About the Author
Professor Wiener received his Ph.D. from the University of Houston and his Masters Degree in Legal Studies at UNL. He was professor of Psychology at Saint Louis University (1982- 2000) and most recently chair of the Department of Psychology at Baruch College, City University of New York. In 2002 Dr. Wiener joined the Law-Psychology Program (as director) and the Social Psychology Program at UNL. He is the former editor of Law and Human Behavior, the official journal of the American Psychology/Law Society (Division 41 of the APA). Dr. Wiener's research applies theories of social cognition to problems in legal decision-making. Among the topic areas he has investigated are perceptions of sexual harassment and jury decision making. Specifically, Dr. Wiener studies the role of generic prejudice in criminal cases and he studies how jurors reach capital murder decisions in assigning penalties. The National Science Foundation has funded and continues to fund this work. Currently, Dr. Wiener applies social cognitive theories of emotion, motivation, dual process of cognitive processing to explain how legal actors reach decisions relevant to law and policy. Other topics of investigation include the role of implicit attitude activation in generic prejudice, the role of emotions in jury judgments as they develop across the presentation of criminal cases, the role of mortality salience in death penalty judgments, and the role of counterfactual thinking in negligence judgments. Dr. Wiener teaches courses at UNL on behavioral sciences and the law and legal decision making.

He is the author of over 125 technical articles. Great book - but here's an update!

This is easily the best Kaua'i hiking book - buy it if you intend to do any hiking on Kaua'i. A small nit, the information on the Alaka'i Swamp Trail is out of date. This trail is now boardwalk right through to it's end at the Kilohana lookout (an amazing feat of engineering!). Far from being the endless slog through inhospitable "telephone pole bogs", this hike is now a snap, rewarded by an awesome view of the whole NE quadrant of the island from the edge of the Wainiha Pali (weather permitting!).

Too bad this is the authoritative volume on Kauai trails

A trail guide should do two things:

1. Accurately describe, in detail, trails, access, condition, etc.

2. Inspire the reader to hike said trails

Kauai Trails: Walks, Strolls, and Treks on the Garden Island is mediocre when it comes to the first, and horrible when it comes to the second.

The author seems to do her best to convince a hiker planning a trip to Kauai that (s)he should visit California instead. She rails on about garbage, introduced species, erosion, hippies, etc throughout the entire books. Let's keep it to one chapter, Kathy!

Worst of all, she bashes the Kalalau Trail, discouraging any Kauai visitor from hiking it. Nevermind that it's ranked one of the best hikes on the planet. Nevermind that on every internet hiking forum, trip reports are invariably glowing. Nevermind that many people who live on Kauai or visit Kauai regularly think it's a DON'T MISS hike. Kathy says, "It's overrated. Don't bother."

I'm sad that we don't have a guide to hiking the Garden Isle that's more positive and informative, better organized, with better maps...one that actually makes you think you'll have an enjoyable time hiking in paradise.

Purchase this book only because it's the best one there is, not because it's good. I personally recommend The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook. While it doesn't go into as much detail on the trails, it's far more informative, positive, and better updated. Kathy's book lists many trails as CLOSED which aren't closer, or may be damaged but are still hikable.

good information but not well organized

Has good detailed hiking information, but not well organized. Book is essentially a list of trails. Trails in same area tend to be grouped, but there is no real breakdown by area to give a better idea of choices and how hike routes could be put together by combining connecting trails or to help choose hikes by by area. The information is there, but you have to work to sort through it and make your actual plan. Improves upon a key flaw of Robert Smith book(s) which is poor directions to finding hike starting points (except where does things like tells you to refer to #92, and #92 then refers to #85), but would recommend it more as a supplement than a substitute.

About the Author
Hyeong Soo Chang (SM’07 of the IEEE, Member of INFORMS) received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering, all from Purdue University,West Lafayette, IN, in 1994, 1996, and 2001, respectively. Since 2003, he has been with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Sogang University, Seoul, Korea, where he is now an Associate Professor. He has about 30 journal papers in the area of MDPs and related areas. His main research interests include Markov decision processes, Markov games, computational learning theory, computational intelligence, and stochastic optimization.  He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control.
Jiaqiao Hu (M’11 of the IEEE, Member of INFORMS) received the B.S. degree in automation from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China, in 1997, the M.S. degree in applied mathematics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, in 2001, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2006. Since 2006, he has been with the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, State University of New York, Stony Brook, where he is currently an Assistant Professor Markov decision processes, simulation-based optimization, global optimization, applied probability, and stochastic modeling and analysis.
Michael Fu (Fellow of the IEEE, Member of INFORMS) received his Ph.D. and M.S degrees in applied mathematics from Harvard University in 1989 and 1986, respectively. He received S.B. and S.M. degrees in electrical engineering and an S.B. degree in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1985. Since 1989, he has been at the University of Maryland, College Park, in the College of Business and Management.  He was the Simulation Area Editor for Operations and is an Associate Editor for Management Science, and has served on the Editorial Boards of the INFORMS Journal on Computing, Production and Operations Management and IIE Transactions. He was on the program committee for the Spring 1996 INFORMS National Meeting, in charge of contributed papers. In 1995, he received the Maryland Business School's annual Allen J. Krowe Award for Teaching Excellence. He is the co-author (with Jian-Qiang Hu) of the book, Conditional Monte Carlo: Gradient Estimation and Optimization Applications (0-7923-9873-4, 1997), which received the 1998 INFORMS College on Simulation Outstanding Publication Award. Other awards include the 1999 IIE Operations Research Division Award and a 1998 IIE Transactions Best Paper Award. In 2002, he received ISR's Outstanding Systems Engineering Faculty Award. He currently serves as a director of National Science Foundation Operations Research Program. Dr. Fu's research interests lie in the areas of stochastic derivative estimation and simulation optimization of discrete-event systems, particularly with applications towards manufacturing systems, inventory control, and the pricing of financial derivatives.
Steven I. Marcus (Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of SIAM, Member of INFORMS) received his Ph.D. and S.M. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975 and 1972, respectively. He received a B.A. from Rice University in 1971. From 1975 to 1991, he was with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was the L.B. (Preach) Meaders Professor in Engineering. He was Associate Chairman of the Department during the period 1984-89. In 1991, he joined the University of Maryland, College Park, where he was Director of the Institute for Systems Research until 1996. He is currently a Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department and the Institute for Systems Research. He has served as an Editor of the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, and Associate Editor of Mathematics of Control, Signals, and Systems, Journal on Discrete Event Dynamic Systems, and Acta Applicandae Mathematicae. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 articles, conference proceedings, and book chapters. Dr. Marcus's research interests lie in the areas of control and systems engineering, analysis and control of stochastic systems, Markov decision processes, stochastic and adaptive control, learning, fault detection, and discrete event systems, with applications in manufacturing, acoustics, and communication networks.

About the Author
Philippe Lacomme is a Senior Radar Designer with Thomson-CSF Detexis Company. He is the Technical Director of the Radar Unit, which is in charge of developing and producing airborne radar systems for Rafale aircraft, the Mirage 2000, and others. Professor Lacomme has taught radar theory at Thomson-CSF and in many universities and schools, and has lectured at numerous international conferences.

Jean-Claude Marchais was Technical Director of Thomson-CSF Radars & Contre-Mesures until his retirement. During his long career, he was involved in the development of radar systems for the Mirage aircraft family, a lecturer on radar at the ESME-Sudria engineering school, and the author of three books, including a highly successful one on operational amplifiers.

Jean-Philippe Hardange joined Thomson-CSF in 1982 and has worked there as a radar engineer on all types of airborne radar. In 1996 he was head of the Airborne Radar Engineering Department. Later he launched the SOSTAR project of ground surveillance for NATO. He is now leading the Airborne Systems Engineering Department at Thomson-CSF.

Eric Normant works as a research scientist at at Thomson-CSF Detexis and is head of the airborne reconnaissance radar team. He has worked on SAR processing and system engineering. He holds a dozen patents in the field of SAR and teaches general radar theory and SAR.

The comparisons include Jean Rotrou’s The True Saint Genesius with Jean-Paul Sartre’s Kean and Jean Genet’s The Blacks; Pierre Corneille’s L’Illusion comique with Tony Kushner’s The Illusion; Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s The Impresario with Luigi Pirandello’s theater-in-theater trilogy; Shakespeare’s Hamlet with Pirandello’s Henry IV and Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead; Molière’s Impromptu de Versailles with “impromptus” by Jean Cocteau, Jean Giraudoux, and Eugène Ionesco. Metatheater and Modernity also examines the role of technology in the creating and breaking of illusions in both centuries. In contrast to previous work on metatheater, it emphasizes the metatheatrical role of comedy. Metatheater, the author concludes, is both performance and performative: it accomplishes a perceptual transformation in its audience both by defending theater and exposing the illusory quality of the world outside.

Si Robertson

Si Robertson, one of the stars of A&E’s Duck Dynasty, has worked and hunted for Duck Commander since retiring from the United States Army in 1993. Before he became America’s favorite uncle through his appearances on Duck Dynasty, Si spent his time making all the reeds for the Duck Commander calls and working with Phil to prepare for the next duck season. Now he spends most of his time filming and traveling around the country doing events. But no matter how busy his life gets, he always makes time to sit in the blind with his buddies and hunt. Si lives in West Monroe, Louisiana, with his wife Christine. They have two grown children, Trassa and Scott, and eight grandsons.

More than just Uncle Si, Jack!

I bought this book after reading a pre-release interview with Mr. Robertson. I knew that crazy Uncle Si was most likely an exaggerated character and was curious to find out about the Si behind the beard- so-to-speak.

Mr. Robertson's book was a real treat and reminded me of the late nights I spent growing up listening to my uncles (who were raised in similar circumstances) swapping stories. The stories of his childhood and adolescence were funny and endearing. The interjections of interesting facts and bad jokes woven into the stories only added the the entertainment factor. I particularly loved his stories about Vietnam. Despite the fact that it was obviously a difficult time in his life, Mr. Robertson's positive and cheerfully silly narrative was refreshing and inspiring. He doesn't pretend the war was sunshine and rainbows but he shares the interesting things that he experienced and is honest about his flaws without being depressingly down. My favorite part of the book, though, was when he wrote about his wife and his children and his faith. The warmth and tenderness of his love for his family is heartwarming. Far from the lazy, selfish, crazy Uncle Si character, Mr. Robertson thoroughly proves himself to be a hard-working, intelligent, and all-round grade A guy. His book is absolutely enjoyable from cover to cover and I'm a happier person for having read it.

This is an amazing and inspirational book. Si adds his funny twist to make this a book for all ages. His faith in God and love of family is amazing.
