Excellent review of classic mass building progams

Muscle and Fitness has come through with another book in their 101 series. This one is an excellent review of classic mass building programs which experienced lifters and readers will recognize. The book is, like all the 101 books well designed, well laid out, with lots of motivational photos of successful muscle men. The workouts are well laid out, mostly in month long sections. The directions for the exercises are easily followed. If month long snapshots of classic programs is what you are looking for, here it is, well done.

The book starts with a good review of barbell workouts. Several old classics and some newer variations make this an interesting chapter. Then we get a large program of large numbers of both sets and reps for mass building. Chapter three is the old favorite pyramids revisited. Chapter 5 leads us into unilateral training, a good variation for balancing programs. Chapter 6 is some chain techniques. Chapter 7 is explosive power training. Chapter 8 is German Volume Training. Chapter 9 is Weider's 5/3/1 Program. Chapter 10 is a program with massive volume to get you through sticking points. Chapter 11 wants to increase your testosterone levels for igniting muscle growth. Chapter 12 is an upper body blast. Chapter 13 is a lower body triphasic strategy approach. Chapter 14 is eating enough protein to gain muscle mass.

There is an excellent basic exercise index organized by body part. The exercises are well described, mostly pictured, and well selected.

And finally we get a good sized list of foods, sorted by type, with their calories, protein, carb and fat contents listed.

Who is the audience this book is intended for? Obviously not the old timer who already owns the original books on all these topics and has worked through the workouts. But there is a huge number of young men and young women who need and are looking for just this collection of information and data on exercise, mass building and diet, defining terms they have heard of and wonder about. For them this an excellent book.

NOT FOR THE HOME GYM

The book opens with: "In the history of physical training, I don't think there has ever been anything that has improved upon the adjustable barbell." (pg8) GREAT! I AGREE! I have a well stocked home gym and a book full of new workouts is just what I had in mind when I bought this book. The book then proceeds to use every machine you would find in a gym. Not for someone like me at all. I will say the Recovery & Food sections are good and, if I ever decide (doubtful) that I would enter a gym, I would sure bring this book along. Otherwise a shame. I was looking forward to new info & workouts.

Not enough instruction or structure

This book just wasn't what I had in mind. I had just finished going through Men's Health: The Book of Muscle : The World's Most Authoritative Guide to Building Your Body, which comes with very detailed programs which tell you exactly what to do each day of the week for the course of three different six-month-long periods. I liked having that kind of structure. This book is very flashy, with bright color photographs, and cool-sounding names for their different workouts, but it is not really useful as a day-to-day guide.
