About the Author
Dr. Ridha Arem is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He is also Chief of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston. In addition to teaching medical students and physicians-in-training, he regularly speaks to primary-care physicians and specialists at various educational programs. Dr. Arem is a nationally recognized thyroid specialist. For the past ten years he has been the author and editor of Clinical Thyroidology, a well respected widely read periodical publication for physicians on thyroid disorders. He also contributes to Thyroid USA, the official newsletter of the American Foundation of Thyroid Patients, and participates in patient education programs.

Pretty Good--3 1/2 Stars

I read this book, The Thyroid Solution by Ridha Arem, many months ago, so some of my specific recollections are a little hazy, but I do remember thinking that overall it was pretty good--a solid 3 1/2 stars. (I rounded up to four even though it isn't quite up to that.) But even though it's pretty good and worth reading, there were a few respects in which it disappointed.

Dr. Arem's thorough yet understandable exposition of the thyroid, how it works in concert with other bodily systems and organs, and the wide-ranging consequences of deviations from optimal functioning relative to health and well-being is sufficient in and of itself to justify recommendation of this book.

Moreover, Dr. Arem is head and shoulders above the all-too-typical McMedicine types who robotically prescribe Synthroid based only on TSH reference ranges. For example, Dr. Arem recognizes that some patients are unable to convert adequate T3 from T4, so he frequently prescribes T3. And he also recognizes that some people will have to be pushed lower than others on the TSH to really feel good.

Disappointingly, he strongly resists using natural, desiccated whole thyroid in favor of synthetics for reasons that aren't entirely convincing (e.g., that the natural ones aren't sufficiently standardized). In fact, his antipathy toward natural (e.g., Armour) thyroid is so great that he tries to migrate his patients who are already taking it to other "better" synthetics. Perhaps some of his patients would do better if he were more willing to prescribe whole thyroid. For whatever reason(s), some patients respond better (from the patient's perspective) to whole thyroid than even the T4/T3 combo. My impression from reading Dr. Arem's book was that unless a patient came in already on whole natural thyroid, they would be extremely unlikely to be encouraged to try it.

I didn't like the way he spoke slightly dismissively of pioneers such as Broda Barnes as if what he did was OK for the time, but now that we're out of the Stone Age it's time to get sophisticated. (He wasn't as disrespectful as the way I just stated it, but that was substantially the drift.) To some extent this attitude is understandable. Dr. Arem and most other modern practitioners rely heavily on lab/blood results (which weren't available to clinicians of earlier times), but one wonders if modern reliance on the labs sometimes detrimentally takes precedence when in conflict with clinical symptoms.

His overly cautious thoughts regarding iodine supplementation are likely to be unhelpful for at least some patients. While acknowledging its importance, he's inordinately concerned that people will take too much. (There is evidence that the problem is overwhelmingly in the other direction: many people suffer because they ingest too little; his worries will probably scare some from taking enough iodine to help themselves.)

Basically, my impression is that Dr. Arem is a very competent medical professional with more empathy for his patients than a typical doc (which isn't saying much, unfortunately). He's probably more completely successful with a higher proportion of thyroid patients than most endocrinologists (based on his prescribing of T3 inter alia). Similarly, it is likely that his book will be helpful to most who are seeking solutions to thyroid issues. But there will still be a few who should wish the "Stone Age" Broda Barnes were still around. (Barnes is gone, but his writings are still here and there are some clinicians who've continued to blaze his trail and who could help at least some of those for whom Dr. Arem's approach proves to be less than ideal.)

Go ahead, read this book and be prepared to find it helpful. For many, this book will be enough. But if it doesn't get you 100% to where you need to be, don't think it's the last word.

This book saved my life.

After receiving radioactive iodine therapy for hyperthyroidism, I experienced a near-complete emotional and mental breakdown soon after: I could not stop crying; I had vivid, violent nightmares; it was extremely difficult to get up in the morning; I had no control over my emotions, and I picked fights with my boyfriend almost constantly. The "possible slight depression" I was warned about in hypothyroid pamphlets from my doctor was much different than what I was experiencing... In my mind, I was going crazy--and I didn't know what to do. A friend came across this book and it was only then that I realized my symptoms were related to severe hypothyroidism and I went in to see my doctor sooner.

My RAI treatment had taken effect very quickly and my thyroid levels were extremely low, which explained my symptoms. Doctors like to warn you that you may "gain weight," an easy physical symptom, but they do not warn you that you may feel like you are losing your mind.

I have struggled with thyroid disease for 18 years, having a sub-total thyroidectomy in my teens for hyperthyroidism, only to have the disease recur in my early thirties. The endocrinologists I have seen during this time treated me based on my TSH, T3 and T4 levels from blood tests--but they never explained to me the level at which my emotional and mental health depends on the balance of these levels. I realize now how dangerous it is to give patients incomplete information.

This book connects the endocrine system to the whole person: the physical, mental and emotional health, with the physical, mental and emotional everyday life of the patient. Without an understanding and an explanation to the patient of these synergies, medicinal treatment alone becomes inadequate and the patient suffers.

If you have thyroid disease or plan to undergo RAI or surgery for treatment, please prepare yourself and read this book. You'll be glad you did.

Thyroid advice seems sound

Pros: He does a good job of explaining the relationship between the thyroid and conditions that are often thought to be psychological. He gives medical treatment advice that seems good and original (although since I never tried it and am not a doctor, I can't say more than that).

He also discusses ways to manage the situation where, once the thyroid becomes functional, the body doesn't catch up and the symptoms don't go away immediately.

The book seems comprehensive in terms of thyroid problems.

Cons: His diet advice seemed self-contradictory and arbitrary. He says that controlling calories and exercising more doesn't work in the real world for losing weight, and then advises controlling calories and exercising for losing weight and gives a basic 'intro to exercise' exercise plan. (As someone who has been overweight much of my life, I find it demeaning when someone assumes that because you are overweight you don't exercise, and one might assume that someone motivated enough to read a book about thyroids might already have figured exercise.)

Given that the trend nowadays is to promote saturated fats as a healthy alternative to vegetable oils such as canola or safflower, and many people do well with that both for thyroids and weight loss, I was surprised at his insistence on not eating saturated fats. It seemed like he was just repeating popular belief about what is "healthy".

Similarly, he encourages the reader to eat soy, and then comments it MAY have deleterious effects on the thyroid. Maybe it's just me, but if I were reading a book because I had a thyroid problem, and someone said a food MAY cause a problem, well, I wouldn't want to eat it. You know.

Lastly, as a female, I found his comments on the female reproductive urge and what women "really want" in that department to be somewhat bemusing and cliche.

All in all...it seems it is useful for his area of specialization - diagnosis and treatment of thyroid problems, as well as managing psychological effects - but I'd recommend taking the rest with a grain of salt.

Lewis to Lemony Snicket (2011, both ALA) as it is written more as a guide for parents than for librarians. The books are organized by format: picture books, easy readers, chapter books (fiction), poetry collections, and graphic novels and manga. Excellent resource for parents with kids who love to laugh!

With a large selection of picture books, and a good selection of chapter books, easy readers, poetry and graphic novels, this guide gives readers snapshots of so many great ideas to get kids into books. Make it fun and you'll see lots more reding happen. It was easy to find many titles available in my local library's system, too.

Great Help for Tests and Essays

This audio Cliffs Notes on the Adventures of Huck Finn does its job very well. Any high school or college student that needs to study for a test or write a paper about Huck Finn will benefit from these CDs. I have already read the book, but these CDs reminded of several themes and characterizations that I had missed or forgotten. The chapter summaries are great reminders of the plot line. The instructions suggest listening to the CDs after reading the book. But Mark Twain uses 19th century Southern idioms that most of us would miss. These CDs contain a glossary at the end of each chapter summary, so I think the listener will get more out of the book by listening to the plot summary and glossary for each chapter before reading it. Using the audio format is especially useful for a commuter student who can use his driving time to listen to these CDs to plan a paper or review for a test.

The commentary makes clear why this book is considered by many to be the best novel ever written in America. Not only is it funny, but much of the black humor is actually severe criticism of Southern white culture and racism both before and after the Civil War.

I only have one thematic quarrel with the comments. The commenter seems to think that Huck's conscience is formed by his culture, but he then fails to explain why Huck rebels in order to do the right thing. It is easier to assume that we and Huck are born with an innate sense of right and wrong, which we Catholics would say is formed by Natural Law. But as we grow up, a society can pervert our innate conscience, so Huck comes to believe it is wrong to free a slave. But his innate conscience tells him to do the right thing, to help Jim escape slavery; even though his society says it is wrong.

Whatever Gets You Back on the River

I ain't sure I agree with everything those Cliffs Notes people said in analyzin' my book 'bout me 'n Jim but that ain't no matter. There was things they stretched, but mainly they tole the truth. I learnt an awful lot 'bout life on that raft but I ain't sure I was thinking the things they said I was. Course, if I was taking a test 'bout that book an' answering educational kinda questions, I might need those Cliffs Notes people - they don't mean no harm by it.

Bein' on the river an' being with Jim taught me a lot, but not the kinda stuff them college perfessers are wantin' to know. They wanna say the raft on the river was a safe place whereas once we got off the river it warn't - and that warn't cuz there was something wrong with the riverbank country. It was probly just as nice as the river seppin' for the people - that's where the trouble always started. I told 'bout what non-common-sensical things them people did and how they fought each other over nuttin' an 'bout how easy they was to trick. Sometimes it was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race - but I was just lookin' at the bad part. They warn't so bad, but they warn't near as smart as Jim. He saw thru the stupid things the very smartest people did - like he saw right thru King Sollermun.

Me and Jim had a big argument 'bout Sollermun 'n now I see he was probly right - Like I wrote 'bout Sollermun, "I tho't he WAS the wisest man, anyway; because the widow she told me so, her own self."

Jim tole me, "I doan k'yer what de widder say, he WARN'T no wise man nuther. He had some er de dad-fetchedes' ways I ever see. Does you know 'bout dat chile dat he 'uz gwyne to chop in two?"

"Yes, the widow told me all about it."

"WELL, den! Warn' dat de beatenes' notion in deworl'? You jes' take en look at it a minute. Dah's de stump, dah -- dat's one er de women; heah's you-- dat's de yuther one; I's Sollermun; en dish yer dollar bill's de chile. Bofe un you claims it. What does I do? Does I shin aroun' mongs' de neighbors en fine out which un you de bill DO b'long to, en han' it over to de right one, all safe en soun', de way dat anybody dat had any gumption would? No; I take en whack de bill in TWO, en give half un it to you, en de yuther half to de yuther woman. Dat's de way Sollermun was gwyne to do wid de chile. Now I want to ast you: what's de use er dat half a bill? -- can't buy noth'n wid it. En what use is a half a chile? I wouldn' give a dern for a million un um."

"But I tell you you don't get the point."

"Blame de point! De 'spute warn't 'bout a half a chile, de 'spute was 'bout a whole chile; en de man dat think he kin settle a 'spute 'bout a whole chile wid a half a chile doan' know enough to come in out'n de rain. I reck'n I knows what I knows. En mine you, de real pint is down furder--it's down deeper. You take a man dat's got on'y one or two chillen; is dat man gwyne to be waseful o' chillen? No, he ain't; he can't 'ford it. He know how to value 'em. But you take a man dat's got 'bout five million chillen runnin' roun' de house, en it's diffunt. He as soon chop a chile in two as a cat. Dey's plenty mo'. A chile er two, mo' er less, warn't no consekens to Sollermun, dad fatch him!"

I argued with Jim 'bout how he missed the point by a thousand mile - but now I ain't so sure.

I'm the same way 'bout Cliffs Notes. Lately I been laying off comfortable all day, smoking and fishing, no books nor study, and no Miss Watson peckin' at me all the time. If you gotta answer some questions from them perfessers, I think Jim would say to either talk to him directly, which ain't likely - or get yourself some Cliffs Notes. If you do that you can get yourself right back on that raft on the river a lot quicker.

For fifty years prison inmates in Texas were leased out to railroads, coal mines, farm plantations, and sawmill crews with terrible incidences of brutality, cruelty, injury, and death to the prisoners.
They were forced to produce daily work quotas of seven tons of coal, three hundred pounds of cotton, or one and one-half cords of wood. They were fed spoiled hog meat and slept on mattresses filled with bugs and filthy from sweat, blood, and dirt. They were punished by brutal whippings with an instrument known as the "bat" and by various other methods. Self-mutilation by cutting off fingers, hands, and feet and even self-blinding were commonplace to avoid working in these lease camps.
It was a period in which the state prison system was shrouded in secrecy. Former prisoners had only one option available to try to inform the public about the brutality and corruption. They could write their personal memoirs. And an amazing number of them did—dating back to the 1870s. Herein are some of their stories.

His book Singin' a Lonesome Song: Texas Prison Tales is a collection of stories about colorful characters who have served time in Texas prisons over the past 150 years. His other books include Volunteers in the Texas Revolution: The New Orleans Greys and Hesitant Martyr in the Texas Revolution: James Walker Fannin. He resides in Friendswood, Texas.

I spent 11 months there in 1978. Just 10? or so years after they High Riders stopped carry whips in the
field. I was at Wyndham right before my release, my cell mate's jail name was RIver Jack he'd been down so
many times, an inmate in the 50's and 60's he was part of the voluntary 'experiments' that administration performed
by way of Fed Gov't i'm pretty sure, he said he was given numerous drugs etc... really messed him up.

he also said if you 'fell out' from the heat working in the fields the best you could hope for was that they would
drag you under a water wagon.

Every farm had a small cemetery, for inmates that died there and had no family.

When I went down in 1978, the prison employees routinely ripped open, read and searched inmate mail. While I was there we had a system wide work stoppage due to several issues, poor to non existent medical, nasty unclean food that literally only a dog would eat, etc... many of our hoe squads 'laid it down' and refused to work. they were rehoused, and that night goon squads went block to block pulling inmates out of there cells, inmates who were burning stuff ripping up matresses etc.... gassed the whole blocks, and beat inmates.

the next morning ... would give most anything for a smartphone video then... guards went to each field work block one at a time and formed a gauntlet, the inmates had to run the gauntlet before they were taken out and put to work In field again, that day.
there was lots of bloody white's, and beaten inmates.
images burned into my brain.

I read about half the book and could not finish, brought back memories, to real.

now the farms are infested with gangs.

Texas Gulag should be required reading in middle school, That would be a deterrent for many.

... and before the horrors of the Gulag Archipelago, there were equally horrific forced labor camps in 19th Century Tsarist Russia, out there in frozen Siberia, as described in painful honesty by Fydor Dostoevsky in the House of the Dead. But historical honesty requires me to mention the chain gang prison labor atrocities of the American South during the apartheid era from the end of the Civil War to the advent of Civil Rights. No author of Solzehenitsyn's or Dostoevsky's stature has written about the chain gangs, which were largely populated by African-Americans, but a surprising number of the survivors of such abuse wrote memoirs of various lengths and literary qualities. Those memoirs are the basis of the book Texas Gulag, which I read several years ago but haven't been able to forget.

One has to wonder what grueling tales might be written by the survivors of the torture camp at Guantanamo.

Passport to Success is a must read not only for school administrators, board members, faculty and staff, but also public and private corporate ceo's, department level and team managers, employees, small business owners, hospital administrators, military organization leaders, colleges and university leaders, and other complex organizations such as churches and their leaders. The book is an easy read, and is packed full of practical and useful information for those wishing to plan, develop, and implement either an organization, department, team-level, or personal strategic plan. This is a five star rated book in my opinion and well worth the price.
