The Challenge of a Soufflé

While soufflés are light and airy, Soufflé certainly is not. Soufflés are notoriously difficult to bake successfully, to rise and not collapse, and require attention and repeated attempts.

Each of the 3 main characters in Perker’s novel lives in a different part of the world: A New York suburb, Paris, and Istanbul, but they all have something in common: Loss and huge challenges. Each finds a degree of comfort in retreating to the kitchen and attempting to successfully bake a soufflé, a metaphor for their trials.

Asli Perker is a Turkish writer and this is her first novel to be translated into English. (She did the translation herself.) I found it via NPR Books' #Friday Reads Facebook page.

As Courtney waits in jail, Sarah decides at the request of her older son, Nate, to take on the foster care of Jordan, with all its painful ramifications. Child sexual abuse is hard to read about and Kittle sometimes gets a little heavy-handed with her facts and statistics. But told through the perspectives of Sarah, Nate, Danny, and Jordan, this is ultimately an attractive story of ordinary people trying to make the best of an awful situation and finding the healing power of love and forgiveness in the process. I had little idea what this book was truly about when I picked it up but I am glad I did. I loved it. LOVED IT!!!! As a therapist I work with children who have been sexually abused and I also work with sexual offenders. The author did her homework people! It was accurate and I have a deep appreciation for the realism and not the sensationalized versions I so often see in fictional books. I was in supsense, sick to my stomach, angry, saddened, relieved, and touched by the entire book. I lost sleep but not because I was thinking but because I couldn't put the book down! If I never read another book again I can be proud I read this one. AMAZING!!!

I actually read this book last year, but never got around to doing the amazon review. KINDNESS OF STRANGERS was one of my favorite books from 2006, a book that some will find the subject matter a little hard to take. It centers on one family, and a boy that they take in because his parents are accused of sexually abusing him. The story is something out of today's sordid headlines, but I felt the author did a good job at telling the story and keeping the focus on the family and the boy, and not on the actual acts that were committed on the boy and many others.

The story begins in the present in happier times. But then the reader is taken back to the past with the story of Jordan, the young boy that is being abused, as well as the story of Sarah Laden and her family, and how they cope with the death of their father. They are already going through a lot before they take in Jordan, a boy they had known for a long time but never knew what went on behind closed doors.

What makes things worse is that Sarah had been best friends with the next door neighbors, and to learn of the possibility of sexual abuse was something Sarah refused to believe.

THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS was such an engaging novel that I finished it one day. The viewpoints alternate between various characters, giving the reader different sides to the story. Well-written with characters that felt realistic and three dimensional, I highly recommend this book.

Amazing from beginning to end

Katrina Kittle can write. In addition to a fantastic plot and expert pacing, she gives us dialogue that reads like the way people really talk. It's particularly refreshing to experience eleven-year-old characters who, though intelligent, actually talk like eleven-year-olds and not like very short adults.

Please don't avoid this book because of its disturbing subject matter. THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS is well worth it.

As a geezer let me tell you that i HAVE learned to play
my new Les Paul electric guitar using this series of
lesson books....books 1 through 3 & the BLUES book as well.

Book 1, will get you actually reading sheet music and
playing it. Mission accomplished.

I wish I would have learned guitar about 5 or 6 decades ago.

Once a month, Frankenstein, Cyclops, Vlad, Medusa, and others fill the barbershop chairs after midnight strikes, and the boy (who never breaks the rules and NEVER leaves the house alone) stands atop a ladder or chair, and–clad in monster slippers, pj's, and "shamp-ewww"-filled pockets–competently gives each customer a new do. His version of the shop is a bit different: the photos are flipped to portraits of various creeps, and his equipment is a mite strange, too: “The rotting tonic, horn polish, and stink wax go on the counter. The shamp-ewww goes next to the sink.” Every monster presents a challenge: the wolfman requires heavy-duty shears, Medusa’s snakes require intricate braiding, and the skeleton—well, it’s tough to know what some customers want. McElligott’s ink, pencil, and digital illustrations are more subdued than most picture-book monster tributes, which gives this a pleasantly fuzzy, after-hours feel. From the bizarre creature creations to the gently colored backgrounds, there is a lot of care and heart put into this package, which makes it stand out in a crowd of overly zany Franks and Dracs. Fun, Funny, Bright and Cheerful

"Even Monsters Need Haircuts" is a fun picture book targeted to second graders and younger. The story is about a boy whose father is a town barber. Imitating his father, the boy has his own barber shop...of a different sort. Once a month, accompanied by his customer Vlad (as in Vlad Dracula), the the barbershop serves only monsters.

His customers include classic monsters like Frankenstein (he gets a flat top), Wolfman (not an easy cut), and others like a skeleton (the boy has trouble figuring out what to do with this one). My 6-year-old's favorites were Cyclops and Medusa.

At the end of the night, the boy and his friends put everything away, including the rotting tonic, horn polish, and especially the shamp-e[...]

The art is colorful, bright and cheerful. The monsters are cartoonish and friendly, so there's no concern of any overt fright.

The book would be a perfect Halloween time purchase.

Great Simple Story for Fans of Monsters

This is a very simple story with the basic plot being a child sneaks out to his father's barber shop on the full moon every month, where every monster knows, he will cut their hair for them. Only this time after giving most of the monsters in the shop at trim a new customer arrives, a human man. What will the boy do, he's never cut the hair of a normal human before?

The book works well due to just how simple it is. The illustrations mostly tell the story with the text referring to the pictures. Most monsters aren't mentioned by name either so it's a good one to point to and educate your child on the folklore of most of the world's most famous monsters. Some of the jokes in the illustrations might need to be explained such as the boy turning away while wearing a blindfold from Medusa's hair of snakes so he won't turn to stone. The illustrations like the text are simple and really well drawn. Any child who loves monsters will want to read this!

This book, third in a series, is delightful. Both the 4 year old and 8 year old love the books. The humor in text combined with fantastic illustrations make a winning combination!!!

Decent summary of a variety of workout options

If you are looking for one book that has all the answers, you will never find it. If you are looking for a well-organized, basic, concise summary of a variety of training methods without too much scientific theory, this book is worth the money. If terms like EDT, interval training, Tabata, and supersets are new to you, then you will learn something. If your fitness bookshelf is crowded, this book may not teach you anything new. Beginners will also enjoy the exercise section and the nutrition and supplement guides. Beginners will also enjoy the workout variety--working out is certainly more fun if you add some variety. I don't know if the book actually contains 101 workouts, but it does contain a number of unique routines.

Even if you don't follow a specific program exactly (I rarely do), you should find some techniques that you could incorporate into your own routine.

Personally, I am continually looking for variety to keep my workouts interesting and effective, and I enjoy reading books to learn and to get different viewpoints; therefore, since the price is right, I think this book is worthwhile.

Very Helpful Exercise Book

I have a few workout books and this one is a good companion. I love that it offered some new exercises i hadn't tried before. The charts are easy to understand and follow. What's very helpful is all the exercises in the book are indexed in the back with full descriptions. They don't show photos for all the exercises, but it's easy to comprehend, and I've already added some new routines to my workouts. Book is definitely worth the $10 i paid.

Great Buy

This book has routines for everyone. 30 minute workout (there are 6 different workouts) section is great for those needing to manage their time but still want a great workout. The whole book is a must read for begginers and experts alike. Use it to get started or break through your plateaus!
I followed the 20/10 workout and lost one inch from my waist and put on visible muscle mass in just two weeks! Diet and supplement guide is very helpful and a great companion to the workouts. Great buy, as usual Muscle and Fitness has put out a great manual for getting fit.
