.....Great book! I bought this book for my husband as a Christmas present. You see, we were both born in the City of Brotherly Love. We followed the Phillies when we lived in Philadelphia and continued to follow them as we moved around the country. Let me tell you, he LOVED this book. I also read the book and can say that you will really enjoy this book if you are a baseball fan from anywhere around the country, not just Philadelphia. I highly recommend this book!

This book is a true gift for those who are longing for some sense of meaning. MacNamara, an Irish theologian, beautifully writes about the desire that we all have, whatever our religious faith, to becomefully human. This book is full of the idea that we are called to true humanity by being gentle with ourselves and paying close attention to our longing for the absolute. Unlike many feel-good ideas that are currently in vogue, MacNamara challenges us to embrace this desire deep within us and become transformed into living the best possible lives of ourselves; lives of grace and dignity. Although he writes from a Christian perspective, this book will appeal to all serious seekers of meaning.
I recieved this book as a gift and have read it so many times, it is falling apart. Read this book if you want thoughtful, intelligent conversation on what it means to leave your old self behind and embrace your full humanity.

Canadian writer Hunter struggles to make the transition from poetry to fiction in her debut collection, an uneven affair that consists of a brisk but touching novella and six up-and-down short stories. The title novella deals with the plight of a Londoner named Emma who conceives a child with her married lover. Peevish and annoyed, Emma is at first too prickly to win the reader's affection as she vents her anger at her lover for providing only halfhearted emotional and financial support. But Hunter writes insightfully about Emma's dilemmas and emotions once her protagonist begins to assert her independence, and the graceful finale features an intriguing shift in which Emma begins to delve into her family history in Dublin and then plans a journey there to have the baby. "Hagiography" is a quirky tale describing the unique romantic situation of a woman who believes she has a divine calling to work in a porn palace; the denouement is surprising and touching. The whimsical "At the Bus Stop in Love with the Idea" relates an encounter on a Dublin bus between an ordinary man and a troubled woman obsessed with his argyle socks. "We Live in This World" is a poignant story of family love and loss. Other stories are more problematic: several are based on ill-conceived, clumsily developed conceits, and Hunter's habit of building her tales around disaffected women occurs at the expense of underdeveloped male characters. The potential for excellence shines through in the second half of Hunter's novella, and one hopes she will build on her ability to express epiphanic moments in clear, economical prose.

Use This Correctly and Don't Cheat!

This is not the Wuthering book by Emily Bronte. It is a Cliffs Notes Study Guide version. This is good to read but only if you have read the whole book by Bronte and you have to write a book report and just need some references from the Cliff Notes version if there was something in the book that you didn't understand. Don't try to con your teacher by only reading the Cliff Notes version. Just read the book and read a great story and impress your teacher. It always amazes me how dumb some students can be by trying to cheat with Cliff Notes, I mean the teacher always can tell when someone has done it too so it's not like they are fooling anyone. Cliff Notse are very helpful and have gotten a bad rap from sneaky cheaters!

This is a good handbook to have. The summaries are useful and it contains some diagrams that help you figure out some of the more confusing parts of the novel. Helpful in trying to understand a sometimes difficult novel.

Hippocrates said, "Let food be your medicine," and hundreds of Internet sites echo his maxim, usually as part of a sales pitch for supplements, pet foods, or other products. Diet was indeed the cornerstone of medical practice for some 2000 years, but for most of that time patients died like flies anyway, and the best one could say for the various dietary treatments was that they killed fewer people than the other medical and surgical procedures of the day. In our evidence-based era, doctors have grown skeptical of Hippocrates's precept, and many conditions that were formerly treated with diet are nowadays treated predominantly with drugs. The domain of academic nutrition has shrunk since the heady days when the vitamins were discovered, and the medical curriculum usually contains no more than a token course in nutrition if the subject is taught at all. In contrast, patients have embraced functional foods and dietary supplements to prevent and cure a wide variety of ills, creating a market that is now worth over $30 billion per year in the United States. Sales of supplements in the United States were bolstered by a 1994 law that largely abolished oversight by the Food and Drug Administration, and manufacturers of supplements are therefore free to imply that their products cure anything from loneliness to cancer. Thus, quackery abounds. However, many patients have a genuine critical interest in finding out what diet can do for them, and for that reason alone medical professionals should keep abreast of the subject. But there is another reason: there are quite a few dietary regimens that really work. To name some: two fish meals a week are as effective as statins in preventing death among patients with cardiac disease; diets high in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products are as effective as drugs in controlling hypertension; and there is a real possibility that dietary changes may reduce the risk of major cancers. Every doctor should therefore have at least one book at hand that summarizes the salient dietary facts and fallacies. But is Nutrition in the Prevention and Treatment of Disease that book? The book does have a number of things going for it. It is geared to clinical practice and implementation, and it is strong on the topics of patients' behavior and how to influence it, as well as how to evaluate the success or failure of nutritional interventions. For instance, the chapter called "Tools and Techniques to Facilitate Eating Behavior Change" teaches physicians step by step how to talk to and especially how to listen to a patient, so that one can turn his or her initial stage of precontemplation ("Quit nagging me") into contemplation ("Why should I?"), followed by preparation ("Where can I go to learn . . . ?"), then action ("I am doing it but . . . "), and finally maintenance ("I don't have to think about it much anymore"). More than half of the 84 authors list dietetics as their first degree, which may explain the affinity with practice; for instance, the chapter on enteral nutrition gives handy tricks for tube placement, and the chapter on gastrointestinal symptoms lists medications for excess gas. Unfortunately, the book is stronger on implementation than on science. Some of the authors are prominent researchers, but most are not, and as a consequence some chapters lack the balance and the nuances that can be learned only at the front line of research. Thus, a well-organized chapter by Slattery and Caan on nutrition and colon cancer gives a sober and balanced -- though still positive -- summary of this difficult field, but another chapter blandly states that increased intake of fiber has been shown to be helpful in decreasing the risk of colorectal cancer. The chapter on supplements awards the designation "supported by scientific evidence" to herbal treatments of doubtful efficacy, such as ginkgo for dementia and saw palmetto for benign prostatic hypertrophy. A helpful chapter on analysis, presentation, and interpretation of dietary data explains how obese people underreport their intake of "sinful" foods, including cakes, soft drinks, and sugars, but elsewhere it is stated that consumption of sugar does not lead to increased body weight, a conclusion that rests largely on studies in which obese people reported low intakes of sugar-rich foods. The book clearly has its positive sides. It is strong on strategies for dietary modification and on cultural and socioeconomic influences on eating and exercise behavior. Unlike earlier textbooks, it has a large section on the genetic influences on nutritional health. The 8-by-11-in. format is handy; the weight, at 2.1 kg, is manageable; and the organization into sections and chapters is clear. The index is reasonably comprehensive, although its organization into four levels demands that you know fairly precisely what you are looking for. Many chapters, though not all, end with a brief summary. On the other hand, most chapters are rather long on text and short on illustrations. Also, my check of six randomly selected references against PubMed showed errors in three, which raises some worries about accuracy in general. Nutrition in the Prevention and Treatment of Disease is a useful additional resource for nutritional investigators and for dietitians involved in research, but it is not authoritative enough to serve as the sole source on nutritional science. John Wesley preached that one book was knowledge enough for him, but that book was the Bible. There is no bible of nutritional science, and therefore it is always a good idea to check multiple sources. The ones that I have within reach are Modern Nutrition in Health and Disease, edited by Shils et al. (Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, 1999), even though it is unmanageably heavy; Biochemical and Physiological Aspects of Human Nutrition, edited by Stipanuk (Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders, 2000), in case I really need to know how things work; and Truswell's ABC of Nutrition (London: BMJ Books, 1999), in case I need something fast. Susan holds a Master’s degree in Computer Information Systems from Boston University, and has over 25 years of experience in the computer industry.

Well I am Happy

Well I found this book extremely useful. Okay so you could wade thru the doc, but this book has everthing in one place with some easy to follow examples. It also encouraged me to take a look at using EM rather than typing everything in on the command line.

Good overview, but frustated by errors and lack of source

I'm new to both Oracle and Data Warehousing and I haven't found many Data Warehousing texts specific to Oracle. I was hoping this would not only be a source for an architecture and design overview, but I also hoped to setup and work through the examples I saw in text as I perused it in the book store. I mean, no one would publish a modern computer book without providing downloadable source, would they? Maybe I missed something, but there is no CD, no reference in the text, and I checked the publishers web site. Found nothing! Especially for a topic like Data Warehousing, where learning to manage large amounts of data is the point of the whole subject, I found it amazing that no sample data is provided.

Along this same line, the Appendix that shows the schema setup for the example database has errors in the script code, plus the steps are out of order. Apparently the authors expect you to use the Enterprise Manager to setup your database. The setup scripts appear to be an afterthought, and do not appear to be edited. If the authors had provided downloadable scripts and data, perhaps they would have been forced to work through this setup themselves and would have avoid this problem.

I'm building sample data, and reading through the text, but for $60.00 I expected more.

About the Author
Scot Sothern spent forty unsettled years hustling freelance photography. Scot worked in department stores, churches, bowling alleys, sports events, and high school proms. He worked in a cave at a tourist-trap in Missouri, making and selling photo mementos. Traveling with a portable studio, he made and sold children's portraits and novelties–photo buttons and key-chain viewers. Scot shot model's portfolios, head-shots, and nude magazine layouts. He spent three years in Tallahassee, Florida, with a photography studio, three seasons with a high school yearbook studio in Los Angeles, and has been employed in three different cities as a darkroom technician. Forced into commercial retirement by the crippling byproduct of a motorcycle mishap, Scot now writes books and has continued making photographs.

curb service

An interesting read if one is interested in street life. I have been researching the changes in public morals - my interest has been primarily in the post Civil War Gold Rush era. I am from Nome Alaska which was a wide open town in the early 1900's with a walled off area of several blocks featuring brothels. Prostitution today is still prevalent, and this book would seem to reveal the seediness of this unfortunate form of entrepreneurship.

Well worth waiting for the "Truth"

Scot Sothern had me duped for decades. Even as the bestfriend and college roommate of his wife, Linda, I was still one of the many people who was told he "only photographs the whores." Nothing else. I have been familiar with the pictures for years, but the stark truth behind the photos, had even me, turning the pages as rapidly as I could, yet not so fast as to miss every perfectly crafted word from Scot's narrative voice. No one has a gift for dialogue like Scot, nor the facility to describe the horrors of being whores in Los Angeles. But now I know that Scot LIVED this life, not just watched it from behind the safety of his camera.

great book for women who workout!

i teach fitness classes at a major national chain. this book is excellent. great ideas, wonderful pictures and tips. no diets (which i don't always like to have mixed with my fitness/exercise books). it's pure exercise moves using barbells, dumbbells, bands, stability balls and machines with good variety on each. if you workout at home only without a gym this probably won't work for you but if you're a gym person this is a great book. i should mention that i really like the diversity of fitness models. that's something you don't always see in fitness books but i really appreciate it. this book is like having a personal trainer! i'm going to use it to select some exercises before i go to the gym then when i get there i'll just do the routine i planned for myself. again, i have lots of exercise experience but i still find this book to be a fresh edititon to my fitness book collection. if you like muscle & fitness hers magazine you'll really like all the workouts in one easy to ready, and pretty, book. good job!!!!

Woohoo!!!....... now I'm ready to get my workout on

I just picked this book up at B&N yesterday and for some of the very reasons previously listed by the other two posters. I love all of the great ideas it has to offer and the diversity of the women in the book. I also love the fact that all the pictures depicting the poses are in COLOR. It even provides exercise routines which includes the number of sets and repetitions along with tips on what or what not to do. For those of you who don't have a gym membership don't fret it offers plenty of exercises you can do at home utilizing dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls, resistance bands, your furniture, a step apparatus, a workout bench, and an exercise ball.
So there's something for everyone at any level. I don't think I've ever been this excited about exercising since there are 101 fully color illustrated exercises to choose from.
I wish that I had ordered it from Amazon because I could have saved money but I'm still happy I got the book.

This is ok for the novice but I would not recommend it for someone who has been working out for any period of time. My mother would greatly benefit from this book since she has never worked out before.
