Milton Magness: Milton Magness, D. Min., MA, LPC, CSAT, is the founder and director of Hope & Freedom Counseling Services in Houston. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist. He served five terms as president of the Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health (SASH), the international professional organization for sexual addiction therapists. Dr. Magness has led national workshops on cybersex addiction and has conducted a multi-state research study that focused on cybersex behavior and recovery among self-identified sex addicts. Prior to becoming a therapist he was a pastor for twenty years. He holds the following advanced degrees: Doctor of Ministry from Luther Rice Seminary, Master of Arts in Psychology from Houston Baptist University, and Master of Arts in Religious Education from Southwestern Seminary. Dr. Magness is a native of Houston, TX, where he resides.

Thoughts from a recovered sex addict

By reading the other reviews, I can see that I am clearly going to be an outlying dissident but I found this book and Mr. Magness' approach unlike any other I've seen and I have to share my honest thoughts.

Let me start by saying that I have experienced the pain, horror, and despair of sex addiction, and my wife has experienced the trauma of infidelity. I can say without qualification that I am completely responsible for my acts and I can never make up for the pain that I've caused my wife. I love her more than anything, and I am committed to rebuilding our marriage and the trust between us and so far, with the help of God and people around us, we are moving forward.

With this backdrop, it would seem that a book called "Stop Sex Addiction" would appear to be incredibly relevant to me and I was excited to dig into it when I received it from my church's counseling center. Unfortunately I quickly fount that Mr. Magness' book is not only completely counterproductive to any success of a sex addict recovering from his addiction, but I can't imagine how a marriage that experienced the trauma of this recovery program could ever survive.

Like most addictions, sex and pornography addiction is a way to escape from reality. This need for escape is typically developed during the formative years as a result of a trauma such as emotional or physical abuse. Unique to sex and pornography addiction is the overwhelming sense of shame, guilt and self-hatred accompanying the disease. The self perpetuating cycle of the shame from the acting out behavior driving further acting out brings the addict to a level of despair that only someone who has experienced it could understand. That is all to say, the addict has enough shame and guilt to deal with without a recovery program piling on him even more.

Mr. Magness' program revolves around a "disclosure" which involves a polygraph and three days of brutal interrogation between Mr. Magness, and the husband and wife, with periodic breaks for tears and physical illness. In case the addict doesn't already feel enough shame and self loathing around his or her behavior, Mr. Magness makes sure that he/she is adequately chastised in the book and presumably during the disclosure itself. An excerpt from page 186-187 - A note to the Male Sex Addict: "I do not think it is possible for male sex addicts to ever fully appreciate the depth of the pain inflicted on their partners.... The pain that you have inflicted may be deeper than if you had physically beaten her up. The damage you have inflicted with your penis is worse than any harm you could cause with your fists. So how do you feel about yourself? Are you proud of what you have done to her?" This is the tone set throughout the entire book and recovery system.

As I noted above, I own my actions, and similar to other sex addicts who hurt the one they love more than anything in the world, I hated myself for what I did. I had a lengthy period where I was obsessed with suicidal thoughts. I went through every possible scenario in my head in how to limit my wife's pain at any cost to myself, even if it meant taking my own life. The first step in recovering my marriage was recovering from sex addiction. The first step in my recovery from sex addiction was not hating myself. Now that I am further along in recovery I can see that living in the pain and hell of self loathing would result in nothing but more addictive behavior. The desperation and helplessness is utterly indescribable. Mr. Magness' approach of healing the wife through fueling the man's self hatred is appalling and utterly horrifying.

Three years after the affair, I'm living a life of freedom from addiction and joy in my marriage. I have a circle of other sex addicts to keep me accountable, my wife and I love each other more than we ever have before, and we're excited about what God holds in store for our future. Not only have we restored trust in our marriage, but we've done it without creating more pain through a recovery process. I sincerely urge anyone who reads this review to seek another form of recovery. Start with Carnes and a 12 step program. But don't feel like you have to further torture yourself to recover your marriage. God bless you through you and your spouse's recovery.

Sex Addiction Stopped!

Milton Magness gets it. In his latest book, Dr. Magness provides an easy, yet highly informative read for anyone struggling with sex addiction. Hundreds of case examples illustrate the horifying breadth of this addiction in "real-life" form. Dr. Magness' vast experience in the field is quite evident from the start. The book is comprehensive yet surprisingly free of dry, clinical jargon and "overpontification". There is definitely a sense that the author deeply wants to assist in freeing readers from the grip of sex addiction and is clear about the steps needed to do so. The book is also helpful to partners of sex addicts with multiple chapters addressing partners and couples. I highly recommend this book to everyone: sex addict, possible addict, family member, spouse or friend - everyone who reads it will benefit one way or another. Thank you Milton!

Sex addiction can be stopped and relationships restored

Dr. Magness does a great job of talking about what sex addiction is, and how to begin to stop. The book does a great job of validating the partner feelings that this is not there fault and gives reassurance that the relationship and trust can be restored.

This book is a must read for both the addict and the spouse. Dr Magness talks about how disclosure will bring trust back to the relationship, and other ways to build trust.

The book also gives helpful case examples that give understanding to the addict that they are not alone and to the partner that they are validated in their feelings. Also the spouse can supplement the book with an online video course to help heal.

About the Author
Dr. Rosalind LaRocque is a 25-year veteran teacher with experience gained as the chair of the Language Arts Department, one of the first five master teachers in the district, and occasionally as a member of the Middle States Accreditation committee and the Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Evaluation (NCATE). Currently, Dr. LaRocque works developing professional development modules for training educators in Washington, D.C. with the American Federation of Teachers in the Educational Issues Department.

this book was disappointing most of the cake recipes call for some unnamed brand of white or yellow cake mix and about one third of the book contains how to construct car and teddy bear shaped cakes. I was hoping this book contained recipes that were to be made from scratch, this was not the case. The pictures are nice and the instructions are easy to follow. however, the cakes were kind of "out there" and the fancier cakes call for boxed cake mix.......

Awesome Recipes that Make Baking Cakes Easy

Interesting recipes. Just wish so many of them did not require Betty Crocker cake mixes. I prefer making them from scratch. However, I was able to make a yummy peppermint cake by improvising a white cake and just adding the rest of the recipe as I went along.

Good basic book, it has recipes for box cakes which I would not use but I guess it gives you options. Nice pictures. It's not a Rose Leavy Berembaum book, but if you already know how to bake from scratch, it gives you ideas for variations. Definitely not enough a book on technique, just recipes.

A mediocre introduction to Slavery in Colonial America

Slavery in Colonial America, 1619-1776 is about slavery. The thesis is "This book, which is intended for those coming to the subject for the first time, will examine the main themes that have emerged from this new research." The author also mentions the themes of the book when she says, "We begin by examining the ways in which racial ideologies, religious beliefs, and economic self-interest interacted in the different physical environments of the North American mainland to produce systems of slavery that were both similar and dissimilar." The author also refers to the impact of the Revolutionary War when she says, "The outcome of that war, and the political settlements of the 1780s, would help to seal the fate of African Americans for decades to come." This book is about how slavery changed the colonies in terms of economic demands influencing racial ideology (vii & xi).

This book is about slavery in colonial America with a focus on the slavery institution itself. England was influenced by Spain and Portugal for economic opportunities in the new world. Slaves were brought into the colonies for cheap labor. Slaves converted to Christianity through time and eventually gave up their ancient ritual beliefs, but their conversion to Christianity did not allow them to obtain their freedom. Wood also goes into the brutal aspects of slavery. Slave owners used branding irons on slaves' chests to identify to whom they belonged to. Slaves were also whipped when they disobeyed their master. If a slave attempted to run away and was caught, the slave owner might attach a chain with an iron ball attached to him or her, which would prevent the slave from running away. Slavery was organized in two different systems in the 1730s and 1740s; the Chesapeake area used the gang system and Carolina used the task system. The book also explains the impact of the rebellions that were always unsuccessful and became less common as years passed through colonial times. A slave might earn his or her freedom if he or she revealed a slave rebellion. Britain tried to use runaway slaves to their advantage during the American Revolution by offering them freedom in exchange for military service. The Revolutionary War ended and answered the question of whether or not slaves would obtain freedom by the slave institution remaining intact, which would later become an argument and finally be resolved in a half a century later with the result of the American Civil War. This book explores the slave institution and the inability of slaves to achieve their freedom.
This book has some credibility. The author uses a lot of primary sources in this book, such as journals and legal documents. The primary sources provide first hand accounts of the colonial era of slavery, which she lists in the Documents section. The author relies on her own interpretation from the primary sources most of the time instead of also using secondary sources to add more expertise. The author does use some secondary sources. This book lacks some credibility because the author does not use a bibliography section for the sources she used. The author also does not use endnotes, which makes information hard to check for accuracy. This book has some credibility because of the primary and secondary sources that are used.

Slavery in Colonial America, 1619-1776 is different from other books in its genre because it deals with several different topics and themes of slavery in each chapter. Slavery in Colonial America, 1619-1776 and The Time of Their Lives by James Deetz and Patricia Scott Deetz are similar in that they focus on a different topic in each chapter that do not necessarily follow the next chapter. Both books have a different perspective. The Time of Their Lives is from an archaeologist's perspective because it focuses on culture and Slavery in Colonial America, 1619-1776 is from a historian's perspective because it focuses on cause and effect. Wood also organizes her chapters by topics and each chapter is in chronological order instead of culture characteristic. The Deetzs' book mentions indentured servitude, which was similar to slavery because both were a form of bondage. The Time of Their Lives and Slavery in Colonial America, 1619-1776 have a similar explanation for the motive of bondage because they both emphasize it as a way for cheap labor.

This book has effective explanations. The author explains the problems she encounters in finding certain information. The author demonstrates this by saying, "The main problem in attempting to unravel the dynamics of reworking of traditional beliefs and rituals in different regions of mainland America, and forms that they eventually took, is the lack of sources. Autobiographies and other materials written by former slaves only began to appear during the second half of the eighteenth century, which means that for the entire colonial period there are only white accounts of varying degrees of objectivity." This explains the difficulties of attaining accurate primary sources because of the whites' bias towards slaves. The author is also good at explaining the effect that performing a certain action would have on both whites and slaves. She demonstrates the effect of putting rebellious slaves' heads on a pike by saying, "To slaves they provided an unmistakable example of the price they would pay for rebellion. To whites they suggested the ever-present possibility of rebellion and the need for them to be always on their guard." This book is good at explaining the availability of accurate sources and the effects of certain actions (49 & 64).

This book does have some negatives to it, which causes it to be a mediocre book. Some of her word choices are not effective enough. The author often uses the terms "whites and slaves" when she writes about the effect of putting slaves' heads on pikes. This is an ineffective way of presenting information by inferring that all whites would be affected by a slave uprising when she also mentions that effective slave uprisings were the result of slaves uprising with lower class whites. The only whites that would be reminded of the consequences are the slaveholders. The author also tries to cover a lot of information in a short amount of pages. For example, the author mentions Adam Smith's Wealth of Nation briefly without explaining the book's main argument on the economics of slavery. This book lacks important information and the author should have expanded on her ideas more (64).

Betty Wood has the credentials to write this book. She teaches history at the University of Cambridge and she is in the American history department with her area of study in continental slavery. The University of Cambridge is one of the top colleges in the United Kingdom. She has also written other books on slavery. Her notable title is The Origins of American Slavery: Freedom and Bondage in the American Colonies. Her expertise on the subject gives her the credentials to write this book.
Slavery in Colonial America, 1619-1776 is a mediocre book by an author with the proper credentials who provides an introductory to the concept of slavery. Despite the negatives of the book, this book also gives a good general summary of slavery. This book also explores the cause and effect slavery had in the colonies, and how the slavery concept became a racial issue and took years until people started questioning it as an evil. The book is also an easy read because it does not have a lot of pages. Overall this is a mediocre book that students should consider reading to have an introductory of slavery in colonial times because of the lack of information.

Good summary of slavery, but her theories are a little iffy.

The light in which slavery is commonly looked at in the United States is as a precursor to the American Civil War; however, British historian Betty Wood takes a different approach to the institution in the book Slavery in Colonial America, 1619-1776. In this text, Wood takes a look at slavery in the colonies and it's implications on the American Revolution, as opposed to the Civil War. Wood proclaims that Slavery in Colonial America is intended to be a book "for those coming to the subject for the first time"(p. vii); a beginners guide to American slavery.

The first part of the book deals with why Africans were chosen as the preferred race of slaves. Author's purpose in writing this book is to show the reader that the colonists in America decided upon African slaves as the basis for the institution based on race, rather than economy. This theory is a little shaky and outdated. It completely disregards the fact that freed blacks also owned African slaves. It is hard as an outsider to look into American society and see anything other than racial tensions, but in early colonial America race was not the most important factor; Christianity most probably trumped race.

During the second part of the book, Wood focuses on the question: "could the American Patriots who were demanding their own freedom, and resting their case for that freedom on natural rights and equality of all mankind, legitimately hold 20 percent of the colonial population in perpetual, heritable slavery?" Wood goes into detail to explain how the compromise allowing slavery was labored over in colonial America. She briefs over the American Revolution and focuses on the role of the enslaved people in the conflict, both as aid to the colonists and as aid to the British. Wood shows how the American Revolution and the continuance of slavery shaped the future of the nation.

Betty Wood hails from Great Britain and is currently a reader in American history at the University of Cambridge. She has a PhD in history and focuses on slavery, race and gender issues in colonial America. In addition to Slavery in Colonial America, Wood published Slavery in Colonial Georgia, 1730-1775 in 1984, Women's Work, Men's Work: The Informal Slave Economies of Lowcountry Georgia, 1750-1830 in 1995, The Origins of American Slavery: The English Colonies, 1607-1700 in 1997 and Gender, Race and Rank in a Revolutionary Age: The Georgia Lowcountry, 1750-1820 in 2000. She has also co-authored many textbooks dealing with the subject of American slavery and gender.

Although Betty Wood has seemed to make the subject of slavery in colonial American her life's work, there is an alarming lack of primary sources in this book. There is a brief section at the end of the book including over twenty primary source documents; however, most of her citations in the bibliographic essay are secondhand. It is doubtful that Wood has slacked in research, it is a plausible conclusion therefore that Wood has skimmed her other books and research and pulled out only the basics of colonial slavery. She did state that this book was a beginner's look at American slavery. She may have simply just found the briefest and most frugal way to tell the bare essentials and give the reader an accurate picture of American colonial slavery without overburdening them with deciphers of primary sources.

While Wood makes a blatant statement that she believes race, not economy was the primary reason of choosing Africans for American slavery, many other historians would disagree. Robert William Fogel's Without Consent or Contract: The Rise and Fall of American Slavery, as well as his foregoing, notorious duet with Stanley L. Engerman, Time on the Cross, went into profound detail describing the economic benefits of slavery as an institution. While spending a very brief time on race, Without Consent or Contract demonstrates that racial problems evolved from African slavery, not that racial problems caused the enslavement of Africans. In this case, Betty Wood seems to be looking at the effect and trying to turn it into the cause. In a similarity, both Wood and Fogel agree that politics played a huge role in both the continuance and the demise of slavery. Wood spends a particular amount of time instilling in her reader that revolutionary politicians fought hard to keep slavery alive, whereas Fogel demonstrates that had in not be the veracious political fight against slavery, the institution would have continued to prosper.

With the retail price of $19.95, this book as a beginners guide seems to get the job done. One must be warned that Wood's emotional tongue could mislead people into romanticizing slavery, rather then portraying in as it truly was on the day to day level. There was a lack of depiction of slave life and an abundance of ideological theorization. However, through her work Wood is able to give a very basic description of slavery in colonial America as an institution and describe how it led up to and influence the American Revolution.

Eine Umfrage belegt zwar, dass 90 von 100 großen Unternehmen in Deutschland, Frankreich und Großbritannien neuen technischen Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten gegenüber aufgeschlossen sind und diese als nützlich erachten, jedoch verfügen nur 25% - 35% von ihnen über eine Technologie diese Kommunikationsvielfalt zu verwalten.
Oft ist nicht transparent über welchen Kommunikationskanal ein Mitarbeiter am besten zu erreichen ist. Die Kommunikation kommt so im schlechtesten Fall gar nicht zustande. Es entstehen Kommunikationsschwachstellen, wie Kommunikationsbarrieren und unnötige Wartezeiten, die zu höheren Kosten und Wettbewerbsnachteilen führen. Eine Studie hat gezeigt, dass Unternehmen mit durchschnittlich 100 Mitarbeitern durch diese Kommunikationsschwachstellen etwa 390.000 Euro jährlich einbüßen können.
Eine Reduzierung dieser Schwachstellen kann durch die Vereinheitlichung der verschiedenen Kommunikationskanäle erreicht werden. Diese vereinheitliche Kommunikation (engl. Unified Communications), im Folgenden UC genannt, gehört zu den aufstrebenden Lösungsbereichen in der Kommunikation von Unternehmen. Die Zielsetzung des Einsatzes von UC besteht darin, eine Erhöhung der Effizienz und Effektivität informationsverarbeitender Aktivitäten in kooperativen Arbeitsumgebungen zu ermöglichen. UC als Konzept von Prozessgestaltung und Technikeinsatz gibt das Versprechen ab, die Kommunikation reibungsloser, einfacher und kosteneffizienter zu gestalten.

About the Author
Kathy and Craig are dedicated to each other, and to hiking, in that order. Their second date was a 20-mi (32-km)dayhike in Arizona. Since then they haven't stopped for long.

They've trekked through much of the world's vertical topography, including the Nepalese Himalaya, Patagonian Andes, Spanish Pyrenees, Swiss Alps, Scottish Highlands, Italian Dolomites, and New Zealand Alps. In North America, they've explored the B.C. Coast, Selkirk and Purcell ranges, Montana's Beartooth Wilderness, Wyoming's Grand Tetons, the Colorado Rockies, and the California Sierra.

The Copelands are veteran guidebook writers who have an ardent fan base in their Don't Waste Your Time, Where Locals Hike, and Done in a Day series. This is the second title in their WOW series.

One of the Best Guides for Utah Hiking

This is a book that is written by people who have done all the hikes and know the trails. (Because the authors are obviously strong hikers you must use caution when accepting their ratings of the difficulty.)They describe in detail each of the hikes and have pictures that will interest the reader in deciding whether that is a hike for the scenery they'd like to see. They provide elevation changes and list elevations at the beginning and end of the hikes. This is a good feature in the event that a hike can be constructed to go in the opposite direction for a downhill hike as opposed to a strenuous uphill one. The maps provided are not for direct use in hiking as they are not a substitute for topographic maps which should be a must on every hikers "must carry" list. The book covers areas not covered by other books and does list some interesting Indian Rock Art locations and the hikes.

Hiking is a conversation with the earth

Occasionally we receive a note from someone who's purchased one of our hiking guidebooks and is disappointed to find it does not include GPS data. Each of these notes is, in substance, identical to the book review Michael Boyd posted in this forum. None of these readers has ever stated a specific destination or site that our book describes and that he or she failed to reach. So they're not actually finding fault with our book. They're instead expressing their belief that a GPS unit is required hiking equipment in all circumstances, therefore all contemporary hiking guidebooks should contain GPS data. We write opinionated guidebooks, so we of course welcome readers' commentary. But we vehemently disagree with this particular point of view.

GPS is utterly unnecessary if you have a complete, precisely-written description of the established route, which is what we provide for each trip in every book we write. Actually, GPS is worse than unnecessary. It's a distraction--a vestige of the office cubicle, which is what most of us seek to escape when we go hiking. You're trekking long distance, off trail, cross-country? By all means, carry a GPS unit; your survival might depend on it. You're using our guidebook? Bring your compass, but leave your GPS unit at home; you won't need it. Excluding GPS data from our guidebooks was a conscious decision. We did not want to suggest hikers must purchase, carry and use a GPS unit. We opted instead to carefully craft our books, liberating hikers from the "GPS is necessary" myth.

Compared to a compass, a GPS unit is heavier, bulkier, more fragile, more complex, more time consuming, occasionally foiled by topography (particularly canyons), dependent on batteries, and way more expensive. Including GPS data in our books would not serve the vast majority of hikers. It would deprive them of a joyful sense of discovery. Moreover, it would deter them from developing the rewarding, potentially lifesaving skill of learning to read the land. Hiking, after all, is a conversation with the earth. Constantly fiddling with and peering at a GPS unit interrupts that conversation.

Mr. Boyd, in his review of our WOW Utah book, also says he prefers the maps in Michael Kelsey's books. That's odd, given Mr. Boyd's allegiance to technology. Kelsey's maps were hand sketched. They suggest rock-art and ruin locations but do not pinpoint them. The maps in our book were painstakingly designed and are illuminated by our detailed, highly-visual descriptions of where en route hikers should look for archaeological treasures. We're confident hikers will find our WOW Utah book a unique resource: not only an efficient, accurate guide, but also a source of inspiration.

Superb book for fit hikers

I just wanted to say what a fantastic book the WOW utah guide is!

Myself and my girlfriend just got back from spending 3 weeks this may in canyon country, and used this book extensively throughout - in particular, we hiked the arches' devils garden & delicate arch, dead horse point, canyonlands peekaboo and chesler park/joint trail, mule canyon, natural bridges, calf creek, hole-in-rock canyons peekaboo, spooky & brimstone (also explored egypt-3 off egypt bench, outside of the scope of the book) and willow & fortymile gulches, bryce canyon & zions angels landing.

Outstanding memories came especially from the canyonlands and escalante hikes. Fortymile gulch was *so* much fun, deeper water than expected, and peekaboo slot was just incredibly beautiful - also we met a rattlesnake here, under a rock, and had to chimney up the walls to pass over it! Peekaboo and the joint are both just classic hikes in a crazy landscape- unforgettable.

I dont normally write book reviews, but I felt this book gave such great advice in an outspoken style of writing that certainly paralleled my feelings towards the great outdoors - we quickly learnt to trust the book, full of little details that made things better, esp. with regard to avoiding the tourist hordes and finding camping.

The only thing we found was that the approach to brimstone slot was more strenuous than expected, and described in the book - we hiked it at the hottest part of the day, and found it to be pretty brutal as the canyon floor is very sandy, and there was zero shade the whole way. The return was considerably easier, once it had cooled off. I suppose you could say that about a lot of the hikes in utah, but this particular stretch did seem particularly menacing, and reminded us how nasty it could be to be out there without enough water.

Another thing that could be mentioned in passing - is the devils garden off hole in rock rd - its a pretty neat distraction! and fun to be somewhere like that without the aforementioned hordes.

Anyway I cant wait to go back again.
