Nightlife, by Matthew Quinn Martin

For centuries an ancient evil has slept beneath the streets of New Harbor. This Halloween, it wakes up.

An action-packed debut horror novel from talented new writer Matthew Quinn Martin, Nightlife pits a feisty bartender and a mysterious loner against bloodthirsty terrors as alluring as they are deadly.

Nightclub bartender and serial heartbreaker Beth Becker might be a cynic. But when her best friend goes missing Halloween night, Beth knows it’s up to her to find out what happened.

Her quest will take her on an odyssey through the crumbling city of New Harbor, Connecticut. Along the way she meets a homeless prophet warning of something he calls the “Night Angel”—a bloodthirsty creature that feeds on the forgotten. And she will form an unlikely bond with a hunted stranger who knows all too well what stalks the streets at night.

The strange man tells Beth the hideous truth about the nightmare creatures that have haunted mankind’s imagination for eons—creatures the world calls vampires. Together they are the only hope for New Harbor, but to defeat what lurks in the shadows they’ll have to conquer something far stronger than fear—their own desires.

A Vampire Novel With Real Teeth.
By Michael B
In Nightlife, the first installment of what will hopefully be a very long series, Matthew Quinn Martin hits the reset button to give the vampire genre a much-needed overhaul.

It seems counter intuitive to write this, but what makes Nightlife stand out immediately is that Martin's vampires are actually frightening. Imagine being afraid of vampires (instead of annoyed by them or attracted to them). It's hard to say more about this without giving too much away, but Martin's reinvention of this well-worn trope recasts vampires as actual monsters while creating a history so sinister it is almost Lovecraftian.

Monsters alone do not a horror novel make, but luckily Nightlife has more in store for readers than these gruesome villains. Beth Becker, a street-smart, no-nonsense bartender in New Harbor, Connecticut, becomes an amateur sleuth as friends in her town begin to disappear. Investigating the disappearances, she finds her path crossing with a grizzled stranger, a vagrant prophet, New Harbor's secret society, hordes of drunken party-goes, and a phalanx of indifferent cops -all of whom she will need to out fight or outwit if she hopes to see her friends again.

At times the characters strayed near cliches, and the dialogue was a bit stilted, but only in an enjoyable B-movie way. Set around Halloween, balanced a great combination of suspense and humor (shout out to the M.F.in' Wolfman), carried quickly along by Martin's workman-like prose, Nightlife kept me reading and furiously swiping my screen to see what would happen next.

The only letdown was the ending -I couldn't immediately click a link to buy the sequel. I can't wait to read the next installment.

Extremely entertaining!

"Nightlife" grabs you immediately and sucks you into its world. Quickly addicting. The chapters move swiftly as you land back and forth in the shoes of each and every one of the characters.
Frightening, clever, and fun! A great balance of horror, suspense, emotion, and even humor. Looking forward to the sequel!

Excellent spooky thrills
By Kristina
Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy

With Halloween coming I decided to read NIGHTLIFE since based on its description it seemed like just the right scary suspenseful story to read in October on a dark rainy night. I was not disappointed and was met with an incredibly riveting, edge of your seat plot that was equal parts spooky mystery and gruesomely tragic horror novel. Horror works well when there are slow, quiet moments yet there is an underlining panic for what unknown evil is coming. NIGHTLIFE does this type of suspense very well as the beginning of the story takes its time setting up the world then the creepiness slowly seeps and then it hits you with the full extent of its horror. The monsters are what really makes this a truly great horror story.

The vampire like creatures in NIGHTLIFE are less suave and sexy and more primal, inhuman parasites who use their powers to ensnare their prey in devious ways. They seemed like a combination of vampires from different cultures and it was nice to have the characters acknowledge those myths as well as the movie vampires in their discussions on what the characters were dealing with.

Jack Jackson has dedicated his life to vampire hunting and while I’ve seen this solitary male fighting against an impossible threat many times I liked him. He’s funny, has some great ideas for how to kill the vampires, and came off like an all around decent guy who I would want to have with me during a vampire attack. Beth, who ends up embroiled in all of Jack’s monster hunting, took a bit more time to warm up to as I was in the mindset that she was going to be the ‘damsel in distress’ for this horror story. Luckily she wasn’t for the most part and she turns out to be very resourceful and maybe just as kickass as Jack by the end of the book.

NIGHTLIFE is a perfect blend of suspense and creepy horror mixed with a dash of paranormal. With the way this book ended I think there could be plenty of story left for a series and I hope there is.
