I am very grateful to have found the book, "Action! In the Classroom." It has been incredibly valuable to me as I have been preparing to teach (and create) a video production class for our high school. It is thorough, well-written, the illustrations are terrific, and the resources provided on the web are just fantastic. Excellent.

This book was purchased for a graduate level digital video course designed to teach teachers how to use video in the classroom. The book has a lot of information about taking an idea for a video, and moving it through all the steps to a final product. For any teacher who wants to use video in their classroom there's a lot of ideas to get you started. As for student projects, there are a ton of things too.

I highly recommend this book for any teacher who wants to use student/teacher made video in their classroom.

The problem then arising is that a concept of public international law which only admits either rights or obligations cannot be regarded as coherent. The author, however, takes and substantiates the position that coherence can be achieved by suppressing the mutual exclusivity of both frameworks. This move paves the way to formulating the function of public international law in terms of the constituting of international society.

Paula Harrison is the author of Faerie Tribes (for older readers) and The Rescue Princesses (a younger series). She wanted to be a writer from a young age but spent many happy years being a primary school teacher first. She finds inspiration in lots of things from cloud shapes to snippets of conversation. She loves sandy beaches and eating popcorn. She lives with her husband and children in Buckinghamshire, which is nowhere near the sea. Whenever possible, she packs her family into the car and journeys far and wide to find a sandy beach where she can paddle in the waves.

Books being reissued under new series name

Revised Review (original below): This book/series is going to be reissued under the title RED MOON RISING, BOOK 1 in April 2015. Meanwhile my child is extremely disappointed that the third book in the series was not released as promised on Jan. 8, 2015. I suppose that means at least another year until the publisher, NASTY CROW, gets around to BOOK 3 again. If you ask me, this was a poor marketing move. My kid says she is so mad she will never, ever read any more of Paula Harrison's books. Personally, I agree with her. Interestingly, A search for the title RED MOON RISING brings up all sorts of unsavory books with graphic covers not appropriate for children to view. Good luck with the marketing, NASTY CROW publishing.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: 8 year old daughter is bananas for this series. It is written for slightly older, more mature kids than the Rescue Princess series, by the same author. My girl loved the Rescue Princesses, read all 12 available, wanted more, so I thought we would try this. I have not read the book yet, though my daughter urges me to do so. However, I can tell there is much laughter and suspense involved, judging from the giggles and gasps emanating from illicit midnight reading of this book. Wish it was available as an actual book instead of just on the kindle. On the other hand, my daughter has no idea how long it actually is, about twice as long as a Rescue Princess book, and would probably have been intimidated by a book of that thickness. Instead she persevered through it, and the next one too. Waiting for the third installment coming in January 2015l!

MAJ Watson I presume?

As a Holmes fan, I was a bit wary of this book before I opened it, but Ryan's characterization is spot on and whilst I read, I could see in my mind, my favourite Watson Film/TV version played by Martin Freeman (BBC Sherlock). The scenario was perfect for a Holmes story, and the Flanders WW1 setting brought a fascinating background to the problem faced by Watson.

One small thing I enjoyed particularly was the copious product placement - made decidedly humorous, by all products being for British officers of WW1 vintage!

I keenly look forward to the next offering waiting for me on my kindle!!!

This new series of Dr. Watson mysteries is excellent. This book picks up where Dead Man's Land left off, and includes a great surprise at the end (I won't spoil it). I can't wait for book three!

Nobel Laureate Golding, who died in 1993, explores the disturbing relationships between the mystical, the sacred and the profane in ancient Greece in his 13th and final novel. Narrated by an octogenarian prophetess named Arieka, the book proceeds in rigidly linear form to recount her life from birth onward, employing a distinctly British voice that is mildly philosophical, occasionally graphic, often self-deprecating and generally rather arch. The young Arieka is ugly and dangerously naive, and she apparently possesses mysterious powers and a propensity for mischief that make her impossible to marry off. In late adolescence, she is "adopted" by Ionides, the High Priest at Delphi. Worldly and somewhat cynical, Ionides manages the renowned Delphic oracle like a lucrative tourist site, often fabricating prophecies to soothe the masses. Knowing that Arieka would make an ideal Pythia?the double-tongued Lady, voice of Apollo?he takes her under his care, educating her in a massive bookroom. That Arieka herself is never fully realized as a character is partly the result of her "occupation"?she is, after all, a medium, the human mouthpiece for the prophetic god, and not much else?and in part because she has been left in draft form amid an essentially unfinished narrative. The novel's philosophical framework is in place: questions about faith and exploitation, slavery and freedom abound, as do musings on human societies and their all-too-human perversions. But the plot (and an underdeveloped subplot in which Ionides attempts to subvert Roman rule) feels rushed and inconclusive, and its characters, while articulate, remain curiously soulless.

Nobel Prize winner Golding had finished only the second draft of this book when he died in 1993, a fact the publisher justifiably felt a need to include in a forenote. The story of Arieka (Little Barbarian), a sexually alluring and rebellious girl of ancient Greek Aetolia, is awfully promising but needs literary flesh. Arieka flees an arranged marriage, thereby shaming her family and dooming herself to a life of spinsterhood, when Ionides, the high priest of the nearby Delphic oracle, offers to make her a Pythia, or priestess of the oracle. Arieka exhibits such an extraordinary affinity for the gods that she soon becomes First Pythia, a role she plays with aplomb. When a winter storm threatens their buildings, Ionides and Arieka travel to Athens to raise funds-as if the pope, in order to put a new roof on St. Peter's Basilica, made the rounds of New York's cocktail circuit. Things take a turn for the worse when Ionides, always the schemer, gets involved in a plot against the Roman aggressors. The novel is somewhat undeveloped, but the author's reputation guarantees interest. Recommended for most collections, especially those wishing to fill out the Golding oeuvre.

Golding, the late Nobel laureate for literature (which he was awarded in 1983), used the historical past with great understanding, most notably in the moving, magnificent The Spire (1964), a medieval novel about the construction of, obviously, a cathedral spire. Now, ancient Greece supplies not only its landscape but also its myths and legends for his posthumously published novel, which is about the religious shrine at Delphi. Arieka, a young girl with seemingly cosmic powers, is coaxed into becoming a Delphic oracle, a vehicle for speaking the wisdom of the gods. In old age, she looks back over her career as a divine voice, and from her recounting of her Delphic days, particularly her relationship with the high priest, we witness the creep of cynicism into the Delphic theology as a result of the slip of Hellenistic culture from its place of prominence in the civilized world, as it is forced to give way to the growing embrace and even suffocation of Roman power. Golding's brief novel brilliantly vitalizes a fascinating aspect of ancient history. Brad Hooper

The Double Bind of The Double Tongue

This is Golding at his gentlest. As with The Inheritors, Golding goes into the ancient past for his material, choosing as his protagonist the reluctant Oracle at Delphi in a time when Greek culture and political power were waning, and Roman influence under Julius Caesar was fast becoming a juggernaut. Her agon is the nature of her faith in Greek religious tradition, caught as she is between the economics, ethics, and metaphysics of religious and priestly praxis.
Golding has freed himself from the contraints of his earnest and often spellbinding Christianity here: the Oracle is a Greek Matty Windrover/Pincher Martin in some ways, though not as intensely immersed in the spiritual. But Golding also christianizes his subject in subtle and, for Christian readers at any rate, engaging ways. Paul's statue "to the unknown god" figures here, as does the Apollo/Christ connection so often discussed in myth criticism and anthropology. That Christ may not be easily recognizeable, however. He has more akin with Donne's "three-personed God"--at least as Donne would want Him--than he does with the persona of the NT.
My chief complaint is that the novel is too short. It lacks a substantial middle, in Aristotelian terms, so that the rising action feels a bit malformed and hurried. I imagine that, had he lived, Golding would have shaped and expanded it considerably. But overall, the premise is interesting, and the text works aesthetically. Golding had lost none of his ability to "see through to the heart of things" eschatological and ontological, and to represent those experiences in language in intense and ultimately rewarding ways. I recommend it unreservedly to readers familiar with Golding's oeuvre beyond Lord of the Flies.

The Weird Oracle.

An aged prophetess at Delphi, the most sacred oracle in ancient Greece, looks back over her strange life as the Pythia, the First Lady and voice of the god Apollo. As a young virgin with disturbing psychic powers, Aricka was handed over to the sevice of the shrine by her parents. She has now spent sixty years as the very medium, the thorn mouthpiece , of equivocal mantic utterances from the bronze tripod in the sanctuary beneath the temple. Over a lifetime at the mercy of god and people and priests she has watched the decay of Delphi's fortunes and its influence in the world. Her reflections on the mysteries of the oracle, which her own weird gifts have embodied are matched by her feminine insight into the human frailties of the High Priest himself, a true Athenian, who's intriguing against the Romans brings about humiliatian and desasters.

This extraordinary short novel, left in draft at the author's sudden dead in 1993 is a psychological and historical triumph. An absolutely convincing portrait of a woman's experiance, something rare in Golding's work. Aricka the Pythia is one of his finest creation.

Interesting, yet somewhat unsatisfying.

I must agree with other reviewers on this work: while certainly an interesting read, it is not quite as satisfying as one might hope -- especially if familiar with the author's other works.
It must be kept in mind that this book is but a draft, unfinished upon Golding's untimely death. Yet for that very reason it is of interest to those who are intrigued by the workings of the writing process: here is a text that is but in 'draft form', and offers a none-too-often seen glimplse into a writer's mind, before revisions and editing have cleared away all the excess stone from the statue.
Golding's grasp of the Classical world lends a nice touch of familiarity to this short novella, which I would recommend for fans of his works, and those curious of the writing process.

Radical Forgiveness--a Christian's calling

When Peter asked Jesus how many times he should forgive his brother, Jesus called him to radical forgiveness. Jesus ushered in a new kind of forgiveness when he put aside the "eye for an eye" theology of the Old Testament. As Christians, we are called to forgive even when it's difficult and sometimes seems impossible.

Brian Zahnd is blunt about our need to forgive in his book, "Radical Forgiveness". He uses examples from the lives of Corrie Ten Boom and, more recent, the Amish community who forgave the man who killed little girls in an Amish school. They even offered compassion and sympathy to the family of the killer.

Forgiveness is not a popular concept in today's society. Reading the headlines, you will see our world is all about justice and retribution. However, if we, being sinners, were offered total and unconditional forgiveness at the foot of the cross, how can we not offer forgiveness to our fellow men?

Zahnd's book is hard to read, but it is necessary. He pokes you where it hurts and brings to light what we need to deal with as Christians.

forgiveness as the essence of Christianity

Zahnd is concerned that Christianity is in danger of fading into a kind of cherished relic. If Christianity is to be relevant in the twenty-first century, it needs a fresh message. Not something new or novel, he argues, but a return to Christianity's roots.

"If Christianity is about anything," he writes, "it is about forgiveness." (xix)

As Zahnd explores forgiveness, he notes how difficult it can be, how much and how often we are to do it, that it is living in imitation of Christ, its relationship to forgetting, how it affects our happiness in the future, how it goes against many cultures (of revenge), it requires leaving justice in the hands of God, it is the way of the cross, and it means replacing condemnation with mercy.

He writes about the importance of forgiveness to our own welfare as we overcome evil with good. Our story takes a turn when we choose to forgive. Evil is no longer the final word.

His section on justice is thought provoking, arguing that "God interprets justice in terms of relationship and reconciliation, not necessarily in terms of what we might consider fair." (121) Zahnd reminds us, "The cross is where we do not get what we deserve." (126)

Zahnd has included many inspiring stories of people who were obedient and forgave. Many of the experiences were so painful, yet the people forgave.

Zahnd writes that perhaps his main motive in writing this book is "to help recover the true beauty of Christianity as found in forgiveness." (xxi) He has done that well. This is an inspiring book, reminding us to live out the essence of Christianity.

This book is primarily for Christians. But non-Christians will find here the essential core of Christianity, the reality of God's forgiveness as the basis for Christians forgiving one another.

No Cheap Forgiveness

If Christianity isn’t about forgiveness, it’s about nothing at all.

Goal: to become disciples of love who master the art of forgiveness.

If we enter the Christian faith to find forgiveness, we must continue in the faith to become forgiving people, because to be an authentic follower of Christ we must embrace the centrality of forgiveness.

When Christianity speaks of forgiveness, should there be an asterisk attached to the word to indicate that forgiveness is not applicable in extreme situations like the concentration camps of Nazi Germany, the ethnic cleansing, in the former Yugoslavia, and the tribal massacres of Rwanda?

These are just a few quotes from the book.

I don’t usually read other people’s reviews before I read the book and write down my own thoughts. I’m not sure why I scanned through the reviews on Amazon, but I did. I was immediately apprehensive when one reviewer described “Radical Forgiveness” as a difficult book to read.

I’m not put off by scholarly books, but I was afraid that was what I was diving into.

I couldn’t have been more wrong!

What makes this book “difficult” is that it is very simple and direct. It is not the kind of book a person can read and remain unchallenged. I think it would make an excellent small group study for groups who are wanting to take their faith to a deeper level.

I would strongly recommend this book. I am pleased to have it in my library.
