I had hoped for more work by ibn Munqidh

Having read about the Crusades from a number of perspectives (Asbridge's The Crusades: The Authoritative History of the War for the Holy Land, and Steven Runciman The First Crusade among my favorites for a European perspective, The Crusades Through Arab Eyes and Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes for an Islamic persepctive - looking forward to In the Shadow of the Sword: The Birth of Islam and the Rise of the Global Arab Empire), I was introduced to Usama ibn Munquidh - an eyewitness to the Crusades and aide-de-camp of sorts to Saladin. His observations on the Europeans were frequently cited in many histories of the period. My curiosity piqued, I wanted to read more by him.
_Usama ibn Munqidh: warrior poet of the age of crusades_ was, I had hoped, his account of his years in Jerusalem and the Levant during the Third Crusade. Instead, it is a biography. I was disappointed. As far as biographies go, Cobb (a professor at Notre Dame) does a fantastic job - the political and social climate of the Near East in the 11th and 12th centuries was in flux - the 'Abbysid and Fatimid caliphates were crumbling, the Crusades were beginning, and there was both uncertainty and opportunity. How ibn Munqidh leveraged this for his own advancement and his obeservations of this changing world are capably shown, often with Munqidh's own words. But this isn't what I had been expecting.
That said, it is a solid read, with an abundance of background information on this fascinating figure. For the words from ibn Munqidh's own pen, try The Book of Contemplation: Islam and the Crusades (Penguin Classics)
