. Michael Feuerstein, Ph.D., MPH is Professor of Public Health in the Departments of Medical and Clinical Psychology and Preventive Medicine and Biometrics, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland. He is also Director of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at that institution. In addition, he is Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Behavioral Medicine, at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, DC. Dr. Feuerstein is editor-in-chief of Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation and Journal of Cancer Survivorship, as well as editor of Handbook of Cancer Survivorship (2007) and Cancer Survivors and Work (2009). He is a Fellow of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, the American Psychological Association, and the Society of Behavioral Medicine, and a Member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, the Association for Advancement of Behavioral Therapy, the International Association for the Study of Pain, and the New York Academy of Sciences. Patricia Ganz, M.D. is Professor of Health Services in the School of Public Health, Professor of Medicine in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Vice Chair of the Department of Health Services. She teaches health care practices and variations and ethical issues in public health. She is also the Director of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control Research of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at UCLA and leads a large research group that applies the scientific disciplines of public health (epidemiology, health services, behavioral sciences, biostatistics) to research on the prevention, detection, treatment, and supportive care of cancer. In addition, she is associate editor of Journal of Clinical Oncology and Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and is a member of the editorial board of the Cochrane Breast Cancer Group. In 1999 she was named an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professor and in 2007 she became a member of the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Ganz has devoted the past 25 years to the study of quality-of-life outcomes in cancer and other chronic diseases.

well-written introduction for the popular market

This book is in a series of "Makers of the Muslim World" which Patricia Crone is overseeing. I know of Stephen Humphreys from his translation of Tabari over the years 644-655 (but of course I can't review that book here). I'll just say he's to be trusted on Uthman. Here he's writing about Uthman's cousin Muawiya. How does he do?

Muawiya is a controversial figure, as Humphreys points out; his ACTIONS are well-known from the Hadith and also from non-Muslim witness, but no-one has much of a handle on what Muawiya *thought*. Humphreys sees the amir as a warlord whose main aim was to maintain order in the new Islamic empire. Muawiya used Islam as a tool to that end. His chief virtue was "hilm", the real antonym to "jahl"; where the Arab virtue was in raids and physical courage, Muawiya's virtue was in calmly working the political levers so he didn't HAVE to fight.

...Except against the Byzantines. But if he'd brought low the Romans, the Arabs might not have to fight a real opponent again, ever.

So anyway. I didn't see much here to quibble with, beyond this or that year of this or that Roman raid which could be moved in this or that direction. Humphreys does omit, or is more likely unaware of, some primary source material - namely Dashkurantsi's history of the Caucasian Albanians. But none of it much affects the main thrust of this book.

Other than that, it's a quick and breezy read, and as informative as any biography of this close-lipped figure can be. I recommend it for any students of the period wanting a scholarly-consensus introduction to this amir. I'd also recommend it to Muslims, if they're moderate enough not to see the amir as infallible or hopelessly evil.
