The Bullies of Wall Street: This Is How Greed Messed Up Our Economy, by Sheila Bair

Can knowing how a financial crisis happened keep it from happening again? Sheila Bair, the former chairman of the FDIC, explains how the Great Recession impacted families on a personal level in this easy-to-understand book “that puts a human face on the economic crisis” (School Library Journal).

In 2008, America went through a terrible financial crisis, and we are still suffering the consequences. Families lost their homes and struggled to pay for food and medicine. Businesses didn’t have money to buy equipment or hire and pay workers. Millions of people lost their jobs and their life savings. More than 100,000 businesses went bankrupt.

As the former head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Sheila Bair worked to protect families during the crisis and keep their bank deposits safe. In The Bullies of Wall Street, she describes the many ways in which a broken system led families into financial trouble, and also explains the decisions being made at the time by the most powerful people in the country—from CEOs of multinational banks, to heads of government regulatory committees—that led to the recession.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—In 2008 the United States suffered a financial crisis and recession unlike any other since the stock market crash of 1929. At the time of this crisis, Bair was the chairperson of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. According to the author, the prime reason for this crisis boiled down to too much borrowing. While not excusing individuals completely, the author sharply criticizes CEOs of large banks and their allies in government. Bair convincingly presents her case by first relaying six (fictional but based on actual people she encountered) stories of youths whose families were negatively impacted by the recession in one way or another (subprime mortgages, loan modifications, declining property values, loss of jobs.). She goes on to describe in intimate detail her involvement with bank bailouts and banking reforms. Her analysis of the crisis (particularly the "Too Big to Fail" mentality) and the six case studies are very perceptive. Readers are given keen insight into the link between banking and the economy. An excellent selection that puts a human face on the economic crisis.—Jeanette Lambert, Nashville-Davidson County Schools, TN

CHANGING THE NARRATIVE
By James Tarbell
Americans blame themselves for the lost houses, lost jobs, lost savings and lost childhoods caused by the 2008 financial crisis. That blame is entirely misplaced. Sheila Bair places the blame directly where it belongs on the systemic incentives that turned Wall Street into a failed gambling casino, and on the corrupted political system supporting bankers, investors and insurance companies, which reaped the benefits, while failing to support the American people who suffered the consequences. These actions perpetrated a disaster, and millions of Americans and their traditionally indomitable spirit that have been crushed by their misplaced self blame.
Ms. Bair tells the misfortunes six young adults suffered during the great recession and recounts her own struggles to fix the problems whilst head of he Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The young adult genre she uses is perfect for personalizing an event that caused us all hardships as our common monetary system, which we depend upon for survival, crashed to the ground due to the greed of the Bullies of Wall Street. Sheila tells us “what is going on:” Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Timothy Geitner; Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Henry Paulson; and Chief Executive Officer of Citigroup, Mr. Vikram Pandit; become Tim, Hank and Pandit of a middle school rat pack. Gone are the niceties and nuances of adult talk that often leaves one wondering what the truth actually is. In this telling: people get “angry”, hold “grudges” and “glare” across the table; policies are a “hodgepodge,” mortgages are “crazy,” regulators “play childish games” and banking operations are “nuts.” We see the “bad” policies, “stupid” actions and “blockheads” that carry them out. Now, those are truths we can all relate to. Rarely do we see them in adult media and even more rarely do we see them from an insider like Sheila Bair.
This is a book that all Americans should read. It is an opportunity for the American people to clearly see the workings of our financial/political system and a call for all Americans, young and old, to fight for solutions that will make our lives whole again. Let the healing of our personal spirits and our financial/political systems begin.

A great poignant, educational read
By Michele Heller
Sheila Bair’s “Bullies of Wall Street” explains the 2008 financial crisis and its human impact in a way kids can relate to and understand. My own boys and I had tears in our eyes when we read about how a boy and his dog were affected, but my sons finished the book with a much better understanding of what caused the crisis and the importance of making informed personal finance decisions. I highly recommend this book not only for young adults, but for parents as well.

Public ripped off by the banks, and then ripped off again by the rescue.
By Captain Midnight
At times it seemed to be directed to a younger audience but the message was extremely clear. The majority of the government effort was to save the banks and those who profited from the schemes they dreamed up to make money for themselves. Any effort to help the regular folks that got caught up in the fallout were designed to be as difficult as possible to qualify for or were largely ineffective. Certainly, no member of the working class had money handed to them in the manner that the banks received. A real lesson in how our society rewards those who have plenty with more, even when they are doing wrong.
