Abd Al-Rahman III: The First Cordoban Caliph (Makers of the Muslim World), by Maribel Fierro

‘Abd al-Rahman III (891-961) was the greatest of the Umayyad rulers of al-Andalus
(Islamic Spain and Portugal) and the first of them to take the title of Caliph. A
strong leader and an astute politician, he conducted campaigns against Muslim
rebels within his own realm, fought the Christian Kings in the north of the Iberian
Peninsula, confronted the Fatimids in North Africa and founded the palatine town of
Madinat al-Zahra. By the time of his death in 961, ‘Abd al-Rahman III had pacified
the whole of al-Andalus and made Cordoba a capital city to rival the greatest of the
age. This book is the first biography of this fascinating and hugely influential figure
to be published in English.
Accessible yet authoritative, it also feature a comprehensive guide to further
reading, and will prove an indispensable resource for readers of all backgrounds.

A very good introduction to Spanish Muslim history
By Gogol
I am becoming something of a fan of this "Makers of the Muslim world" Series after reading the excellent "Ahmed al-Mansur" Book. This one is almost as good. Like all the books in the series the author first gives us background into the the subject topic which in this case is perhaps the most famous of Muslim rulers of Andalusia. The author begins with the history of the conquest of Iberia by the Muslims in the early 8th Century and goes into some detail about the ethnic and social make up of Andalusia in the first 3 centuries of Muslim rule. It will come as something of a surprise to many to read that Andalusia was mostly Christian for about 300 years of its history and it was only around the 10th and 11th Centuries when large conversion and migration meant that Andalusia became a mostly Muslim land.

Also interesting is to read about the social tensions between Arab, Berber and native Iberian. Loyalties seem to have swapped from one to another very easily and it is interesting to read also how mixed marriage was very common in Iberia between Muslim and Christian from the common man to the ruler and often the Muslim rulers were related by marriage to Christian kings of the north. Petty Muslim rulers of the north often were in alliance with Christians in the north at times against fellow Muslims in battles over power and land.

Into all of this came Abd al-Rahman the third. It is quite remarkable in that it was under his rule that Andalusia came to be something of the place that we tend to think about. A cultured land of the arts and poetry. Where Byzantine kings would send artisans to build magnificent palaces and gardens (The author points out this may be an extension of what the Umayyads began in Syria by copying Byzantine style, Abd al-Rahaman is confirming the continuation of his family in the West) It was also under him that Andalusia reinforced itself as a staunch Sunni - Maliki state steadfast against Fatimid Egypt that had envious eyes on the Maghreb.

The author doesn't go much into what happened after his rule and seems to have used mostly western sources (Or Arabic sources translated into French or Spanish) But nevertheless this is an excellent introduction to Spanish Muslim history.

Islam as 'Big Tent'
By Robert Lebling
Professor Crone of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., is the perfect scholar to edit this timely series of portraits of "the men and women who made the Muslim world what it is today."

The Danish-born, British-educated Islamic historian is known for both brilliance and boldness. She thinks outside the box, and has clearly done so for this series.

Some seventeen volumes have been issued out of an expected fifty. The books are well-structured, clearly written monographs, each running about 160 pages in length. Useful for scholars and students, the volumes also have another important readership segment: those with "no prior knowledge of Islam or its history," to quote the publisher. This is the segment that will likely benefit most from the series.

The portraits describe their subjects often in fascinating detail: we learn, for example, that the caliph `Abd al-Malik's breath was so remarkably bad that it could kill passing house flies. But the books also capture the flavor of their times and highlight the most important issues of the day.

Some of the subjects are predictable choices: as mentioned, `Abd al-Malik, builder of the Dome of the Rock; `Abd al-Rahman III, first Umayyad caliph of al-Andalus; Ibn `Arabi, one of the most influential thinkers of Islamic Spain; the Abbasid scholar-caliph al-Ma'mun; and the celebrated poets Abu Nuwas and al-Mutanabbi.

But many of the personalities are not easily recognized by readers unfamiliar with the field of Islamic studies. Some of the surprises are: Amir Khusraw, the 13th-century Indian poet who synthesized Muslim and Indian culture; Shaykh Mufid, a prominent Imami Shi'ite scholar of medieval Baghdad who introduced rationalism to Imamist belief; and Ahmad Riza Khan Barelwi, a leading Indian Sunni Muslim reformer of the early 20th century.

On balance, the series pays extra attention to Shi'ites and others of heterodox belief. This makes sense in today's world - one need only look at the political demographics of modern-day Lebanon and Iraq to understand why.

The impression we get from these volumes is that Islam is a "big tent" -- a term commonly applied to inclusive political parties. Diversity is a key aspect of the faith. As the pilgrimage to Makkah demonstrates each year, there is plenty of room in this particular tent for believers of all descriptions and inclinations.
