To cite an old Egyptian cliche, Nasser (1918-1970) was the 'first Egyptian to rule Egypt since Cleopatra.' Deposing the corrupt king Farouk, abolishing the monarchy and negotiating the withdrawal of the British, Nasser was truly beloved by millions. Even after catastrophic military disaster in the 'Six-Day War' of 1967, having resigned in humiliation, such was his standing that people filled the streets to clamor for his reinstatement. In this captivating profile, Joel Gordon examines the legacy of the famous autocrat, being careful to include his limitations as well as his many strengths.

Nqasser remains an untarnished hero nonpareil

First I do not know the author's reason to link the title "(makers of the Muslim World)", because in fact Nasser fought
the corrupt Saudis for their pan-islamist banner. Nasser also abhored the sheikdon and emirates of the gulf states, and
more than Nasser strongly opposed England's engineered "Baghdad Pact" of the four Islamic countries of Iraq,Iran,
Pakistan, and Turkey in the 1950s and joined Nehru's India as the spearhead of a non-aligned movement. However, I am
in no way implying that Joel Gordon, the author, is not fair to Nasser. On the contrary, his book richly chronicles Nasser's life, and as I read the book I felt I was walking along with him. The author's presentation of Nasser's era is replete with details
I have not read in the other eleven books I read of Nasser. Gordon is unstinting in criticising or exposing Nasser errors.
But he ends with the conclusion that regardless of success and adversity[Nasser experienced], he views President Nasser as the emblem of fiery modern Arab nationalism[not islamic] that vibrates dignity and national pride. Indeed the book is so rich with detailing Nasser's talent for leadership, for being a pivot in organizing the "Free Officers Movement" and how Nasser lead a bloodless coup on July 23, 1952, how his colleagues in the FOM wanted to put King Farouk on trial and execute him, but Nasser was in the minority, but his view finally prevailed. Reading "Nasser: Hero of the Arab Nation" is really rewarding for those curious about the Middle East politics and their intrigues. The author views Nasser as incorruptible, dedicated, intelligent, resourceful man who maintained his popularity for eighteen years until his premature death[heart failure]. The Author stamps Nasser as the first true Egyptian to rule the land of Pharaohs since Cleopatra. He shows us how even his[Nasser's] worst enemy was invariably deeply impressed upon meeting the handsome, super-charismatic, straightbacked, solidly built six footer with boundless energy and extra ordinary personality. The author eloquently describes President Nasser's death on September 28, 1970 as an event that sparkled the greatest grief the world has ever seen[near to one million showed up in the streets of Cairo to mourn his death]. The book crowns Nasser's achievements with the building of Aswan High Dam[the greatest engineering feat of the twentieth century on a massive scale]. How President Nasser called the Dam "A pyramid for the living" with its reservoire that stores three years of the Nile water[350 miles long, 55 miles wide], and how this reservoire is named "Lake Nasser", is the largest man-made lake in the world. Finally, "This book is the product of many years of writing - and thinking-- about Nasser, his generation and his era.", in the pen of the author. ___Mutih Skeini
