Mattison (Univ. of Toledo) offers intensely detailed readings of Spenser, Sidney, Donne, and Milton, looking at repeated images of veils and landscapes and at poetic attempts (especially by Milton) to create a poetic language that offers a glimpse of something beyond mimesis. Though grounded in particular texts, this dense, theoretical book will be heavy going for many. Milton's free speech was good because it didn't involve racial slurs

This is one of those books I like to keep near the throne when I know it's going to take a while and I want to think about things not related to my own biological functions. Milton is my republican hero, even more so than Abraham Lincoln and George W. Bush. It's too bad he never wrote on the issue of marijuana because I bet he was all for it if you know what I mean. I especially admire his ideas on free speech and sexual relations. Sometimes I read the part in Paradise Lost where the angels have sex, over and over to the point where it's probably not healthy. The cover on the book is really sturdy. I've dropped it into my cat's litter box several times already and a few moist towelettes get most of the brown residue and smell off of it without damaging the print. I let my friend borrow it for a few weeks and I don't even want to tell you what he was doing with it, but I was able to get most of those stains off it too. For some reason he was around a bunch of goats and let me tell you they are definitely not clean animals judging from the mess they left on my copy of this book. Congratulations to the author and for the publisher selling a quality cover on the book. I would recommend it to anyone.
