Review on the french translation

Putting together God and history is always difficult. I like this book very much for two reasons. 1) The introduction deals with method in history and which place you can give God in historical science. 2) The review of the history of Western civilization(s) is simply great. I don't quite agree with the author's perspective in the introduction, but it is one of the good contributions I have seen on the subject. Studying history of Reformation myself, I found the insights in the book very good and challenging. This book not the ultimate answer to the question God and history, but a good beginning. I'd recommend it to people who study history (whether Christian or not).

An Important contribution

Prof. Wells has written a book that is a must reading for all Christian history teachers at every level of education and for all Christians who aspire to be informed. I note that the work is most beneficial for history teachers because, for the layperson, the historical references to Rousseau, Locke, Newton, and many others moves by very quickly, and it will probably be helpful if one already is familiar with these figures because a lot is not explained.

This is a "no frills" work that brings us to the present historical situation or crisis (the term "crisis" is important to Prof. Wells, and I concur). He shows us that the secular-scientific-humanist world view that is dominant today is, indeed, a new religion that is in opposition to Christianity. The Christian person and the Christian worldview is at a disadvantage in this present historical crisis, but there is hope. Devotion to one's Christian faith can still produce wonderful accomplishments in one's personal activities as well as in the social and political realm. (He gives examples of five great people who have gone forth in the name of Jesus Christ to help a fallen world.) Still, our greatest hope for Prof. Wells is that the "City of Man" was, is, and always will be passing away as the tropism, so to speak, of Western Civilization is always towards "the City of God."

The book is overwhelmingly satisfying, but I have given it four stars instead of five because, insofar as it is aimed to Christian readers as the author states, it could only have been strengthened by quotations from Scripture. Also, the writing might have been more carefully edited in sections. Nonetheless, again, I say to all educated Christians and especially to Christian history teachers: Read this book.

If you are ready for deep thinking

The book is a little dated, but it is still relevant. It is not a casual read unless you are history of philosopy major. He tends to be very supportive of the historical Catholic Church and even criticizes those split instead of trying to purify the church, but he still does do a masterful job in explaining the influences of history and Christian thought on each other.

It may not be a must read for a layman, but it is full of food for thought for the serious thinker.

About the Author

Scott McGillivray is a full-time real estate investor, contractor, television host, writer and educator. Before graduating from the University of Guelph with an honours degree in commerce, McGillivray had already discovered his calling. What began as an ambitious school project about income properties developed into a unique and strategic business model that Scott would later execute himself. Now ten years later, McGillivray has built his own real estate empire with properties across Canada and the United States. McGillivray is a regular columnist for Style at Home magazine and is the host of HGTV’s hit series, Income Property.

Smart Advice!

Good book with a lot of helpful information. He makes it so easy to understand what you need to do. There are three keys to maximizing the value of your home through improvements: make (1) quality renovations that (2) fit with the property's market value and (3) style of home.

The first place I am going to start is with lighting, thanks to his persuasive argument for the impression this gives a buyer of quality! Secondly, I am going to replace my bedroom and entry doors, by making them myself actually, with the help of John Birchard's Doormaking: A Do-It-Yourself Guide.

The bottom line is to do what makes you happy while keeping in mind the possible consequences.

Scott, I love your show and I love your style and the way your properties look after your renos so was very disappointed to receive your book and see the quality of the production. The pictures were mediocre and the recommendations simplistic. You are a star!!! Unfortunately your book does not live up to your work and quality.

About the Author

Dr. Tarjei Kristiansen is Head of Power Market Analysis at SN Power Brazil. Prior to joining SN Power he was a Vice President with JP Morgan in London and responsible for German and Nordic power market analysis. Dr. Kristiansen has also worked for the trading company RBS Sempra Commodities, the utility Statkraft and KEMA Consulting in its markets and regulation team. Dr. Kristiansen holds an MSc in Physics from the University of Oslo and a PhD in Electrical Power Engineering from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He completed the Fellows Program at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. His PhD focused on risk management associated with transmission congestion including financial transmission rights. He frequently publishes papers on European electricity markets, modeling and financial transmission rights in the US. When he is not analysing and modelling electricity markets, he spends time jogging or reading finance. He can be reached at Tarjei_Kristiansen_2003@alumni.ksg.harvard.edu.

Juan Rosellón is tenured Professor at the Department of Economics of the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE) in Mexico City, and Senior Researcher at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW-Berlin). He has been Visiting Professor at the Technische Universität Berlin (2010-2011), the Technische Universität Dresden (2007-2010), and the Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University (2002-2005). Professor Rosellón has published extensively on incentive mechanisms to regulate restructured electricity and natural gas markets, including price-cap methodologies to promote infrastructure investment and addressing strategic behavior by participants with market power. He is member of the Editorial Board of Economics of Energy & Environmental Policy, and is the Editor of Economía Mexicana, Nueva Época. Professor Rosellón has been awarded with a Marie-Curie Fellowship from the European Union (2012), the 4th Reimut Jochimsen Prize by the Deutsche Bundesbank (2009), a Georg Forster Fellowship by the Humboldt Foundation (2008), and a Repsol-YPF-Harvard-Kennedy-School Fellowship (2003). I should have done my research, book covered the period of 1800 to 1899, although the book was interesting I was more interested in reading about true crime in Glasgow for the 1950 on.

Malcolm Archibald takes you deep into the world of Glasgow in the nineteenth century. He takes you to the very bowels of the city and every so often he lightens things up with splashes of humor, courage and the wonderful humanity of the people of Glasgow. Wonderful, informative read!

About the Author
Walid Shoebat was born and raised in Bethlehem, Israel by an Arab father and an American mother. His paternal grandfather was an associate of Haj-Ameen Al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, who was an ally of Adolph Hitler, who conspired with the Nazis during the holocaust. Walid married a Catholic woman, and was challenged to examine the Bible in 1993 and compare it with the Qur'an.

Will the Real Anti-Christ please stand up!

This book is a must read for all people interested in End Times. You really don't even have to be a religious person to appreciate Walid Shoebat's very solid case for his view that the Bible's Anti-Christ is Islam's promised Messiah the Al Mahdi. You don't even have to believe in God to see that his evidence is pretty compelling.

It is extremely detailed and pulls no punches on things. This book by Walid Shoebat is going shake the foundation of what many Bible believers have been told over the last 50 to 100 years. This book is going to help many Christians to better understand what part Islam plays in the End Times. Surely many Christians who have never read about Islam's Messiah the Al Mahdi are going to be shocked out of their comfort zones by the findings in this book because they have been taught for so long to be looking to Europe for the Anti Christ.

This Ex-Islamic Terrorist Walid Shoebat heavily supports his ideas about Islam's awaited Messiah the Al Mahdi being the Bibles Anti-Christ from front to back. He basically says that today's acts of Islamic Terrorism are really practice runs for the return of Islam's promised Messiah the Al Mahdi by today's overly impatient and eager Islamic Terrorists. I have read numerous authors on End Times and Walid puts many of them to shame. I really appreciate his ability to relate what he learned while being a Muslim and his detailed point by point illumination of things like the Madhi's attributes that mirror what the Bible says about the Anti-Christ. Things like his personal explanation for how Muslims react to one of the unpleasant names among the 99 names of Allah are just an example of the insight he brings to his work. He tells colorful stories within the book of his Muslim thinking as a Islamic Terrorist that allows the reader to understand why when he was a Muslim Terrorist he thought he was on the right side or "The Good Guys" as he has puts it until he was challenged to put up or shut up about Islam being the true religion by his wife.

The biggest reason I think his work is so different and more accurate is his middle eastern upbringing and non-Hellenized perspective that allows him to uncover End Times truths that so many in the west have been missing.

Send this to your secular friends because they are going to get their answers from you or some secular book author who tells them the Anti-Christ is a myth or that all religions have the same kind of fables in essence leading them to be scoffers at Gods word.

This will challenge many believers. This kind of truth is powerful for breaking down Myths that secular people and Confused Christians going to many Churches are being fed. Walid's book is a great tool to help wake the Sleeping Church and those outside of faith. It clearly shows that only the uniformed can claim Allah and YHWH the God of the Bible are the same. They are not and Walid's book clearly reveals this and the shocking reality that we are engaged in a battle with the armies of Anti-Christ in 2009.

Second Coming Like the First One

Just like most of the religious community completely missed or misunderstood Jesus' first coming, we are poised for a repeat before the second coming. While most western prophecy teachers will never update their charts and admit they are wrong, Walid comes along and tells the truth. I have long believed that "Popular Prophecy" would totally miss the point of what the Bible actually teaches. If you read this book and are not convinced that we are very close to Armegeddon and that Islam is the anti-christ kingdom, it will probably be because of all the prophecy fluff that has flooded Christian bookstores and misled many. Thanks Walid for your boldness, research and spirit. I can't recommend this book enough!

Simply a masterpiece!

I have studied Bible Prophecy for many years. When I received this book, I simply could not put it down. The logic presented in this book is outstanding and answers many questions that I had after reading a great number of current Prophecy interpretations. This book identifies the Mark of the Beast, the anti-Christ and the false prophet in great detail using the Holy Scriptures as a base. I will continue to question and study, but this book has provided a new perspective on Islam that needs to be broadcast across the planet. This is a "must read" at any price!

Excellent cookbook. Worth every penny.

This book is nothing short of phenomenal.

I needed a book which had only stew, soup and chili recipes so I wouldn’t have to search haphazard for the ones I had on hand in various sources. After reading lots (and lots…) of reviews on Amazon, I decided to buy this book. Wow, am I glad I did. It was worth every penny (approx. $15, which is fairly inexpensive for a quality cookbook such as this).

Upon thumbing through the book when I first received it, I have to say that the vast majority of recipes definitely look extremely delicious (I have a pretty good eye when it comes to sizing up recipes. I have been an avid home cook for about 15 years and have seen, and made, my fair share of bad recipes). None seem too exotic to try nor ‘clunkers’ that were put in the book at the last minute to fill space.

The overwhelming majority of recipes do not rely upon pre-made / processed foods (such as already-made canned soups and sauces, or other processed foods). Are there some recipes that do? Yes – but they are the exception and not the rule. For the remaining recipes, you will definitely need to have your mise en plas ready – not a bad thing (at least for me) since I much prefer to make things from scratch.

Here are some bullet-points on the book’s highlights:
• About half of the recipes have a color photo of the finished product (usually a small inset photo at the top or bottom of the page). I have not done an exact count.

• I have yet to see a recipe call for ingredients that cannot be purchased at a local mega mart (the more exotic ingredients might be feta cheese…maybe chorizo and also faro – but again, I am stretching to consider these ‘exotic.’). Otherwise, we’re dealing with typical products – broth, carrots, onions, flour, chicken, beef, dried herbs, etc., etc. You will likely have 80% of the ingredients on hand for most recipes.

• The majority of recipes are 100% from scratch (very few call for pre-made ingredients). Keep in mind, though, that there is an entire chapter on ‘quick’ recipes which do tend to rely on these. If that’s a problem, then don’t worry – for every recipe that does call for some type of pre-made / processed product, you will likely find 10+ other recipes that do not. Don’t let that be a ‘deal breaker’ for you.

• The book is strictly soups, stews and chili – no chapters here on cocktails, salads, sandwiches, stir-fry, etc. To me this is not a bad thing – after all, I wanted soups, stews and chili and nothing else.

• Each recipe is entirely different. You will not see a recipe that looks suspiciously similar to any others. Some cook books are notorious for simply changing an ingredient, or two, and calling it a ‘new’ recipe. You won’t find any of that here.

• A *minor* complaint I have is the book binding – the book will not stay open so you will have to continually open the book as you make the recipe. My solution for this is to simply photocopy the recipe and just use the sheet rather than the book (I tend to do this with any recipe that I frequently make).

• Extremely detailed index to locate recipes by name or by ingredient or genre.

• There are LOTS of recipes here and varied, too. There’s no doubt you will find dozens of recipes you will enjoy making. You won’t even scratch the surface. There’s even a chapter titled “Spin the Globe” which has recipes from different cultural cuisines. This allows the cook to keep an open mind and explore new ideas instead of making the same old tried and true soups for a change (i.e., chicken noodle, minestrone, beef vegetable, etc).

I have posted a photo of the Red Posole recipe (As I make more recipes I will come back and add photos and give my thoughts). The red posole turned out fantastic, by the way. I will definitely be adding this to my regular rotation of recipes without a doubt.

(Note: I previously submitted an update for this cookbook 1 + months ago but it never appeared. That update was for the butternut squash bisque along with a photo – not sure why it never updated)

I made the Easy Beef & Noodle Soup (Page 63) – pic included. This is from the so-called “Superfast Simmers” chapter. The idea is to use part store-bought ingredients and part homemade. I wanted to start making these so I could have some quick soup ideas under my belt for when I needed soup on a pinch.

I was very impressed and will be adding this to my regular rotation of soup recipes. This soup was excellent and also extremely easy. What’s more, you can easily store the ingredients in the cupboard so they are available when you need them. It’s basically 1 can condensed beef broth, 1 can cream of onion soup (I had no idea there was cream of onion soup, but my grocer had it), water, noodles and ground beef. The soup came together rather quickly. You can even prepare some of this in advance (like the pasta noodles and beef) so that the process is even faster. That’s what I did.

Next time I make this I may use basic onion soup. These cream-based soups don’t always blend easily (not the recipe’s fault). I used my immersion blender to smooth it out before I added the other ingredients. So far this is the 3rd soup I have made from this book – prior soups were the red posole (see original review); butternut squash bisque (Amazon never posted my update) and this soup.

This is the best soup book . 400 recipes , yes you probably won't make them all but it also gives guideline's on how to make your own with section for soup and chili . Using any ingredients you have , seasonal etc. Crockpot conversion .

This is a great cookbook for soups and stews. It's got recipes for anything you can think of. Definitely worth it, but you'll never cook all the recipes, that would take forever!
