Nuggets of meaning glimpsed within a radical new vocabulary

Alexander Bard and Jon Soderqvist, Swedish sociologists, analyze the evolution of feudalism into capitalism which is now evolving into a new social paradigm which the authors call "informationalism". They call the new power elite "netocrats", no longer aristocrats (feudalism) or capitalists. Privileged access to netocrat ruling circles is not by means of family birth (feudalism) or by wealth (capitalism) but by social networks and knowledge. The new underclass is called the "consumtariat". Humanism, the enthronement of individualism, is no longer the guiding philosophy but rather "dividualism" characterized by multiple personalities and tribal identities defined by connections with others (for example Facebook friends). The explosion of information serves to confuse the underclass to prevent them from understanding or interfering in the power struggle waged over their heads between capitalists and netocrats (who are destined to win). Bard mentions Julius Assange as an example of a netocrat hated by the establishment struggling to maintain the dying order. Respect for intellectual property (patents) is replacing the priority formerly accorded to the sanctity of private property. The gaining of "attention", defined as the product of "awareness" and "credibility", is replacing the power of money. The driving engine for this unfolding social revolution is exponential technological change. Bard asserts that philosophy is invented and history is rewritten during each paradigm to justify the monopoly of power held by the ruling class. He summarizes the history of civilization by four major revolutions in information technology: speech, writing, printing and the Internet. He predicts that the present social order will disintegrate from nation states into regional and tribal communities and simultaneously expand to global scale. He asserts that God died with feudalism and that Humanism, which is the belief in the reality and value of Individual Man, is dying with capitalism.
The above comments are some of my impressions from reading the first chapters plus watching a couple of video lectures by Bard. There are bacon bits of neologisms sprinkled throughout a polysyllabic salad of words which are not easy to grasp, as watery and empty of calories as lettuce. He mixes offensive vulgar words with highly abstract words. He is difficult to understand because his vocabulary consists of many unfamiliar words designating unfamiliar concepts. I had a similar feeling of bewilderment once when trying to understand Jean Paul Sartre's existentialist book Being and Nothingness. I traveled to Paris as a young college dropout in order to learn French in a vain attempt to understand existentialism and get some clues from it about what to do with my life. Later, when I encountered Buddhism, I learned new concepts such as karma and rebirth, and I discovered that each of the three main Buddhist schools has its own vocabulary (for example, Mahayana talks about "Buddha Nature" which is a meaningless concept from the Theravada point of view which is that there is no Self). Now I am trying to learn some of the original Pali vocabulary in order to understand what I may have missed understanding in English translation. The various English translations themselves have changed vocabulary over generations of time. I had to learn to think in Spanish while living in Costa Rica. The relationship of all the words in my personal vocabulary, slowly constructed over a lifetime, must consist of a hierarchy of concepts with more abstract words building upon lesser words. It is a miracle that people can understand each other at the level of abstract thought when even their own vocabulary is not well defined.
To understand Bard may require understanding his vocabulary. As a start in this direction, there is a glossary appended although the glossary defines terms with other terms which are also unclear. At least the important terms are listed which helps to focus attention on the concepts that need to be understood. At the same time I am also trying to estimate his credibility based on my impressions of him as a person. He has given fair warning that we are entering a era of "dividuals", therefore if he is a dividual then multiple personalities can be expected. He impresses me as having a gadfly kind of personality, a personal bias in favor of globalization and scornful of authority in general. He wears provocative short pants, an unkempt beard and discordant plaid colors as if to call attention to himself as an unconventional person tweaking the nose of the establishment which he would like to see swept away by the evolving netocracy.

The most relevant book of philosophy to this generation

So far, I've only read The Netocrats, but it's honestly the most important thing I've read in my life. If there is one person that I had to follow for the rest of my life, I would choose Alexander Bard. His rewrite of history snaps together so well. His blend of economics and social behavior seems to be a perfect extrapolation from today's society.
I cannot recommend this book enough, especially to skeptics. The Information Age is upon us and the more people who read this, the faster it will take over.

Had Alexander Bard been Brit or American, he would have been a world famous futurist. Now he is a Swedish jack of all trades; gay activist, composer and musician, and futurist. He knows how to annoy and provoke to a level with which Americans are uncomfortable. For instance bragging about being a gay prostitute in his youth is not endearing him to anyone. However, behind the surface lies a very interesting thinker. He is not a very structured thinker. It is more like he has a pulse on the future. A good observational eye. A student would hate to summarise this book because it is all over the place. That is mostly a strength, but also a weakness. The book is for instance far too long. (He also has a coauthor. I don't know anything about him.)
Here is one paraphrased statement: "What a 40 year old does not understand is that for a 20 year old the online word is the real world. Already. The interesting issue is how the young will rearrange the physical world? They seem to come together to play." You could argue that this is obvious fluff. However, if you are a politician or a businessman, chances are that you have not thought enough about the issue. Removing the tablet from your small child might not be sufficient. Dealing with cyber-addiction in 10-20 years time might be essential. Journalists and writers have a few things to pick up from the book as well. Admen will like his knowledge about pop culture.
It is unfortunate that the book is not available in hardcover, but only a rather poor quality soft cover version. For gods sake, why not spend 50 cents on some decent carton at least. 700 pages in softcover is never a good idea. Or maybe that just shows my age. In any case, this is a book that I would be proud to display in hardcover.
The authors have also written kind of a fourth volume called Syntheism - Creating God in the Internet Age. This is about the creation of spirituality for the future. However, that book I cannot recommend.
