(Book). The guitar, particularly in its electric form, is the most influential instrument of the past 60 years. Guitar Masters spotlights the players who made it that way: the visionary talents and living legends who developed the sound and style of the electric guitar as we know and love it. This book traces the life stories and assesses the musical legacies of such superstar guitarists as Jeff Beck and Keith Richards as well as anonymous but influential sidemen and behind-the-scenes stalwarts such as James Burton. Veteran music journalist Alan di Perna draws on three decades' worth of experience as a writer and interviewer to extract the essence of what makes these gifted guitarists so influential and unique. Their stories are as diverse as they are inspiring. Yet what all these guitar masters share is an unshakable dedication to their craft and a deeply intuitive connection with their chosen instrument. Whether you're a fan, a player, or a master in your own right, Guitar Masters will give you new insights into the lives and music of the players to whom we owe our very notion of what a guitar sounds like and its extraordinary power to move people like no other instrument.

This book is fantastic! I feel like I got to know the guitar masters personally from the author's descriptions and in depth colorations. Only someone who has had interviews of mutual respect and advanced knowledge of the music world could bring a work like this to the rock-loving community. If you want to know more about the greatest rock guitar players, get this book!!

Long-Overdue Tribute to Some Legendary Axe Players!
By Mike O'Connor
Between 1955 and the mid/late 1970s, the world of rock 'n' roll music witnessed thousands of guitar players strut their stuff. A very few of those 'golden age' guitarists not only knocked socks off, they played key roles in shaping how people thought about electric guitars and how such instruments could be played. Alan di Perna profiles nine members of that musical elite in this wonderfully entertaining 2012 Hal Leonard release.
The nine men profiled in di Perna's book reads like a who's who of rock guitar pickers: Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Pete Townshend, Dave Gilmour, Dick Dale, Buddy Guy, Billy Gibbons, James Burton and Steve Cropper. While some have been chronicled in the past, others have received scant coverage. di Perna does a marvelous job of detailing the life and times of each, his chapters being very much career summaries of each artist who, "in his own way, made glorious, game-changing, populist, heart-wrenchingly beautiful art." (Some of the material was previously published in GUITARWORLD magazine).
I was particularly happy to find James Burton and Steve Cropper within these pages. Those two 'sidemen' quietly and skillfully made immense contributions to rock music and it was heartening to see them receive recognition in print...and to coincidentally learn that both were wonderful human beings along with being gifted players.
Rock fans will enjoy GUITAR MASTERS: INTIMATE PORTRAITS. di Perna's knowledge of and personal friendship with many of the artists makes for an informative, insightful and affectionate tribute to those gifted music makers. Highly recommended.

Masterful Writing on Masterful Musicians
By Sevenx3
I must confess, I've only read 3 of the portraits so far; Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, and David Gilmour. Yet I'm already blown away by the author's insight and his easy way of connecting you with the lives of these famous guitarists. It's funny how you hear all kinds of information in the media throughout your life about famous people and, because of that, think you have an idea about who they are and what they are like. Then you read a work like this and realize you didn't have a clue; their lives are so much more complicated, poignant, full of struggles and triumphs, happiness, sadness, failure and success. In other words, they are like all the rest of us, not the icons the media have portrayed, but regular people who just happen to excel at playing the guitar.
And di Perna doesn't write about them from a far away vantage point or give dry details. His writing is more like your friend telling you a story about another of his friends, with all the warmth and insight that only a close connection with someone could engender. And his descriptive prose and lucid analysis of the music makes you feel like he has heard every song these guitarists have every played. That, coupled with his technical knowledge of their instruments, makes this book a tour de force on the lives of these 9 extraordinary musicians.
I highly recommend this book.
