A Worthy Read!

The title of this book intrigued me so I gave it a shot. I'm glad I did. It's a very sophisticated crime novel set in both Turkey and Sweden. A wonderfully complex story with characters that lead interesting lives. I couldn't put it down!

Whoever translated this must have worked very cheaply

If I were a writer and my novel was translated this poorly I would consider a lawsuit. The story itself is a good one with interesting characters and an exotic location (Istanbul) and some touches of humor, but it's a real struggle to read. If written in English it would never have been published in this condition.

Badly in need of editing

The good reviews led me to buy this book, admittedly cheaply on Kindle. It was a struggle to read it, because of the extreme slowness. There are constant cheap tricks to generate suspense:
A man arrives home and says: "I have to talk to you". End of the chapter, and the conversation is actually never picked up. This woman goes foraging in an attic, finds a chest, opens it, aha! End of the chapter, wait for several others to get the story.
Then there are stories about characters we never see again, like some nurse or doctor at the hospital. Why speak of someone at length if they have nothing to do with the story? Other peripheral people are dwelt on with way too much detail. Do we have to be taken through childbirth with the detective's wife? Be told about how she nurses the baby [every hour on the hour, it seems] or her problems with her older daughter? As one of your readers said, the book should have been shortened by about 100 pages.
I also find it hard to believe that an outwardly calm person would suddenly go berserk. And that happens twice, with two different people. One of the murders also seems a gratuitous detail, to which little attention is given. Finally some central questions are never explained.
