a diverse anthology for the full spectrum of grief

I wasn't surprised when I heard that Bloomsbury had asked poet Kevin Young to edit an anthology of "poems of grief and healing." After all, his book, "Dear Darkness" (written following the death of the poet's father) was filled with nuanced and human poems tackling his grief & celebrating the life of his father in surprising and honest ways.

Still, "The Art of Losing" exceeded my expectations of what this collection would be.

Firstly, I had to admire the wide range of poets: works by old standards like Emily Dickson, Dylan Thomas and Robert Frost, sit next to works newly minted legends Anne Sexton, John Berryman and Frank O'Hara, which are found next to contemporary favorites like Billy Collins, Sharon Olds and Mary Oliver, which are published next to young modern poets Nick Flynn, Elizabeth Alexander and Terrance Hayes.

Next, I was grateful for the full spectrum of grief that this book showcased. The book isn't filled only with poems politely eulogizing the newly sainted dead. No: there are poems which unapologetically wrestle sadness, frustration and anger. There are poems which celebrate, which brighten, which make us laugh. There are poems about the long dead, the newly passed and the people who are fading in front of us. It's not a book reserved only for the newly grieving, but a book for anyone who has experienced a loss at any time... in other words, a book for everyone.

And lastly, I was impressed by the structure of the anthology. Young did a great job of placing the pieces together in a way that made sense, but that wasn't blatant. The poems are divided into six sections: "Reckoning," "Regret," "Remembrance," Ritual," Recovery" and "Redemption." But it is important to note that they are not divided into 'Sad Poems,' or 'Happy Poems,' or 'Funny Poems;' Nor is the book divided into 'Poems You Know,' 'Poems You Don't Know By Poets You Do Know,' or 'Poems by New Poets You've Never Heard Of.'

No, Young allows the poems themselves to dictate their place in the book, creating interesting progressions and growth within each section. Each turn of the page illuminates something new, shows another angle, fills another hole we didn't realize was there: poems grieving siblings, are next to poems mourning wives, are next to poems celebrating the lives of grandparents; poems which will make you cry are bumped right next to poems which make you laugh, which conclude with poems that will make you pause and look around you in wonder. (It should be noted that the book ends with a index which helps spotlight poems which might be appropriate for funerals, as well as indexing poems which deal with death of a parent, death of child, etc...)

Kevin Young has done an absolutely incredible job with this collection, and I highly recommend it. I am positive it will be an anthology I will continue to turn to for years and years to come.

This book is a beautiful and diverse anthology that is well deserving of any praise it is sure to receive. I would especially recommend it to anyone trying to find comfort in grieving the loss of loved one. Often grief feels solitary: no one else knows what this feels like, no one has been through it before. This book will prove to any reader that loss and pain is universal... and why not learn that lesson by reading these words and emotions so exquisitely expressed?

A Poetry of Necessity

This is an exceptional book. I am a physician whose father recently died. A friend gave me this book to help with my grief. A sentence in the introduction consoled me first: "Indeed, it is too often that death clarifies a love that was there all along." Then I read "The Race" by Sharon Olds about a woman who races to get on a flight to reach her dying father after the first flight is cancelled. I sobbed, knowing how she ached to be there with him and to feel the relief of having "walked into his room and watched his chest rise slowly and sink again, all night I watched him breathe." I am buying a copy of this book for my nurse who just lost her mother and will do this for the many behind us who will lose someone dear. I was interested to see how many poems there were on losing a father (twice as many as for the loss of a mother). Perhaps Kevin Young, having lost his father, was particularly drawn to these....or perhaps fathers are so perplexing that we need the "poetry of necessity" to guide us. Many thanks to Kevin Young for this book. (Hint to Kevin: have a place on your website for people to express their thanks.)

Build Muscle, Lose Fat, Great Resource!

101 Fat Burning Workouts & Diet Strategies is exactly as the title says. This book is a small library of workout information for anyone wanting to burn fat. Following this program, YOU WILL MELT FAT OFF OF YOUR BODY! Not only that, but the muscle building exercises will give your body a toned and lean look. I have read several books on weight lifting and fat burning but this book surpasses every other book I have read on building muscle and losing fat. This book is great for people that want to get right to it! No fluff, no boring stories, no extensive articles on the science- just what works! The style of this book is like this: "Here are workouts for every part of your body, whether you are beginner, intermediate, or advanced at working out. Then, how to lift weights to burn fat. Next, how to chisel your midsection. Next, CARDIO. Ouch, rough but absolutely necessary in burning fat but this book presents several ways to make your cardio more interesting. Next, HIIT! Next, what to eat, how often to eat, what not to eat!" By the end of the book, if you follow the program, you will make the people in your gym look ridiculous! I absolutely recommend this book to anyone that is getting into working out. I didn't give it a perfect score because a few of the exercises are not illustrated. That is a positive and a negative. Positive because it makes the book leaner and easier to carry. You can look up the exercises on the internet or through some other laboriously large muscle bound book! Negative because absolute beginners might not know how to do a barbell bench press. Most of the more uncommon movements ARE pictured. Most people that have some experience in weightlifting will navigate through this book fine.

Again, if you had to buy just one book to build muscle and lose fat, THIS should be your book. I have recently begun following this program, as of November 2009. I have also found that the recommended supplements are very helpful. God bless...

I highly recommend this book!

I am 20 years old 5'10" 170lbs and I have been lifting for 7 years. This book gave me a whole new work out to switch things up and also a diet to get the most out of what I eat. When I purchased this book I weighed just under 150lbs. Since switching to this workout I have felt burns that I have never felt before.

If you are an inexperienced lifter don't worry, every exercise in this book has a description of how to perform the exercise and almost every single one of the explanations has a picture to show you how to do the exercise as well.

I have recently put my father on the diet that is included in this book and in one month he has lost over 21 pounds (he 66 years old, 5'11", and 214lbs now).

If you're looking to gain muscle mass, lose weight, or get tone this is the book for you.

Just an example of the diversity this book has to offer here is the choices you have just for a Shoulder/Traps workout. Each workout has four different exercises, how many sets, and how many reps to perform.

Great book that turned me onto supper sets and how P90 works. My interpretation is muscle confusion that got me 3 months results in 5 weeks. I grew more muscle with less weights by doing the supper sets.

The Red Flags Are Up

This is quite an eye-opening book--even if you've been keeping up to speed with radical Islam. I had trouble getting through the first 15 chapters even though the information presented was interesting. My problem was that there were so many Arabic names mentioned that there was no way to keep track of who was doing what. The later chapters were much more enjoyable because the authors started revealing the Islamic infiltration into our government. And just so there are no accusations that this is a right-wing hatchet piece, both parties have been hoodwinked for decades by misleading Islamic tactics although Jimmy Carter comes across as the biggest fool of all the government officials mentioned. After reading this book, my biggest fear is that I don't see any way to stop this quest for a worldwide caliphate.

The Case for Islamophobia

This book is written by a former Palestinian Muslim who documents the true nature of Islam that every American needs to read for his or her own future welfare. Walid Shoebat convincingly shows that Islam, with its intent of conquering the West and to place it under Sharia Law, has deeply infiltrated the West, including the United States. This book portrays a real phobia, not an imaginary one, that every American should also have. Only the politically correct and the uninformed will ignore this book at their own peril.

I believe Shoebat is closer to the truth with his interpretation of end time events than anyone I've heard of. He grew up in Israel. One has to know the culture behind the writings to accurately interpret them.

Don't get the Kindle version! Its the wrong book.

I resolved the concern by buying the kindle version of the hardback... I am not sure why that worked, but somehow the regular kindle version, offered for $20 is a different book. However the $35 version linked to the hardback version is the correct ebook. I hope that helps.

good work and the autor has well exploited the sources. What is lacking is a more detailes description of the structural context that allowes the chief of the eunucs to exerce a considerable power.
