About the Author
John Goddard, one of the world's most famous explorers and adventurers, led the first expedition in history down the entire 4,200 mile-long Nile, the world's longest river. The Los Angeles Times called it "the most remarkable adventure of this generation." He was also the first man to explore the entire length of Africa's 2,700-mile-long Congo River. Goddard has been the subject of numerous articles in magazines such as National Geographic, Life and Reader's Digest and over 200 television shows. His book Kayaks Down the Nile recounts his first major expedition.

First Adventure
(And Almost the Last)
One of my earliest childhood memories, reinforced by my mother in later years, was an incident I experienced when I was five years old. We were living in Oakland at the time, and I can still remember my excitement when we boarded the ferry to cross the vast, gleaming bay for a day of shopping in San Francisco. The raucous seagulls swooping and wheeling all around us, the scuttling green crabs on the rocks, the colorful starfish clinging to the dock pilings all were fascinating to me. According to my parents, from the time I could first walk I displayed an insatiable curiosity and interest in nature and all living creatures, from spiders to horses. I frequently had to be restrained from picking up potentially harmful insects or from petting strange animals. (My father once commented, John is a natural naturalist.)
I had never been on a boat before, and the cruise across the bay was the most thrilling event of my life. I wanted to explore every area of the ferry, from the wheelhouse to the engine room, dragging my long-suffering mother along behind me.
We finally settled down on one of the wooden benches provided for the passengers on the top deck, so that Mom could collapse for a rest. I couldn't sit still for very long, however and, under her vigilant watch, I skipped over to the rail to look down at the beautiful waves churned up by the prow as it cut through the water.
Suddenly, there appeared what to me were large gray fish (actually dolphins), swiftly swimming and diving in the frothy bow waves. What were these incredible creatures that could slice through the water as fast as our boat and not be run over? I was so excited by this mysterious spectacle that I quickly climbed over the rail on the ocean side, holding on with both hands, and leaned out for a better view of the graceful creatures. Suppressing a scream, my mother leaped up from the bench and raced over to the rail. With the help of a passenger, she wrenched me back to safety and delivered the scolding of my life.
Years later my mother described this event as one of the most frightening experiences she had been through with me. ÒI was sure you were going to lose your hold on the rail, fall into the water and drown before we could stop the ferry and rescue you.

The man changed my life

You know John Goddard's story. When he was 15 years old, he heard his father's friends complaining about never having done the things they had really dreamed of doing. He resolved never to let that happen to him. This book is an excellent eyewitness account of some of Goddard's many adventures, and it provides some rather unique insight into the impulses and the courage required to lead a rich and uniquely-individual life.
Fast forward 25 years later to 1965 and there I am, a shy, insecure 15-year-old kid listening to John Goddard tell that same story to a high school assembly. The thought that I might one day get old and regret never having done the things I really wanted to do filled me with dread. And with purpose.
My life was changed from that point forward, thanks to him. I hitchhiked around the world, became a war correspondent, wrote a movie, had tea with Chinese premiere Deng Xiaoping, drank wine with a young Kurdish rebel named Jalal Talabani, saw the Shah of Iran overthrown (and barely escaped my own "Argo" adventure), wrote books, got married, had children, made money, lost money, and learned things I never even dreamed I could learn.
That was almost 50 years ago when I heard Goddard speak, and it's amazing to me how powerfully his message -- "Don't waste your one and only life!" -- has echoed in my brain through all those years.
Not many of us have the power to change someone else's life for the better with just a few words during a high school assembly. John Goddard did.
I spoke to the man a couple of days ago -- first time ever, in fact. He is sick now, but still fighting. His spirit seems undiminished.
To those who dream of exploring the world, naysayers would try to remind you that every inch of the world has already been explored.
John Goddard would tell you, "Maybe, but not by you!"

Goddard is a good man

No chest-thumping here. That charge is ridiculous. I'm happy to say that I know John Goddard personally and he's the furthest thing from a chest-thumper or braggart. In fact, the book is written with great humility. If you want chest-thumping or bragging, read Mark Jenkins (who is a hell of a writer, by the way). Goddard's feats are worthy of admiration and, trust me, he's a fantastic human being.

The Survivor

This is a GREAT book by the Ultimate Adventurer/Explorer, John Goddard. The book covers many daring and dangerous activities that many would not even attempt. Goddard's living-on-the-edge lifestyle will definitely leave you on the edge-of-your-seat with his thrilling brushes with potential death. A must read. Also, his book "Kayaks Down the Nile" is equally thrilling...in both books you'll be shaking your head asking yourself," HOW did he ever live through it?" Simply...he IS the ultimate survivor! I couldn't put the books down until the end.
